sounds like the guy singing is imitating Black music and Black people .From the voice to even the instrumental part(sounds like a trumpet playing toward the end). That's all entirely Black sound.
Hopefully black folks are getting some kind of royalties and recognition. Black people are always having their music ripped off by whites.
@told85 That's almost as ignorant as saying they owe white people money for inventing and engineering modern instruments black artists use to make awesome music. Sound is sound, you are referring to style and if this really bothers you than just remember that imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
@egouveia24 Wrong. Europeans did not "engineer or create" musical instruments. Musical instruments were invented and created thousands upon thousands of years before the first white mutant was even born.
@takesun2 No they didn't but the modern method of music distribuition and method of recording and creating modern music can be accredited to them. Case in point being the modern transistor, and the semiconductor found in many modern musical instruments.
Regardless, the point was to not embrace negative attitudes about race but apparently that didn't happen.
@takesun2 This is correct, this is why i was trying to emphasize the "MODERN" influence (past 150 years) on modern musical instrumentation. The Americans and the Europeans have contributed significantly to modern music and recording. Amazing stuff is coming out of asia now as well. For all we know the missing link could have created the first instruments.
Also, there is a good chance all people are alive due to mutations and we evolved accordingly, its possible that we are all mutants.
@egouveia24 White people need to quit lying to themselves. Putting your name on other peoples work, instruments and other inventions and then shutting them out isn't inventing anything. That's called stealing. Just like rock music. Blacks invented that but now hardly any Black people are shown to be in that genre. But let me guess to make yourself feel important, you want to say whites invented that too? No, you stole and shut them out. Stop claiming and exploiting other culture's things.
@purplefashion03 damn!!! that wasn't the point..... the point was that it's music and its meant to be enjoyed by all people regardless of race. All people are people, race is just a physical characteristic, we all have the same number of chromosomes at the end of the day...
I wasn't trying to make a point of who stole what but rather at the end of the day that it really shouldn't matter, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.
@egouveia24 No, I'm tired of White people acting as if they are "giving" me something that was already mine. An instrument is a instrument. Whites will steal, shut Blacks out, put a different coat of paint on it, "repackage" it and act and if they invented and "modernized" it. You didn't. An instrument is an instrument.
@purplefashion03 hey man... you sound like you have deep personal opinions on this, and i don't know you so i'll assume they may have some personal merit to you. Like i said before, i still think music is music and i think you are just really pissed off at things you probably don't have control of. Life is short man, enjoy it!!

@EXGANGBANGER116 So wonderful and really music, not the fs what't today going on... best example David Guetta or whatever his name is... Everyone today search for another one to make a song, this what that, he with her etc. Soooooooooooooooooooo booooooooorrinnng...

The best course of action is to cease to acknowledge his existence and remember that all he has and will ever have is words, nothing more.
@CrusaderAed yeah youre right i should have thought about it & should've left his a@@ alone dude should go and troll somewhere else but your right i'll think about it again thanks.....
Man i'm 33 yrs old the first time i remember hearing this song even though if came out in 85' was 1987 that was the first time i heard this & during that time i was in 4th grade i had a crush on a girl back then who was in 2nd or 3rd grade at that time i think she knew or she didn't know that i had a big crush on her & this exact song made me think about her even though i was raised in the hip hop/rap &R&B culture but i still got love for this song.........
How can anyone hate this song? Mick Hucknall is such a great vocalist and this arguably Simply Red's most famous song - this video complements it well. Everyone's certainly entitled to their opinions; it's just sad to see that people dislike this.
I'm 20, and i have my mum and dad to thank for bringing me up to music like this, especially this, just wish in a way i was older to have seen it all at the times it all came out. Today's music has dried out and way too machined. Makes me feel ashamed as most of my generation produce that crap, but you do get now and then the decent ones.
I thought that i was old when i first heard this song in 85 - listening to it now makes me realize that i was very young. I remember exactly where i was - and England was such a better place - the world was.
Thanks Mic, you played a big part in many people perception of a better world :)
On the one hand Holding Back The Years has a wonderful sense of 80s sophistication, on the other hallmarks of a 1960s classic. Mick Hucknall's soulful voice combined with that easy going beat is so true. The video is perfect, of childhood longing. The song's inclusion in Only Fools and Horses, with expressions from David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst that told a thousand words, was television at its most poignant. It stands up with any classic soul song you can name. That’s all I have to say!
Simply Red. if I had to chose an artist to listen to all day it would be Simply Red. I never tire of his voice. Other singers I tire of quickly, Simply Red is in a special place in my listening library of beautiful music.
I have to say the 80's was the worst period in the history of pop music, But this band was a standout and this song just went into classic status from its first airplay. The voice, the progression, the words. This is music, pure and simple. Love, love, love.
I hear this on the radio almost everyday on this station name 94.7 the wave at my school. I literally know the first verse by heart just by listening to it on the radio. Anyways I love this song and listen to it almost everyday at home. I miss music, amazing mainstream music to be exact.
la più bella e struggente ballata blue-eyed soul ke sia mai stata scritta! meravigliosa... un capolavoro musicale senza tempo!!! ke talento Mick Hucknall !!!!!
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
I was walking down the street in a major western European city some years ago. I rounded a corner and was nearly knocked over by a man rounding the corner in the opposite direction. Imagine my surprise to grok that it was none other than Mr. Simply Red, He Who Holds Back Years. He politely said "excuse me" and kept on walking. I later noticed that Simply Red was in town playing a gig. I also saw Glenn Danzig walking down the street in the same city. He had on a Danzig shirt. Really.
Excellent track. Whimsical, serene and narrative. I didn't know that they had made the video in Whitby. It's a lovely old fishing port, and when you visit there, the sense of history and memory fits aptly with the song.
How are we having a racial argument right now...GEEZ!!

I hear this on the radio almost everyday on this station name 94.7 the wave at my school. I literally know the first verse by heart just by listening to it on the radio. Anyways I love this song and listen to it almost everyday at home. I miss music, amazing mainstream music to be exact.

Wondering why does the music industry want to keep good music from the public, and brain wash our youth with music of today.
