  • Dig these kind of charts

  • if this bands music is old I must be double ancient. I still listen to Parker an Rollins, oh well...

  • We are going to the Village Vanguard to see them again tonight. When we are in NYC on a Monday we see the VJO. An essential experience for Jazz lovers. Not to be missed!

  • THIS IS AWESOME!

  • If you don't know good music let me key you in THIS VIDEO

  • Any chance of putting in the titles of the tunes and full personnel?

  • killing band!!!

  • john riley is boss

  • excellent excellent music

  • Long live EXCELLENT music played by TOP QUALITY musicians.

  • I saw them about 4 years ago, they were great!! They won the Grammy the following year. They are one of the top "big bands/" Mike in Smithfield, VA

  • Dick Oatts and Billy Drewes killing it! Who knew that two sopranos could sound that good in unison?!

  • Great chart Jim McNeely style, great relaxed swinging band. Very tasteful rhythm section work, hats off to John Riley. I loved Mel Lewis and his loose and dynamic playing, but I think John is doing a great job filling Mel's shoes. I loved to listen, and look forward to heaering and seeing the band live soon.

  • Jim is a great composer/arranger and the band is comprised of really great players. I mean what else is there. If you don't like it that's your prerogative but that is opinion not fact. I like it.

  • Ignore the ignorant and presumptuous here who have presumed themselves to be in possession of anything even remotely resembling sensitive musical discernment. "Too hip for the room" is too square to judge the VJO. The naysayers don't get it, that's all. They just don't get it.

  • These guys are among the greatest musicians in the world. The creme de la creme

  • This is wonderful.

  • awesome

  • I am really quite astonished and disturbed by the negative comments about this band and its wonderful musicians and the great composers who have written and continue to write for them. Epithets like "old fashioned" are missing the point. Good music aspires to be timeless. This particular arrangement by Mcneely is subtle, harmonically rich and well structured. It grooves and delights. The lack of respect for this band and its history saddens me.

  • @dandiacal No kidding

  • @dandiacal ...Well said, monsieur. Music,, as it is played here by such outstanding musicians who are masters of their instruments and craft will forever be appreciated by thousands the world over. People who affect a taste for so much the pretentious modern 'racket' that passes off as music don't know a good melody, or to use the demotic, a good 'tune' when they hear it. Thank you for this post, PlanetArts! sd goh (malaysia)

  • @dandiacal I think he was going too much for Jovino Santos thing. I don't think it works as well for big band as ideas on his first release - Lickety Split.

  • @dandiacal: I agree. If one can't hear the great timeless beauty and rich inventiveness in this arrangement then I think we who enjoy it would be hard-pressed to explain it to them. The quality of the music really speaks for itself.

  • This chart is killin, period.

  • Agree very boring-- these cats are gettin too old-- same old thing every Monday. Where is Thad Mel Snooky Jerome-- real jazz mucicians

  • Old fashion bs who cares?

And John Mosca is a lazy Marxist

  • wooooooo

  • Good band, boring music

  • muito interessante entender o quanto tem pra contribuir edu lobo, hermeto paschoal, tom jobim

enfim, a música brasileira instrumental, para o cenário contemporâneo do jazz. obrigada a todos do vanguarda jazz orchestra !!

  • Anyone have "Soft Lights, Hot Music"?

    One of my favorites

  • rich perry!!!!!

  • one of my favorites!!!!!!

  • The best contemporary big band in the world!

  • okay, woops, so he wrote it in 1982. More proof of how ahead of his time he is and how relevent his 25 year old composition is to todays jazz world. Thanks for finally putting this on record Jim and the band.

  • It sounds pretty 1982 to me. A-team, love boat stile.

  • @nandoanalog You have to be kidding me! I agree it's 1980's ish, but love boat and A-Team? No way!

  • @trane1959 That is a boring nothing chart even in 1982

  • @rockin3b Yea dude this arrangement sucks and the entire group is boring. Shit is whack.

  • is it time to post the extended version of this with Billy and Dick's solo and the end of the tune, that final, amazing, startling chord. McNeely is the king and has been for thirty years. The most important living composer/arranger!!!!

  • hmmmm....is Brookmeyer still on this Earth? Predictably uninformed....

  • are you assuming I don't know who Bob Brookmeyer is? You sir are the ass. Don't start with me, little man.

  • Not assuming anything, just rereading your above post and ask the same question. I love McNeely and play his music often, but "most important living composer/arranger"? Little man? Who is the little man here? I read your comments and see that it is not me.

  • i think it's just funny how trane and miles are fighting over this. do you have to start shit on everything rubinstein?

  • yeah I do. Brookmeyer's biggest conribution to the lexium of big band writing was from the mid 1960's to the early 1980's. He is still writing good music, but it is not as significant as that era's music. McNeely is still the guy out there in the world, writing the most signifcant music of our time, now.

  • I was right, three weeks before I had the CD!!!! Las Cucarachas Entran.

  • here your praising them, on other vids your cutting the trumpet section. Get a life codsack.

  • Looks like they got Smulyan back on bari for this one. Is he playing on all the tracks?

  • got the CD and he is, but he only did the recording. Basile is da man!!!!!

  • has to be new Jim McNeely music. great stuff, please post more if you have. Best big band in the land.
