  • Bass ringing is the bane of my existence...

  • Wow! Thanks for all the awesome info!

  • I noticed you dont use those home theater style seats with the high back head rests. Is there a reason for not going that route? Does that kind of seat block the the direct radiating sound from the surrounds? What's up? Im about to buy either a sofa or a set of home theater style seats ( row of 3) with the high back. What do you recommend?

  • @bujoun76 Yes, high back seats are not recommended. Not only because they block sound from the rear, they also create strong reflections. Go to the RealTraps web site, then find the link to the Articles page on the home page. Then see the RFZ article.

  • @EthanWiner Mr. Winer YOU ARE THE MAN! I will buy a more "typical" sofa instead and I will taka a look at your companys' base traps. Im in need and I make an effort to buy from you. Thanks!

  • Gr8 job..

  • Well done. Thank you.

  • Is there a simple method for testing a room for good acostics, if you're performing live and intend on recording a video for Youtube?

  • @huliniswhoiam Yes, go to the RealTraps web site, find the link on the home page to the articles, then look for the Room Measuring article.

  • 240p should be illegal!

    Great info though...

  • @bujoun76 LOL, that video is 5 years old. There's a version on our web site at higher res, but the info is still the same. :-)

  • Thanks Ethan! You are THE room treatment Guru.

  • won't you take me to...

  • Love your speaker stands LOL. (not being a smart a--, that is something I would do too.

  • Thanks heaps for your valuable info. Your a champ !!!!

Hope your cool black cat is well.

  • Ethan Winer rocks! Thanks again for the info Winer!

  • Great video, thanks for sharing!

  • your last name should have a second n, because you're a winner! :)

  • I'd love to watch a movie at your house!

  • @imtormentor Any time. The room is even better now than shown in this video. I've since added a projector and 159-inch screen, plus even more bass trapping.

  • You the man!!!!!

  • Wow it looks amazing, I bet the sound is even more amazing!

  • This was awesome. Best and mosyt informative video on the topic I've seen so far, thank you! (daniel, aspiring audio engineer)

  • cool vid

  • Thanks Ethan, your videos are extremely helpful in learning about acoustics and treating rooms!

  • Fantastic video. Learnt alot. But i am little confused as to why your center channel speaker in your home theater is the same as the left and right ones. I thought center channel speakers are suppose to be wider with 2 woofers and a tweeter.

  • @Prabhu2086 Ideally all five speakers will be indentical, or at least use identical driver components. So there's no reason the center channel speaker should be different than the others.

  • @EthanWiner Hmm.....Identical speaker makes sense. I went to a hifi store today selling hometheater speakers. The seller told me that the center channel should have 2 woofers and a tweeter to make dialogue much better and most of the stores i went to did not use identical speakers for the center. They all had a center channel with 2 woofers and a tweeter. I wonder if you have come across such setups and what is your view on this.

  • @Prabhu2086 The logic behind identical speakers is called "timbre matching," so sounds that are panned to come from more than one front (or rear) speaker at a time emit from the speakers sounding the same. It's an important concept. Most store clerks know very little.

  • This helps alot for my home theater set-up. I can see me building bass traps in my near future..

  • excellent video!

  • Thanks Ethan.

  • @ Eathan Winer. Thanks Heaps for the vid. What are the bass traps made of.

  • @Jimbo2Step They're made with rigid fiberglass and plastic membranes. Find my video "Made in Connecticut" which shows a tour of our vendors and the RealTraps factory.

  • Very nice video with tons of information. I'm dealing with a room that is close to being square (10' x 12' x 8' ) so I've got a 60Hz peak but its not so bad where I sit but I do have a big dip at around 125Hz. I'm sure I've got other frequency response issues but those are the ones I notice most. Anyway the video has inspired me to get off my butt and do some more research :)

  • thacks a lot real knollege from a master like you sire ,i want kontact you please...gabriel from Luxembourrg

  • we have the same interface, thats sweet, your site and vids helped me alot, i never knew the importance of treating the wall behind me and the ceiling, im gonna get some bass traps for the corners. and the rear wall behind my monitors is also gonna be treated asap.

  • Thumps up Ethan!!

  • Cool well explained video.

  • Hi, I have a room that is 11.5 x 11.5 feet and 8.2 high. If I treat it acoustically, with absorbent or diffuser, what would the lowest audible frequency would be assuming that the speakers can produce it? Because I read somewhere that room sizes are proportional to wavelengths, meaning you can't hear 25hz in a small room. Thanks and have a good day!

  • @8minutestorm A square room like that needs a lot of bass trapping. Go to the RealTraps web site and you'll find many articles and videos that explain the basics. All of the information applies whether or not you buy from RealTraps. But it's a myth that low frequencies require large room dimensions. If that were true you'd never hear deep bass in headphones or in your car.

  • @EthanWiner That's excellent news, thank you!

  • Thank you so much for the Video, it is very informative. Please make more video about acoustic treatment for at home Mastering. And how RMC from JBL Verses acoustically treated room like yours? Would you have both?

  • @thagek2 Electronic room "correction" is not nearly as capable as bass traps, and it can't do anything for mid and high frequencies. It can be somewhat useful if you already have enough bass traps. Go to the RealTraps web site, Articles page, then look for my Audyssey Report.

  • When the Video was about to kick in I thought I was Rick rolled at first because of the drum roll hehe ... cool set up

  • Oh, that was brilliant and sweet. Mine is odd ball cat that likes climbing into the wardrobe for catnap. Most times my cat will catnap right beside me on the bed. I guess hes listening out for me?

  • I like your black cat. Is it a Bombay cat or Burmese? I have black cat but nowhere near as large as your cat.

How many bass traps can a 15 foot length room by 10 feet by 7feet hold?

    Cheers

  • @EmpireLS56KW That's bear, who sadly died last year. He was not a purebred as far as I know. More photos are on the Family page of my website ethanwiner (dot com) if you care. As for bass traps, the more you have, the flatter the response will be. It's really that simple. Remember that rectangle rooms have 12 corners, not just four!

  • Great Video, You've helped me a lot, I learned all this stuff at school but i forgot all of that....

thanks to your video - i know now how to fix my acoustic problems in my studio! Cheers

  • Thanks so much Ethan!

You have been a massive help. First saw an article of yours in my favourite mag Sound on Sound and then came across your video and acoustic treatment company!

    Cheers!

  • I'm going to attempt my 1st 4" bass traps tonight. I have three OC703 2x4 sheets. I wonder how much of a difference this will make. I also have 18 sheets of 1" 703 that I'm going to use for early reflections but i'm going to do the bass traps 1st. Hope my GF can hear the difference

  • this reminds me of something . I was in a group and one time me and the bass player switched roles. well he has some drumming background and I have some guitar background. I must say b/c he has a left handed bass guitar it was generally awkward. ANYHOW, reguarding the things you said about bass notes. I thought it was me but now I'm really convinced it was the room. I couldn't tell, standing right next to the bass amp, what notes I was playing exactly, I mean +/- a half step off. Thx4postingVid!

  • why do you choose amplified speakers instead of having unamplified speakers and separate amplifier(s)? My brother just bought a 6000 loudspeaker system and a pair (I think it's the price for a pair) of your front speakers is about 550 dollars. Did my brother pay 6000$ for nothing?

  • @maxohpne Speaker quality and pricing varies enormously.

  • Good informative video, but the mannequins of you and your wife are creeping me out.

  • @gotham61 That's on purpose. :->)

  • Thanks for the pragmatic, sound advice, Ethan. I'll pass this YouTube on to my fellow emplyees at Triad Speakers. All the best to you and yours this holiday season...Paul Scarpelli

  • I wouldn't mind panels, but they make the room more clutter. great info on the video. :)

  • hi, in my sound productiob course, we have to design a control room....i have co-efficient of absorbtion charts, to say how much% of a sabine materials take out, but how do i find out how much of the frequency i need to take out of the room using these materials, for it to stop being a problem frequencey?

  • @deanmacgregor: This is too complex to explain in YouTube comments. If you ask in one of the public audio forums such as Gearslutz (dot com) or MusicPlayer (dot com) I'll be glad to elaborate. Click my name above to find my web site, and email me a link to your post.

  • this guy is on the ball. thanks

  • Thanks so much for these vids, Mr. Winer!!!

  • Would i still need to decouple my speakers if its on concrete floors? thanx for the vid, its great advice.

  • Maybe. This is a terrible place for a technical discussion. Ask me at Gearslutz and I'll reply more fully.

  • For a small control room what's your opinion of using curtains for say the back wall for sound absorption, diffusion or even both?

    Thanks for the great videos!

  • Curtains do not absorb to a low enough frequency to be considered a good solution for a music room.

  • how about a heavy shipping blanket?

  • Even very heavy moving blankets have no affect at bass frequencies. For that you need a more suitable material, and it must be at least 3 inches thick or even thicker. How thick depends on how low you want to absorb to.

  • hi i was wondering how could i make my room optimized for great audio with diy material? ex wood egg cartons and padding. I'm making a room downstairs where i can listen to music.

thks. great job on the room.

  • @dcp10200 YouTube comments is not a good venue for a technical discussion. Start a thread in whatever audio forum you may know me from, or post in my forum at MusicPlayer (dot com).

  • awesome video...thanx

  • thanxs tichme alot. form argentina i salute you fabian

  • thanks the video helps me out a lot

  • love the videos Ethan. I would love to see some more solutions for some other rooms.

  • Thanks. Last year I did a video tour of my partner's home studio and its treatment, and this weekend we're doing another showing an "ultimate" treatment solution for small mixing and mastering rooms. Search my name at Vimeo (dot com) to find higher quality versions of all my videos, and look there or here in a few weeks for the next video.

  • That was fantastic thank you !

Its funny, after watching that i've breathed a sigh of relief because i was about to step into a realm i had very little knoledge about. But now i feel confident to march into my studio and get started ! After all the hard work i put into learning and researching, this almost feels like cheating. Thank you for sharing this most experienced and invaluable information with us i am most greatful !

But before i start, im off to Realtraps to find out some more.

  • Thanks to Ethan Winer. I have learned a great deal about acoustics and room treatment in the last few dyas from many different sources on the web. Ethan is sharing a great deal of long earned knowledge for free on the web in a lot of places. I greatly appreciate all the info you have shared, please continue to share info and do videos. Great work.

  • Christ iv'e got some work to do...

  • I guess my dad's gonna be disapointed that he hasn't got the best home theater! haha!

  • Excellent Video man, Very enjoyable and thanks for sharing, 5*

  • 1 cool geek nice vid

  • Thx a lot, Ethan!

  • i dont mean to offend. but sonar is a very basic and some what annoying program. i'm a studio tech and every studio i have seen all use protools. and i have even had someone laugh at the mention of sonar. just my personal opinion tho.

  • I don't know what SONAR has to do with this video. Regardless, it's a very capable program with outstanding MIDI support, and comes with a large collection of excellent plug-ins and software synths. If it's not your favorite DAW program, that's fine with me.

  • yeh, im jaust stating my opinion on software. i have heard some fantastic mixes from sonar and protools. but each to there own i guess. a very good video, very informative

  • @DJJorg151 - I've used plenty of DAW programs and I think you really have to not become complacent with it... Most of these DAW programs are very capable and what it comes down to is spending the time to sit down a learn it inside out. Pro tools is a great DAW program and I have a 201 certification in it but there is still somethings that will frustrate me about the program. So my point is whatever works and creates product flow, is a good program!

  • @BluePaisley I'm an aspiring audio engineer, studyting a technical degree in the field, working on a Pro Tools 101 class. I absolutely agree. There are a few people in my program who are absolute masters of ableton live . . . This program and others like it can be the bee's knees! It's all in how you put it to use. Pro Tools is addmittedly awesome, but can host ableton anyway, so learn it all!

  • great tutorial. Exactly what i was looking for !

  • Not bad but an amateur move. With no diffusors or absorbtion you won't get such good results. And when you say that electronics don't matter so much I totally have to disagree with you. In my listening room it makes a large difference if I use my Computer or my micromega Stage 5 CD-Player for CD playback. I would advise you to move the computer to a different room because it makes a lot of noise.

  • Not sure who this is addressed to, but I have 45 absorbers and 4 diffusors in my living room, though the diffusors were added after this video was made. My Dell laptop is totally silent. Good electronics are a commodity item these days, and you don't have to spend thousands of dollars to get excellent quality.

  • It makes a noticeable difference if I use my Computer for CD playback or my micromega Stage 5. My Tube Amplifier makes much cleaner sounds than my old transistor amplifier. I use cables of copper silver alloy which do make a difference. Computers don't have that, and I'm not modyfying my computer. But yes, Room treatment is still the most important factor. Electronics won't make a large difference until you have a room as good as yours or mine.

  • This is gorgeously done man, kudos to you kind sir!

    Thanks!

  • You really know your stuff. Can you make more videos?

  • wow my hometheater is jsut in a bare room, i can only imagine if i had traps to minimise reverb!

  • Very good - thank you!!!! More please!!!

  • Thanks for the info, good stuff.

  • a bit fast paced, but very informative! i also liked the fact that you used a real world type room, not an ideal setting.

  • Ok I just finished 2 small 2' x 2' bass traps from 2x4's. I filled the inside with carpet padding and then covered it with some shaggy carpet. Will the materials I used be effective?

  • It's easier for both of us if you ask questions in my Acoustics forum. YouTube doesn't allow web links in these messages, so just Google ethan winer acoustics forum to find it.

  • Thanks for the info Ethan.

  • this guy knows his shit. good info

  • Thanks! This video is helping me set up my home studio!

    Cheers!

  • You are awesome!

I'm going to use this for amateur recording studio.

  • its the best top of the line piece of info ever givin.u r the man all the way. i bought thx wires4my yamaha amp to hook up my bose cube speakers i use for surrounds and didnt no where was a perfect place to leave thanks 2u now i do.keep on showin info on sound thanx.

  • Bose isnt vey good so room treatments make them worse go with Sony KLH or JBL seperate speakers they will blow them away

  • More videos please!

  • thank you! I use the JBL lsr series monitors and love them. Once i get your sound treatment, I will be in heaven!

  • WOW. Man, you sure know wat you're doing! Great vid! I read your guide on the internet aswell. Very in-depth and detailed. However, i only will be using towels and duvets or watever, because i have no budget!

  • I own Ethan's Real Traps and highly endorse them. They work great.

  • Dear Sir,

I am an M Sc Acoustic Physics student just completed my course from Salford Uni. We got an assignment to design a listening room. I watched this video after I submiteed it.

It a good video which gives an idea about the listening room. So if u dont mind please post similat videos to help students like me

    thanks

    suresh

  • LOL, hi Suresh! I'm working on this assignment just now, isn't this funny? :D

    See you after Easter!

  • EXCELLENT video, thank you very much. I am building some bass traps and acoustic panels right now, this video is very helpful. :)

  • Great vid. Thank you for it.

  • thanks! great help. can u do a video on treating a small project rec studio?

  • There are other videos on the RealTraps site, and I just created a commercial DVD that has a LOT of audio advice including a tour of my home studio. Go to my personal home page ethanwiner dot com for the link. But for the most part, a project studio will be treated the same as my living room.

  • Thank YOU ! useful vid

  • Thanks Ethan for sharing your Acoustic treatment knowledge your products are awsome and your website is very informative. Cheers

  • Thank you very much for this video its definatly going to help deciding where to invest next in my home theather

  • do you have something for the casual listener that wants to improve their listening experience using less complicated measures?

  • POST MORE VIDEOS!! extremely informative video. I have always wanted to do something about my sound room and now I'm totally encouraged and motivated to do more to improve the acoustics. Thanks for your video.

  • More! Nice Video! It helps very much!

  • 5 stars!

  • Nice setup in that room!
