actually little homies, derek doesn't just "press play." Pay attention to how he operates the monome 64. he creates his own beat loops, then loops them, programming each song, live. then he brings in the samples. either way, hes not shredding a guitar, but he's operating the monome like a mad scientist. you're kinda givin' him shit, but it takes skill to program 64 buttons for each song (mappe dto a laptop), then try to remember on the fly which beat goes with each of his 64 buttons.

@mrcrunkle , that's all live PA is when your talking about computer music. Tweaking effects knobs and dropping samples over a rhythm track. Sometimes we'll spice things up with some live musicians of sorts, but all this stuff is a solo act. 90% of what you hear is PROGRAMMED...it was never played live...and couldn't be played live. So, basically the performance is just a live remix of a bunch of pre-recorded audio tracks with live effect manipulation. That's all.....

The musical bonding between musicians, or the chemistry, has been removed with music like this. It's just one guy composing the entire piece. You can't really play more than one instrument at once. But the way you're talking about it "dancing and drinking" is just you being a douche. That's not what a performance is, "effect manipulation is sub par".. what a moron

Watch him the whole show and see how much he works up there. Unless the musician has the resources it is unlikely you will get much of a show outside of the live manipulation. Effects and Dynamics make tracks...and they're much more colorful and expressive than an instrument of any type. So to say that manipulating effects is "sub par" just shows you don't know wtf you're talking about kid

@laughldd Yes it can! The instruments are called turntable, laptop, MPD32, and monome. STS9, Derek (PL) and other talented producers of today use a variety of electronic instruments that can be played with a surprising level of virtuosity. But doing this all with acoustic instruments? forget it.
