  • I'm totally baked, fly helicopter in Battlefield 3 and listen to this.....wow

  • Obwohl Wagner Antisemit war ist seine Musik trotzdem geil. :D

  • playing bad company 2 Vietnam while listening...GET TO THE CHOPPA!

  • dadadadadadadadadaaadadadadadadadadadadaadaaaaaaaaaaadadadadadadadadaadadadadadaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • I'm revising while listening to this. It's intense

  • Truly an excellent version.

  • wagner kickass !

  • @raticida123456 fuck u

  • @01010100101110001010 wagner is ONE OF THE GREATEST GENIUS!

  • GOOD GOD LADY SHUT UP. *runs out the door screaming*

  • dapdadad dapda

  • fucking retard. only cause hitler liked wagners work u automatically think this is nationalsocialist???

  • Sometimes I wonder how such a prejudice c*^t can write such wonderful music. But again mahler was jewish (at least for a time) and he loved wagner's music, so I suppose that I can get over it.

  • Wow I didn't know good ol' wagner wrote this! What a great song!

  • とにかく感動した。

  • very moving. i can imagine dozens of scenes to match this with. so cool!

  • its my favorite song ever

  • while you guys aimlessly debate the merit of comparing Wagner and Hitler, let's not forget this recording is really quite good. The string scales and tremolos, brass melodies, and powerful singers do this dramatic scene justice!

  • No offense at all taken towards anyone of course. And while I would conservatively describe my knowledge of aviation to be above average, at no point did any type of helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft come to mind during my listening experience, in spite of the movie. LOL. Also, very well stated with regards to the straw man fallacies of Hitler, and the correlation rather than causation of Wagner and Hitler's views.

  • What a wonderfully powerful, relentless, and magnificent piece. Undoubtedly humbling to any potential challenger. Makes me feel as if I can take on a violent storm while out on turbulent waters. Perhaps I can even imagine this taking place at a familiar lake, which is sometimes said to unpredictably take on personalities of it's own. The music lashes me with the might of hundreds of pounding waves. Thank you for providing the opportunity for such an experience.

  • I'm just glad that you don't think about helicopters and choppers when you listen to this. :)

  • Let me preface this paragraph by stating that I am currently drunk (do not worry, for I did not drive), thereby absolving myself from any forthcoming, objectionable, and/or stupid sentiments.

subsonic20hz is my second cousin and close friend in real life, Mingyu, and he just told me an inside joke, in spite of him stating some, what I believe to be, honest and sincere remarks, as he is an actual fan of classical music (Bach fugues are his favorites), and he respects its great composers, like Wagner.

  • If it offended you, I did not mean that way. Sorry for any offence. Anyway... you know how people always think about the scene from Apocalypse Now, where they feature this music? Its such a great scene paired with great music that so many people think about that scene, forgetting the true meaning. Thank god there are some who still remember it.

  • You did not offend me AT ALL, man! I was only trying to let you in on a little, quirky joke of ours. This dorky guy next door made us laugh when he mentioned the personality of our lake for some reason. :)

I have watched that scene and deemed it a little cliché myself, seeing as the Third Reich supposedly revered this piece, and Coppola then implemented it into a USA war scenario, but I think that both Wagner and Coppola were masters of their callings. I am happy that I uploaded the version with voices!

  • You know how always Hitler loved Wagner? And how people say that Wagner was basically a Nazi because of that? I think its cowcrap. I always thought just because he was evil does not make the music he loved evil. Thats basically saying that...the movies the bully of a school watch are evil.

  • People often stupidly confuse causation with correlation, and some should take more responsibility for their actions because everyone CHOOSES, to some extent, what they want to hear. If there is a problem, then perhaps it lies inside of their own brains, not inside of a score, a libretto, or whatever else? Besides, some works are meant to be provocative in order to facilitate discussion an/or challenge traditional points of view.

  • Music has no morals, no conscience, and claims no value judgments, though the composer may be prejudice, like Wagner evidently was, that does not necessarily mean that the artwork is reprehensible.

  • But sometimes, they delibaretly do that. For example, Shostakovich. His 5th, 7th, 10th symphonies were especially for that purpose; a form of escaping Stalin's shadow.

  • I'm not too familiar with Shostakovich's work YET. Though, like I said, my friend, it doesn't NECESSARILY mean that the works are despicable, or, in other words, sometimes they might be and other times they might not be. One must also keep in mind that, in the case of Wagner, the Nazis aimed to omit ANYTHING they did not want the public to know and disseminate ANYTHING that would prove to be useful towards meeting their wants. Propoganda is full of white lies, rationalizations, and distortions.

  • Exactly. But have you heard about the Wagner/Barenboim controversy? When Barenboim performed Tristan in Israel and sparked controversy? That is probably the ridiculously terrible effects of Hitler and his propaganda. Now the white lies become the terrible truth.

Anyway, on Shostakovich: maybe you should listen to Haitnik's Shostakovich 5, last movement. Its one of the terrifying pieces ever written.

  • Wagner was obviously anti-semitic and repudiated "Jewishness in music," to be sure, but Hitler committed many straw man fallacies with respect to Wagner's positions, most likely intentionally since he was manipulative and highly intelligent.

  • I do not blame those Jews for their outcries in Israel because it must be hard for them to separate Wagner from Nazi beliefs, but I hope that one day everyone can just look past him as a self-centered, racist, arrogant man who used people endlessly and just focus on the wonderful notes he wrote. For some, these two seem inextricably linked, but I admittedly cannot comprehend the conundrum fully, or understand the pain totally, since I am not in fact Jewish.

I shall check out that Shostakovich.

subsonic20hz and I often visit a specific lake together during warm, tranquil summer days, which seem so salubrious and rejuvenating to us after harsh Indiana winters and unsatisfactory springs, and a neighbor of ours from that very lake once said that the lake itself possessed a personality that incessantly changed. I love you, my cousin, our neighbor at that lake, and that lake in and of itself.

Summer cannot come soon enough, and god damn it, I love the flute trills in this piece! I grow a foot in height after listening to this work and infinitely grander in spirit!

  • I have seen the clip from Apocalypse Now. I tend not to associate classical music with its modern "popular culture" contexts. In reviewing the clip, I must assert that my original imagery was much more pleasing to me. Yes, I was being honest in the disclosure of my personal thoughts up until my reference to a lake having a personality. I am, above all a rationalist, and was simply making reference to an inside joke about a person who once tried to characterize our lake.
