My Cousin Shelley sings this...it's her mother's favorite...when she sings for her mother she ask her if she has any request...and she replies idc what you sing just sing Give me Jesus!
I know, isn't that odd. Usually they sing songs from their recent album releases when they perform on the Tonight Show. I guess it was a once in a lifetime performance.
What a beautiful, beautiful performer she is. I remember seeing this back then on TV when I was miserable & working in crappy job. I was so inspired by it. I finally left that job. Little did I know then I'd be performing this with my own HS choir 15 years later. Just beautiful!!!
This song is just what I needed this morning. Thank you Annette, for sending me the link. She has a beautiful voice and the words of the song, Oh my!!!!
Wow, Annette. This really blessed me! I also remember when this aired on the "new" Tonight
Show the year I graduated from Tuskegee University. I recorded the program too, but it was on a tape cassette machine placed next to the TV, which I have now lost. "Give Me Jesus" is my favorite spiritual and I remember every nuance of Kathleen Battle's voice and the late Kenny Kirkland playing the piano. Thank you so much for posting this! I never thought I'd see it again.
Thank you for sharing your comment. I am SO blessed to hear this! This performance has blessed a few people who came up my house but now it can bless more people. Believe it or not, I had searched the internet and could not even find an audio recording of Kathleen doing this song, no less a video. That's when I decided to put the video up. My husband came up with a genius idea of using our new digital camera to record from the TV screen as the tape played.
Aneette, thanks for uploading this song. It has touched me in a very special way! I belong to a Kathy Battle fan club in yahoo. I'll send you the link in a message in case you wan tto join!
I'm glad you were moved by this performance too. It seemed to bring a hush over the whole audience as she sang this very simple but potent song. I first saw her on a PBS special with Jessye Norman. They did old spirituals. I fell in love with her then and there. She has a beautiful childlike quality about her.
Check out Jay's face after her performance. It looks like he was taken somewhere else for a few seconds and then had to gain his "composure" to end the show.
I don't know if they interviewed her. I turned the show on just before she did this song. So glad I did. It touched me to tears. I did see her do another interview with Winton Marsalas (Branford's brother) where she revealed that she was into Motown music. I think that makes for an interesting combination for an opera singer to have that in her soul also.
Thank's for posting this "forthisvideo." What an artist. So much depth and beauty in this interpretation. Even Jay had to say, "Wow, it doesn't get much better than that."
Patrick, there was a short interview. I don't remember much of what was discussed.
her vowel placement is...perfect. and her tone is so pure! that was great :)

I just watched your performance. It was very beautiful.
How did a Central Islip High School choir come to be performing in Prague?
forthisvideo 2 years ago
We participated in the 250th Anniversary celebration of Mozart's birth in Austria. After that, we traveled to Prague to perform and sight-see.

Wow. What an experience for the children to have. And for you. Nice!
