The Evoque is so full of electronics that it tricks everyone into thinking it's a good car, but the electronic packages it contains are not that brilliant in the sense that you can find better in other cars. Since when is the best equipped car, the better? And if so, why isnt the ML the best SUV? The Evoque is also VERY expensive! Plus, the Evoque is rubbish without the electronic assist systems. it is rubbish to drive without. It understeers like a pig and does not go off the road. Bad chassis.
@watannen Hey dude. What are you, a non-Range Rover guy or something? haha. Seriously, the Range Rover Evoque is a good car in general. Range Rover is good period. Electronics cannot do EVERYTHING, there are obviously some Range Rover hocus pocus under the hood. Goooo Range Rover + Land Rover!!!
But - ditch the explanation about how you test, it's not very interesting ; )
also the 'face-off'..it's fun for you guys in the office, boring to watch. I'd rather see the cars in action, maybe a timed on-road then off-road course? Oh, and swap the rock-soundtrack for something less cliched. Some of your other review videos are far better - keep up the good work!
As much as I love the Evoque, I don't believe it belongs in the SUV class of cars. It's a cross over. If I cant pull my boat, roughly 4000lbs., or something bigger then IMO it is not an SUV. Would have loved the Explorer to go father, and see a Jeep Grand Cherokee or Landrover LR4. Half of the cars tested are off-road sports or cross overs, not SUV's. Do your homework next time and do a study on what people think is the best new SUV.
These dudes need to stay away from miami ....lol and the fashion model beverly hills crap and test a TOYOTA 4 RUNNER.....or jeep GRAND CHEROKEE then talk........
came to the right conclusion good job! not sure why half the people who watch are moaning? Should only have american, british and german SUV's they are the originators what have the asians offered this segment?
4:50 "...only has a turbo-charged 4-cylinder engine...". This statement, IMO, is a dumb-ass statement. The Evoque's engine may be "only" a 4-cylinder, but it's got 240hp and does 0-60 in 7.1s!
Displacement isn't everything douchebag. You want a bigger engine, get the Evoque's big-brother. And not the Sport because it's not a good off-road
12:30 Mercedes did not "invent the segment" , these guys don't seem to be very objective or well informed, they are "favoring" cars rather than simply evaluating them against each other and different criteria as far as i concerned. as far as "inventing" the segment, that would have to be the Ford Explorer or Jeep Grand Wagoneer. ... and i don't have any reason to be partial here or favor any one brand, i'm german.
10:08 - Dodge Durango .... "the engines don't feel that very powerful" not even the 5.7 HEMI "it just doesn't go" ?!!?? WTF !? this guy is either a total dork or paid for by one of the import brands. (or maybe even both) as even the pentastar v6 in the durango packs plenty of punch, seriously, i wonder where the guy has been to not feel that even the HEMI was powerful enough.
Motortrend needs to start testing more vehicles that non-millionaires can afford. I mean, come on. They didn't even include the Jeep Grand Cherokee in the mix. If they had put the JGC in there, it most likely would have won. It is best in the SUV segment for offroad capability, on road manner, luxury fit and finish, and price point. I really think that they need to do the test over and pick a proper, non-expensive SUV.
OMG how can the EVOQUE be chosen??? wtf? what happened to the mercedes? and other powerful SUV's like the X5, porche cayenne, Land cruiser e.t.c?? this video is rubbish and the MINI??? is that an SUV?? wow...........
Are you fucking crazy?!? My Ford Touch is the best thing a car could have in this days and SYNC is a very good tool while driving...soo i think this video is a piece of shit.
As much as I agree with your choice (the Evoque is, to me, the best car in the market right now), I was disappointed with this video. The dull, boring speech kind of took away all the excitement that any of those cars could provide. Not to mention the initial contenders. Seriously, no Asian SUVs (Toyotas, Kias, Hyundais)? No Cherokee? No X5? No other Land Rover models? You really forgot to do your homework.
And, for Christ's sake, the Mini is not, i repeat, NOT, an SUV.
@ruithealmightyYT They put in two Dodge's and a fuckin 2000 based Wrangler and no Volvo XC60 , no Mitsubishi Outlander or Audi Q5.. I still don't get it . Was this a competition between real SUV's or smaller Crossovers..cause what they selected there is a shit mix between these 2 categories.. and how can you possibly compare a Mini with a ML and a Touareg in size and a 5.7 dodge with a bounch of 4 and 6cyl german engineered diesels in efficiency..i just don't get it..
@ruithealmightyYT its the comparison of brand new models you stupid!! OR the ones which are heavily upgraded. BMW X5 was there on last year's competition.
This may have already been asked/answered, but is it safe to say that the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was not included because it's so similar to the Dodge Durango?
Why would you get the Ford Explorer Eco Boost? I mean you guys know that the Eco Boost isnt good. Cmon man. I think the Ford Explorer should have been passed. Oh and where is the Toyota Highlander? Like c'mon.
Where are the audi Q5 and Audi Q7?! wtf?! and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee is an amazing vehicle. you guys chose crap to review. LOST POINTS IN MY BOOK.
im sorry but if the durango goes the ford explorer goes and you cant just forget about good handling terrain options similar to the Jeep GC and Range Rover and the ford would of done better in the finals and it has huge trunk space and you just get the hang of the my ford touch
The Evoque is a game changer; it gives Land Rover a new market, and has turbo-4 that's more fuel efficient, inside the interior and its shifter is Jaguar-esque. With its starting price in the mid-$40k, it'll give BMW X3, Audi Q5, Lexus RS, and other luxury compact SUVs a run for its money. Also, it'll give a new audience to Range Rover.
I bought a Saab 9-4X I have no problems with this Crossover I will agree when the boost gauge goes up its not like my 2001 Saab 9-3 viggen but is still plenty quick. I have had Saabs for a long time. I'm not a fan of the other crossovers like a 2 door crossover is useless and the merc and BMW are double the price. And I never cared for dodges styling and the mini wtf?!? I'll stick with my Saab I don't care about there situation right now I hope they pull through and make more cars the 9-4X is a
I'd like to know what they're smoking at Motor Trend magazine and if I can have some.
In the new "suv of the year competition", they listed the Unlimited Sahara, hardtop AUTOMATIC transmission, as being .01 seconds slower to 60 mph than the TWO DOOR MANUAL with a friggin soft top. Are they out of their minds???? The 4 door unlimited is almost 1000 lbs heavier then the 2 door.
It blows my mind that Motor Trend could make such an error, in not only their magazine, but also on their site.
wtf is with all these new ugly motherfuckin SUV's like seriously they look like shit and honestly how in the hell did a 2 door win this? a SUV needs to move more than a sportscar can
i think the vw shoulda won coz its still very capable off road it haws locking diffs and low range and thats all you need to have a great offroader its better than the evoque off road and it has a better interior and its more reliable since its a range rover the touareg is a very good suv
the explorer is out after round 1 wtf! its got awesome mileage and enough horsepower and torque to get you where you need to0 and tow 5000 pounds great family vehicle and the evoque is the winner even bigger wtf just because this is the first practical range rover so let me get this straight since its predecessors where nothing more than 100k fashion statements and not to mention the maintenance of a rover now its super great now idk about this evoques quality but i wouldn't hold my breath
Auto journalists had many issues with the MyFord Touch system; despite its good handling, Terrain options similar to the Jeep GC and Range Rover. that MyFordTouch system completely frustrated them.
@76carmel but how could they speak badly of the ecoboost engine it is the smartest thing ford has done in a while and it could quite possibly rival the Germans with their recent turbo diesel innovations and maybe even get the american auto industy on its feet
Yee I must say that rover is nice, but in my top 3 I would count rover merz and vw in, they forgot about porsche cayenne, I'll bet that would get to the top
Well I suppose the other requirement here was for innovation, and while the ML is certainly up to par with technology, powertrain, performance, initial quality in materials and construction, et al, it doesn't offer anything new. I'd have to agree, I would rather have the ML.
So the ML scored higher in every single category than Evoque and yet it wasn't the winner? What's the point of rating cars in these 'categories' if you guys are not picking a winner by which one does best!? Next time just make a list and throw darts at it - the one with most darts is the winner!
@edthetallguy It's a winner if you have $75,000 to spend a vehicle. One of the criteria they were looking at was value, and for the money, you could buy two or even three of some of the other choices. You do the math...
@guitardc59 I should correct myself - there is no star ratings for the Evoque. I guess Motor Trend doesn't feel the need to provide a comparative rating for the winner. As for the price, yes, the diesel is expensive, but for the gasoline version, the ML as tested comes at $63k while a similar Evoque is almost $58k. And given that Land Rovers are renown for poor reliability, I'd gladly pay $6k more for the ML.
As someone who doesn't like SUV's at all, I think that they made the right choice. It looks good, drives well on the road (apparently), and isn't bad off road where nobody will ever take it anyway (who wants to wreck a new 50000 SUV). To me it's really an expensive small car with added capability, and there's not too much wrong with that.
the only suv's are the durango, wrangler, maybe the explorer since it's built off the taurus's platform, and possibly the mercedes... thats it... they're all crossovers built on car platforms and raised slightly off the ground.. doesn't make them suv's
@tianlong55 We've had 8 over 7 years. Yes, they have been reliable. Settle down. We have 2 at the moment. 4 total counting my mom and dad, and #5 on the way. That being my sister's Evoque Dynamic Coupe. I guess that would make a total of, 15 when I include my extended family over 7 years.
Check out Jaguar's reliability now with JD Power. It's in the top 3 in the world. Rover and Jag share many different parts. You know: Jaguar Land Rover? JLR? Oh, you probably didn't by your comment.
@tianlong55 By the way, I just went to your profile. What are you? Like 10 years old? Why don't you make snide comments after you actually own a car. And really? You work for a "crack" website? Yeah, we'll listen to your opinion. It's little pricks like you that think you're a big deal on the net. If I only got to see you in person. Wait, would that be on your bike? Could you bring your laptop with you, too? Maybe we could find the latest hack to your smartphone.
I won't deny that the Evoque is certainly an awesome looking vehicle, and revolutionary for Land Rover of old. No argument there. I was REALLY happy that the Mercedes didn't walk away with the title. With that sticker price pushing 70 grand, it damn well BETTER be engineering perfection. Certainly an interesting test though, they're right; the SUV market is more diverse than ever now. I wouldn't really say that it even exists anymore as a single market, it's branched out so far now.
clearly american cars are the definition of shit you wasted your time and wtf you cant. compare an x3 with an mclass shouldve picked the x5 and then shit goes down
its funny because all the so called "SUV's" they had were barely even SUV's they were all crossovers. they didnt even bring in the actual SUV's like land cruiser, sequia, QX, Tahoe, Subruban, Escalade. true body on frames
All of the conversations seemed very forced. The whole point/counterpoint on every vehicle that they would talk about just seemed like something out of a bad infomercial. I know that these guys are not actors, but still, how about playing to some of your strengths? You could just as easily tell us about the pros and cons of the different vehicles without making it seemed like a fake and forced scripted conversation.
The Evoque is so full of electronics that it tricks everyone into thinking it's a good car, but the electronic packages it contains are not that brilliant in the sense that you can find better in other cars. Since when is the best equipped car, the better? And if so, why isnt the ML the best SUV? The Evoque is also VERY expensive! gadgetguy4000 3 months ago
the explorer is out after round 1 wtf! its got awesome mileage and enough horsepower and torque to get you where you need to0 and tow 5000 pounds great family vehicle and the evoque is the winner even bigger wtf just because this is the first practical range rover so let me get this straight since its predecessors where nothing more than 100k fashion statements and not to mention the maintenance of a rover now its super great now idk about this evoques quality but i wouldn't hold my breath

@handfulofpeter
Auto journalists had many issues with the MyFord Touch system; despite its good handling, Terrain options similar to the Jeep GC and Range Rover. that MyFordTouch system completely frustrated them.
76carmel 2 months ago
@76carmel but how could they speak badly of the ecoboost engine it is the smartest thing ford has done in a while and it could quite possibly rival the Germans with their recent turbo diesel innovations and maybe even get the american auto industy on its feet

Next time just make a list and throw darts at it - the one with most darts is the winner!
edthetallguy 4 months ago
@edthetallguy It's a winner if you have $75,000 to spend a vehicle. One of the criteria they were looking at was value, and for the money, you could buy two or even three of some of the other choices. You do the math...
guitardc59 4 months ago
@guitardc59 I should correct myself - there is no star ratings for the Evoque. I guess Motor Trend doesn't feel the need to provide a comparative rating for the winner. As for the price, yes, the diesel is expensive, but for the gasoline version, the ML as tested comes at $63k while a similar Evoque is almost $58k. And given that Land Rovers are renown for poor reliability, I'd gladly pay $6k more for the ML.

In Europe you can get the "Terrain Tech" package which makes it very capable off road.

Aren't these all technically crossovers? With the exception of the Durango and possibly the Wrangler Unlimited?

Mini Countryman ? MORON !

As someone who doesn't like SUV's at all, I think that they made the right choice. It looks good, drives well on the road (apparently), and isn't bad off road where nobody will ever take it anyway (who wants to wreck a new 50000 SUV). To me it's really an expensive small car with added capability, and there's not too much wrong with that.

the only suv's are the durango, wrangler, maybe the explorer since it's built off the taurus's platform, and possibly the mercedes... thats it... they're all crossovers built on car platforms and raised slightly off the ground.. doesn't make them suv's
cool12328 4 months ago
@fishelfinder just because your family owns 2 land rovers that haven't had any problems, does not mean they are very reliable.
jesus you sound like the reliability of a fricking brand revolves around you

@tianlong55 We've had 8 over 7 years. Yes, they have been reliable. Settle down. We have 2 at the moment. 4 total counting my mom and dad, and #5 on the way. That being my sister's Evoque Dynamic Coupe. I guess that would make a total of, 15 when I include my extended family over 7 years.
Check out Jaguar's reliability now with JD Power. It's in the top 3 in the world. Rover and Jag share many different parts. You know: Jaguar Land Rover? JLR? Oh, you probably didn't by your comment.
fishelfinder 4 months ago
@tianlong55 By the way, I just went to your profile. What are you? Like 10 years old? Why don't you make snide comments after you actually own a car. And really? You work for a "crack" website? Yeah, we'll listen to your opinion. It's little pricks like you that think you're a big deal on the net. If I only got to see you in person. Wait, would that be on your bike? Could you bring your laptop with you, too? Maybe we could find the latest hack to your smartphone.
fishelfinder 4 months ago
