There are two ways in being a good band, which can be combined (e.g. pink floyd). The first way is being a comercial good band, basicly if you have a lot of succes, fans and airplay. The other "good" is the 'artistic' "good".

Take Miley Cyrus. She has enormous succes, even though she lacks any artistic talent, whereas no one knows the band "Russian Cycles", which have way more artistic talent.
