I assume you're using ZDoom. I'm using Risen3D but I edit in default format. Is it possible to create a PWAD file using the monsters and such that just replaces the default lumps when used? Like a common mod?
@Gibbagobba In order to actually MAKE custom monsters, you need to make a sprite for every frame of animation in 8 directions (up left, up, up right, right, right down, down, down left, and left), so you figure the idle animation is 3 frames long, 8 directions * 3 frames of idle animation, thats 24 sprites just for idling, then probably 3-5 frames of animation for attacking in 8 directions, so at least 24 more sprites, the death animation, and any projectiles they use, then script the monster.
Never edit the IWAD, ever. It's bad practice. All you needed to do was use a regular unmodified Doom 2 IWAD, load the monster wad as a PWAD, and that's it. It's quite senseless to merge it.
@Sodaholic6502 Very true - I was pretty much just working with the barebones here (I have loads of IWAD backups anyway haha) but yes, you can most certainly use the same practice above with a PWAD and load the PWAD at game start to get the custom monster in there.

put a thing down in doombuilder 2, doesnt make a difference what thing you put down, then simply click on the thing id in the box at the bottom left and input the new monsters id.

Ok... I found the problem... it's probably the Doom Builder... I've try with the afrit in Doom builder 2...Nothing happened... I downloaded Doom builder 1 and i downloaded another monster called Dune Warrior...and...it happened...i'll check if the Dune Warrior works in Doom Builder 2... If it works, that means, Afrit has a problem... If it doesn't works... that means, we must use doom builder 1 to add custom monsters...
whenever i go to open XWE, it says DOOM.wadfile\shell\EditXWE. . Then it opens normally and when i try to open doom2.wad it says: List index out of bounds (3) what's going on?
This works perfect for Doom Builder 1. But its not 64-Bit compatible so I use Doom Builder 2. When I merge the monsters into my main wad file, there is no health catagory listed in the things menu. Is there another way to retrieve the new monsters in Doom Builder 2?

"Merge" on the file menu is greyed out so I can't select it. I think this is because my DOOM2 wad is "read-only" but I read that XWE should have no problem with read-only wads. How do I fix this?
@spacelion88 Right click on the Wad, go to properties, then check to see if its read-only. If it isn't, go to properties/security/advanced/edit. Select your account name, then change it to "Full Contol". This worked for me, hope it works for you.
Jaundice please help me! i did exactly like you did. I wanted to add a cyber annihilator (the cyberdemon with two bazookas) but when in open doom builder in the things mode, there isn't that black thing that you used to add in the map the afrit. How can i solve this problem?

I'm using Doom Builder 2. I am able to merge the monster in XWE but when I place the monster on my map, it says"Unable to spawn type 31118, or what ever number the monster has. Is this because Doom Builder 2 has a different method of importing new monsters? I can't find any detailed videos like this one talking about Doom Builder 2. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with 2.0 because 1.0 isn't 64-Bit compatible.
I added weapons to my map in the same way and i get them working fine, but how can i place them on my map so i can pick them up, because, if i just add them like monsters i can only use them with a cheat... Also, if i look at the decorate file of merged weapon wad in XWE, i won't see the number like with adding the monster.
I have followed your tutorial exactly, and while I am able to get this working, there is a problem. Once I get to the step in Doom Builder to place the monster, there is no "Health" option. So I'm unable to find the monster's TID. The only reason I got this to work is because I used 3120, the number you've listed in this video. Any idea why it won't list the "Health" option for me? It's in Doom2 mode. I'm using Doom Builder 2, so maybe that's why? Seems like it should work in DB1 and 2 tho.

I just fixed the error problem by right clicking on the xwe file, went to properties/compatibility and checked Run this program as administrator. Thanks for trying to help anyway.
when I open XWE I get an error meassage that reads 'Failed to create key .WAD.' yhen if I click ok on the error message XWE opens but I get other error messages when I try to open test.WAD and merge the mcustom monster.

From what i've heard you can fix this problem by opening the XWE.ini file and under the Options menu (assuming your OS is Vista or Win 7) change the NOREGISTRY=0 to NOREGISTRY=1

Hi I have my Really Old Doom95 and when I add these sprites it they do pop up (sprites and all) however when I go into Doom Builder 2 to find them theres no Health section, it just ends at Decoration as usual. What am I doing wrong? have I got a too old version? or maybe something else? I used a pinky/ Demon monster for the sprite so I know that should of worked. mhm... I used XWE and added the Afrit as shown in the video. And it worked. The problem is that the method worked only for the first monster wad. What I mean is that when I add more monsters the same way shown above, they don't appear in Doom Builder under Health or anywhere else. They are added to the main Wad but cannot be found by DB. I played around with XWE but I can't find where I'm doing wrong. Suggestions...?
What you have to do in that case is look up the monsters thing id in XWE, then manually type in the thing id for that monster when you place an object in DB. It's good to keep a text file with the monsters name and thing id, especially if you're adding numerous monsters.

Try reinstalling XWE, and in the config, make sure you locate your ORIGINAL DOOM2.WAD, because you always need to copy and paste your original Doom2.wad before you edit anything to make sure you don't fuck it up - I've done it and it sucks.

It's because you're using the Doomsday engine lol, I use Zdoom, hence Zdoom (Doom in Hexen format) for the maps. There are some differences in how to do things for doomsday maps, but I don't like Doomsday :X so I don't make maps for it.
doomsday has worked great for me for a long time.

I understand that - but I don't know the ins and outs of the Doomsday Engine, or it's limitations, therefore I can't really help you out. And I wouldn't use Skulltag purely because I kinda lost some respect for them because a few years ago they put malicious code into one of their updates to corrupt Zdaemon :O But I guess it's personal preference. I suggest trying this out with Zdoom engine and using Doom in Hexen format step by step and see if you can get it working that way.
in your vid when you make your new map you use hexen format.. how does that work?

Keyword there is Doom Builder 2. I don't suggest using DB2, a lot of things are done differently, and also more difficult. DB1, despite the fact that is doesn't have some of the graphic upgrades that 2 has, is way more functional than DB2 and a lot easier to use.

Use Zdoom (Doom in Hexen Format). Even if you aren't using slopes and stuff, like if you're trying to make a Classic style wad, I STILL recommend that format because its easier to use and more powerful.

Well, you need to make 8 directions of the enemy, so since you're an artist, you'd have to draw each frame of animation in each direction, then scan the picture and import it into photoshop, clean it up, border it, and pixel in the rest of the color, then do this over and over for each frame and direction of animation - tedious process, but fairly rewarding in the end I'd say.
Hey man, I have 2 huge files with a ton of monsters in both, am I likely to run into any issues merging two big files? Also, am I meant to merge it with my Doom2 Iwad (which I then put in Zdoom format in Doombuilder) or do I merge them with Zdoom? Also, once I save the map or exit Doombuilder, will that undo my merging?
Sorry for the questions, I'm just a little stumped...
I believe it should - I haven't really toyed around with the other sourceports, mainly because the 3d models in the ports that support them don't look very good. The hi-res textures and lighting effects are pretty cool, but not enough to make me switch from ZDoom. You might have to do a little research and see if standard WAD editing practice would work in Risen.
I think it has to do with XWE, I run vista. Every time I run it it says error 32. Then when I try to merge the wad, it says missing file DeuSF.exe. What do I do???
No but it is for this one and every other program - since 90% of programs I tried to use when I had Vista didn't work. It's just not a good OS. XP uses your resources better, and you'll be more compatible with everything. And Vista only games? There are 100% working XP cracks for them - so I highly suggest it.
Maybe so, but the only doom related programs I use are gzDoom, Doom Builder, and xwe. I can get all of those to work, except for xwe. My other PC runs on XP. What if I use that PC for xwe and then transfer it to my vista pc for more detailed mapping - Like I would use my faster vista PC for making the map, and then replace the music, monsters, textures etc. on my slower Xp pc.
How true :P But Vista doesn't need 4GB, my PC has 3GB and it runs super quickly. It takes me like 2 seconds to open up Adobe After Effects. Anyways, I think I figured out this xwe thing. And also, DoomedArchvileDemon said that custom monsters don't work on Doom Builder 2, if you have it, can you confirm this? I like DB1 more, but I use DB2 for my tutorials.
I don't like Doom Builder 2 at all, unless maybe I can configure the control to be identical to DB1. But like I said - I'd like to use DB2 and get used to it because I'm going to use it for my DB tutorials.

Building monsters? You mean like from scratch, making your own sprites, scripting, animating, and all of that building? Or taking a monster from the game and editing it so it will be faster, stronger, or do something different?

Help me.....Tell me if i get anything wrong.
1.i copy my original Doom2 wad file.
2..i open up XWE. (NOTE: when you opened it, it just automaticly opened test. When i open it it doesent.)
3. i load my test, Merge it with the afrit. close it.
4. open up Doom builder. click open. i open test. (When you opened it, it had things automaticly set. for me, it doesent.
5. I Click OK (Error: Please load an IWAD!) i pick doom2.
6. I Right click, add thing, HEALTH ISINT THERE...

I'm using Doom Builder 2. I am able to merge the monster in XWE but when I place the monster on my map, it says"Unable to spawn type 31118, or what ever number the monster has. Is this because Doom Builder 2 has a different method of importing new monsters? I can't find any detailed videos like this one talking about Doom Builder 2. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with 2.0 because 1.0 isn't 64-Bit compatible.

I added weapons to my map in the same way and i get them working fine, but how can i place them on my map so i can pick them up, because, if i just add them like monsters i can only use them with a cheat... Also, if i look at the decorate file of merged weapon wad in XWE, i won't see the number like with adding the monster.

I have followed your tutorial exactly, and while I am able to get this working, there is a problem. Once I get to the step in Doom Builder to place the monster, there is no "Health" option. So I'm unable to find the monster's TID. The only reason I got this to work is because I used 3120, the number you've listed in this video. Any idea why it won't list the "Health" option for me? It's in Doom2 mode. I'm using Doom Builder 2, so maybe that's why? Seems like it should work in DB1 and 2 tho.

I just fixed the error problem by right clicking on the xwe file, went to properties/compatibility and checked Run this program as administrator. Thanks for trying to help anyway.

when I open XWE I get an error meassage that reads 'Failed to create key .WAD.' yhen if I click ok on the error message XWE opens but I get other error messages when I try to open test.WAD and merge the mcustom monster.

From what i've heard you can fix this problem by opening the XWE.ini file and under the Options menu (assuming your OS is Vista or Win 7) change the NOREGISTRY=0 to NOREGISTRY=1

Hi I have my Really Old Doom95 and when I add these sprites it they do pop up (sprites and all) however when I go into Doom Builder 2 to find them theres no Health section, it just ends at Decoration as usual. What am I doing wrong? have I got a too old version? or maybe something else? I used a pinky/ Demon monster for the sprite so I know that should of worked. mhm... I used XWE and added the Afrit as shown in the video. And it worked. The problem is that the method worked only for the first monster wad. What I mean is that when I add more monsters the same way shown above, they don't appear in Doom Builder under Health or anywhere else. They are added to the main Wad but cannot be found by DB. I played around with XWE but I can't find where I'm doing wrong. Suggestions...?

What you have to do in that case is look up the monsters thing id in XWE, then manually type in the thing id for that monster when you place an object in DB. It's good to keep a text file with the monsters name and thing id, especially if you're adding numerous monsters.

do you know why when itry to open doom2.wad(in xwe) or any file these stupid little pop things appear & it just dosnt work the whole thing just stays blank. and (before ihad any idea on how to actually put custom monsters on maps) i copy and pasted 1 of the wad files for a custom imp into my doombuilder 2 folder and it worked fine it was in my monsters catagory and the imp works fine and all that stuff, but i tryed to put a couple more wads and it wont work. why does only1 work and 2or more?

Try reinstalling XWE, and in the config, make sure you locate your ORIGINAL DOOM2.WAD, because you always need to copy and paste your original Doom2.wad before you edit anything to make sure you don't fuck it up - I've done it and it sucks.

ok no when in hexen format under monsters thats affrit.. didnt know thats what thats monsters name is in hexen...
So i got the damn aFrit to play with Zdoom like you said. Now i want to know why i cant get it to show up when i play the same map in the Doomsday engine.

It's because you're using the Doomsday engine lol, I use Zdoom, hence Zdoom (Doom in Hexen format) for the maps. There are some differences in how to do things for doomsday maps, but I don't like Doomsday :X so I don't make maps for it.

doomsday has worked great for me for a long time.
i am wanting to create my own sprites\monsters for doom2 but i was so mad cause i couldnt get the monster to show up in game.. and if i cant get that to work cause of XWE then i figured there was no way for me to get my own custom monster in there.
ive made many maps useing DB2 and they all work great with DE accept the custum monsters..
so there is no way to get them to work in there?

I understand that - but I don't know the ins and outs of the Doomsday Engine, or it's limitations, therefore I can't really help you out. And I wouldn't use Skulltag purely because I kinda lost some respect for them because a few years ago they put malicious code into one of their updates to corrupt Zdaemon :O But I guess it's personal preference. I suggest trying this out with Zdoom engine and using Doom in Hexen format step by step and see if you can get it working that way.

Your Iwad config is wrong. Go to your IWADs and set your DOOM2.wad to the wad used for Doom in Hexen format.

Keyword there is Doom Builder 2. I don't suggest using DB2, a lot of things are done differently, and also more difficult. DB1, despite the fact that is doesn't have some of the graphic upgrades that 2 has, is way more functional than DB2 and a lot easier to use.

Use Zdoom (Doom in Hexen Format). Even if you aren't using slopes and stuff, like if you're trying to make a Classic style wad, I STILL recommend that format because its easier to use and more powerful.

hey man i got doom builder 2, this is all. i have photoshop 4 and want to make custom sprites.. i am just lost in all the info out there.. there is a wall, a mental block i cant get beyond. i only want custom enemies for now! what programs do i need? where do i get these? i am amateur artist, this is important to me for experiment! any help massively appreciated.. maybe we could even combine.. i have wrote a story and also many characters drawn.. Well, you need to make 8 directions of the enemy, so since you're an artist, you'd have to draw each frame of animation in each direction, then scan the picture and import it into photoshop, clean it up, border it, and pixel in the rest of the color, then do this over and over for each frame and direction of animation - tedious process, but fairly rewarding in the end I'd say.

Hey man, I have 2 huge files with a ton of monsters in both, am I likely to run into any issues merging two big files? Also, am I meant to merge it with my Doom2 Iwad (which I then put in Zdoom format in Doombuilder) or do I merge them with Zdoom? Also, once I save the map or exit Doombuilder, will that undo my merging?

I believe it should - I haven't really toyed around with the other sourceports, mainly because the 3d models in the ports that support them don't look very good. The hi-res textures and lighting effects are pretty cool, but not enough to make me switch from ZDoom. You might have to do a little research and see if standard WAD editing practice would work in Risen.

No but it is for this one and every other program - since 90% of programs I tried to use when I had Vista didn't work. It's just not a good OS. XP uses your resources better, and you'll be more compatible with everything. And Vista only games? There are 100% working XP cracks for them - so I highly suggest it.

Maybe so, but the only doom related programs I use are gzDoom, Doom Builder, and xwe. I can get all of those to work, except for xwe. My other PC runs on XP. What if I use that PC for xwe and then transfer it to my vista pc for more detailed mapping - Like I would use my faster vista PC for making the map, and then replace the music, monsters, textures etc. on my slower Xp pc.

How true :P But Vista doesn't need 4GB, my PC has 3GB and it runs super quickly. It takes me like 2 seconds to open up Adobe After Effects. Anyways, I think I figured out this xwe thing. And also, DoomedArchvileDemon said that custom monsters don't work on Doom Builder 2, if you have it, can you confirm this? I like DB1 more, but I use DB2 for my tutorials.

It is quite possible that DB2 straight doesn't work for a lot of things, it's new and not-very-improved. I'd advise just sticking to DB1.

I don't know how to add new textures to my map... Neither weapons...
When i add textures to my map using doom builder, they don't appear, they look like little white and green squeares. (Missing Texture). I tried to Merge my Doom 2 Wad (Which is the Iwad im using) with the Texture Wad i got... But now it doesn't even open xD.
What can i do?
