We are going to the Village Vanguard to see them again tonight. When we are in NYC on a Monday we see the VJO. An essential experience for Jazz lovers. Not to be missed!
Great chart Jim McNeely style, great relaxed swinging band. Very tasteful rhythm section work, hats off to John Riley. I loved Mel Lewis and his loose and dynamic playing, but I think John is doing a great job filling Mel's shoes. I loved to listen, and look forward to heaering and seeing the band live soon.
Jim is a great composer/arranger and the band is comprised of really great players. I mean what else is there. If you don't like it that's your prerogative but that is opinion not fact. I like it.
Ignore the ignorant and presumptuous here who have presumed themselves to be in possession of anything even remotely resembling sensitive musical discernment. "Too hip for the room" is too square to judge the VJO. The naysayers don't get it, that's all. They just don't get it.
I am really quite astonished and disturbed by the negative comments about this band and its wonderful musicians and the great composers who have written and continue to write for them. Epithets like "old fashioned" are missing the point. Good music aspires to be timeless. This particular arrangement by Mcneely is subtle, harmonically rich and well structured. It grooves and delights. The lack of respect for this band and its history saddens me.
@dandiacal ...Well said, monsieur. Music,, as it is played here by such outstanding musicians who are masters of their instruments and craft will forever be appreciated by thousands the world over. People who affect a taste for so much the pretentious modern 'racket' that passes off as music don't know a good melody, or to use the demotic, a good 'tune' when they hear it. Thank you for this post, PlanetArts! sd goh (malaysia)
@dandiacal I think he was going too much for Jovino Santos thing. I don't think it works as well for big band as ideas on his first release - Lickety Split.
@dandiacal: I agree. If one can't hear the great timeless beauty and rich inventiveness in this arrangement then I think we who enjoy it would be hard-pressed to explain it to them. The quality of the music really speaks for itself.
okay, woops, so he wrote it in 1982. More proof of how ahead of his time he is and how relevent his 25 year old composition is to todays jazz world. Thanks for finally putting this on record Jim and the band.
is it time to post the extended version of this with Billy and Dick's solo and the end of the tune, that final, amazing, startling chord. McNeely is the king and has been for thirty years. The most important living composer/arranger!!!!
Not assuming anything, just rereading your above post and ask the same question. I love McNeely and play his music often, but "most important living composer/arranger"? Little man? Who is the little man here? I read your comments and see that it is not me.
yeah I do. Brookmeyer's biggest conribution to the lexium of big band writing was from the mid 1960's to the early 1980's. He is still writing good music, but it is not as significant as that era's music. McNeely is still the guy out there in the world, writing the most signifcant music of our time, now.
