Viper lost because of the high wind resistance which is very significant on those speeds. It had no top and the widest tires. The European Viper had different exhaust to the ones sold in U.S. so it didn't have all the power. It's very easy and cheap to get a lot more hp out of the Viper engine.

Try to tune Esprit and the transmission will blow up.

True about that being an older Viper. Originally, the Viper was a low end, torque monster with high (numerically low) gearing that would lose a majority of its useable power by 5000 RPM. Today it's a different machine. As for power-to-speed...it becomes and exponential function after awhile. The Bugatti only needs about 280HP to hit 155MPH, but all the rest to push mother nature aside.

- There are many cars on sale with better performance than a Z06 for less than half the price. Corvettes are like expensive American TVRs really.

- In Europe many of our estate cars can nearly crack 200mph and do 0-60 in 4secs. BMWS, Mercs, Audis etc

I agree, Nurburgring is the place to compare lap times. The Z06s time could be FAR better if it used the same tires as the 911 Turbo (not to mention NUMEROUS attempts by pro drivers). After all, thats the Porsches home territory. The Z06 made that run after 3 passes with Goodyear runflats.

VIR has every element you can ask for in a track, slow turns, elevation changes, everything. Same day, same driver, the Z06 was 7 secs faster than the Turbo, even with POS runflats. That says something

Hey Im not saying the Z06 is shit. Its mighty impressive. But lap times for different tracks and cars will vary.

Z06s are so expensive here because of the import duty, but the EUs mark up is nothing compared to what the US government adds on imports. This ensures American cars always sell well on home territory.

So in Europe the choice is not so straight forward. A Porsche is much nicer than a Corvette to sit in, maybe thats why Ive never actually seen a Z06 on the road.

10 years ago the TVR was roughly the same price as a Viper, if not cheaper. This video shows that the TVR philosophy of a lightweight car with a powerful engine (though 20hp less the the Viper's) and aerodynamic body completely trounce the equivalent American sports car. That's not being bitchy, that's just the way it is. If American sports car makers applied the same approach as TVR then they'd get much better results.
