As far as the 'dear reader' dislike...yeah I get that.  Maybe you feel like it's breaking the fourth wall. I know want to be transported by a book, not reminded that I'm reading a book. I do. You may want to be immersed the story and that's hard to do when the author is reminding you that 'its only a book'.
