  • This is a good performance - I remember the disappointment in the UK when she was shaded into second place.

  • Whether Mary liked the song or not, she sang it with gusto!! Great!

  • love it, brings back happy memories

  • Incredibly, this record only reached #92 in the U.S. in December 1972 (Apple 1855) as Mary's final American hit. In contrast, this track reached #2 in England. Mary married record producer Tony Visconti in 1971 and soon after abandoned stardom to become a mother (she had two). Mary did not totally give up recording, though and, as "Mary Visconti" provided backup vocals for some acts Tony worked with. They divorced in 1981. In 1976 Mary began recording again and guested on the LPs of others. .

  • Wow takes me back to the 60s thank you lovely song, I really liked Mary Hopkin

  • Wonder what she's up to these days .

  • @harmageden She has her own label and is releasing some great music go to maryhopkinDOTcom

  • Oh dear, 1970 I was young and beautiful...now I´m just only beautiful ;)

Thanks so much for posting and walk on memory lane!

  • She alwys looks into the right camera. That would be the first thing I would fail at on stage...

  • Can you remember as schoolkids singing "take off your clothes and come inside"

  • @sosadman1 Oh yes..!!!

  • @sosadman1 It is not an invitation for humans to come inside you dummy. Mary is refering to other personas shared the same body with. Window frame refers to her eyes. Knock, Knock to a persona who wants to come inside and simply go to sleep. It is a multiple personality cast which other actors and singers may understand the same situation. Tarzan's, Johnny Weismeller, was Tarzan in the old age home. The brain cannot tell the difference between real & imagined. Tori Amos got lost

  • @iriswigle Whatever you're on can I have some :-)

  • @sosadman1 Yes I was one of them

  • @sosadman1 I was just thinking that, and the chaps who sang it were only seven! At least they didn't add the worse one that I heard in later years "My legs are always **** **** !".

  • PURE Beauty & Talent was a THEAT to the Mass-Media & they could NOT Market Her as She WAS & IS Pure Gold & NOT just FLUFF ! They can & DO sell Fluff but NOT w/ TALENT.....SHE Has IT ALL to this DAY .

  • Natural beauty, no face lifts, no botox injections, just natural beauty! How refreshing! Would love to see her now...

  • @828diamondgirl Go to maryhopkinDOTcom she has her own label and is releasing new music, she sounds better than ever ...

  • lovely song.... twiggy introduced mary to paul mcartney aftr hearing her sing, the rest is history

  • @perciful1 Why ? do you mean she is really Heather Mills ??

  • @paisleygerry : yes, can you see she is hopping a little !!

  • @paisleygerry She is not Heather Mills Senior nor is she the daughter of said Heather Mills. Someone had telephoned alias Heather to say that a girl who was in an accident was kin to her. Both parents had died in a plane accident? Her leg had been cut off. Heather, a composer, composed songs & took stage but she had many characters & she would hire look alikes to carry on with a smaller percentage & to answer mail, etc. The compser never sold the copyrights & owned studios

  • @iriswigle Are you a nutter ????

  • probably the most beautiful song ever written

  • So beautifull :)

  • brings back memmories

  • such a goodlooking girl had a crush on her

  • paige from beautiful new zealand let me in i have treats to eat lol

  • Is it just me or are Welsh girls absolutely beautiful!?

  • OK I am wound up now, How can anybody actually say they do not like this, have you gone stone mad? are you on crack? are you deaf, this is innocent, this is lovely this is the real world, this is fresh air how can you deny it????????????

  • Oh dear...us schoolboys back then...'knock knock who's there now as the night is falling take off your clothes and come inside'.

'Climb the stair and as I say a prayer for someone who could share my situation, but instead as I lay down my head, I have to leave it all to solo masturbation....

  • For me the best version of this very beautiful song.-Thank you for sharing....

  • A true English Rose if ever there was , remember this well , i was five years old ,

  • @bubs101able A true Welsh rose ...

  • @richpat

So Wales is a little island all of it's Own ,!! im guessing there's still Human life there what ever nationality iv been on this plannet long enough too realise a True Master such as Mary Hopkins .

  • @bubs101able No not an island perhaps you have us mixed up with Ireland? Wales is a country and a Principality we are part of the UK we have England to the east and the Atlantic Ocean and Irish Sea on the west.

  • @richpat

Yes and very rich in beauty been too tenby and saundersfoot im observant of the small factors too , like people as well as mary you also have Cath zitajones Tom jones i know you have your troubles too just like us here in main land britan , i have a distant female friend from port talbot god bless her .

  • Great song, amazingly beautiful woman (she has some of the most beautiful facial structure I'd ever seen on a woman), if there was still the star system I'd rate it 5/5. I wish she were still as well known as she was in the 60s, but thanks to YouTube, a lot of great songs from the past can be archived for not just people who were there but also young people (teens, 20 somethings, and 30 somethings) that appreciate good music.

  • @MVillani1985 She is still as beautiful, go to maryhopkinDOTcom, she has been releasing albums on her own label MHM

  • prečudovita

  • Thanks for that richpat. I will check the site out. I'd like to hear some of her more recent music

  • what happened to mary? quite a nice singer. Is she english?

  • @bellabellacharlie Welsh, go to maryhopkinDOTcom, she has been releasing albums on her own label MHM

  • you might want to look up Liv Mason singing this song, a little bit better than this version.

  • @aussiecowboy So true. Thanks for the tip. :)

  • Thanks for the info. I'll definitely be checking it out. It's still a pity she isn't more in the public eye. I'm getting a bit weary of the same type of singers singing the same type of song.

  • Liked it then, like it now. I can't help thinking, though, that Mary Hopkin is something of a lost talent. She did a folky album some time around 1971 which was really haunting and ethereal - a bit Nick Drake/Sandy Denny - but for some reason it never struck a chord. Knock Knock is so sweet and simple you can't help liking it. But there's much more depth to Mary Hopkin that, I think, gets missed. I rate her highly, wherever she went.

  • @hardyfh1 She is very much 'here', and has released quite a bit on her own label, go to maryhopkinDOTcom for more info

  • Thumbs up if you're watching this on 2011 and find it more joyful than all other current music.

  • @redomisia I was in London in march/70 and remember watching this live. Loved it then and now.

  • @redomisia She was a real angel who could not be bought by fame thats the difference.

  • @redomisia yes!! this is fabulous music!! and i'm 26 :D

  • @redomisia totally agree and im 33!!

  • @redomisia 2012, sorry ;D

  • @redomisia will you allow 2012 too? ;-)

  • It sucks

  • i hated this song

  • @ironzoo1 damn that was clever of you, you were'nt even born ...

  • Great - anyone got the original?

  • when i was a kid I thought the words of this song were, "take off your clothes and come inside." I still can't help but sing those words. And could those poor back up singers be any further away??

  • @vanjane

lol I knew the words of this song when i was a kid but my friends and i used to make fun of it and change the words when we sang it too... "take off your clothes and come inside " to make fun of the song (after all why would a girl ask someone to take off their coat and "come inside " just cos the night is falling?. come inside what ? her vagina ? lol ) So u probably got the subliminal message in the song (.thats why u thought the words were take off ur clothes & come inside lol )

  • @ZEITGEISTism not sure my mind went as far as that at my tender age.

  • when i was a kid I thought the words of this song were, "take off your clothes and come inside." I still can't help but sing those words.

  • @vanjane - ME TOO!

  • @chappychap

    A solo performance!!!!!!!!!

  • I have to revise my comment after Winehouses inevitable demise.

She can thankfully no longer be compared unfavourably to Mary or any of the numerous 60's girl vocalists who could sing & look sexy without getting out of their heads on drugs or booze.

Personally I think pq9r6v3h2x & skinnwalker13 have been snorting her ashes prior to their incoherent postings, but sadly I don't care.

I'll just continue listening to talented beautiful sober living singers.

  • @mikethefoto what a fucking penis weasel !

  • @mikethefoto Mary H is still good looking today, she's over 60 too. Amy Winehouse never did anything for me, dated dull songs and I never understood why she had to sound like a black female singer, I think one Dusty Springfield got there before you Amy and did it effortlessly.

  • @3replybiz

    Thanks for that.

Apart from Ms Hopkin, I have to say that I have a soft spot for the talented & gorgeous Judith Durham.

    Oh happy times.

  • If we can just drag this thread away from Winehouse and back to Hopkin... she has amazing cheekbones. Anyone reckon she played 'hide the mars bar' as seemed contemporary behaviour?

    I'd have had a nosh.

  • She was beautiful

  • Well said Karl

  • Back in those days you had to have talent to be successful. Not just shake your tits and ass on MTV like today.

  • A great song but beaten by a worthy winner in "All kinds of everything" no doubts!!

  • @figbat1

    No & I don't care you arsehole

  • mary hopkin should be back to show todays crapp how to sing.

  • @malcolmmally She now has her own label mary hopkin music and has been releasing cd's since 2005... they are all absolute gems...

    maryhopkinDOTcom

  • MARY A LOVELY VOICE!!!!!

  • KNOCK KNOCK WHOS THERE COME IN SIDE TAKE YOUR CLOTHES AND COME IN SIDE

  • Knock knock who's there ? Jo! Jo who? Jo Mama. Take care ADonovan43

  • she's very pretty! i would be enjoying listening to her voice all day than listening to lady gaga

  • great stuff mary.people with no talent have to flash their knockers or dress outrageously or take drugs

    aka gaga

  • 1:20 "Take off your clothes and come inside!"

  • @technochocolate123 take off your coat and come inside^^

  • She looked good in a miniskirt back in the Sixties!

  • I love the simplicity of this song, and Mary's performance is mesmerising. Eurovision was still taken fairly serious by the UK then and used big name stars. There is a little part of me though that has no sympathy with performers who slag it off afterwards. They all know exactly what to expect, and we have a word in the English language, its 'no'. They all could have refused! This is one of my fave UK entries.

  • Lovely, Cheers Billy ;)

  • This is such a pure English song....In times of Bridge over Troubled Water and Let it be 1970..... so unforgettable !

  • I read an interview in which she said she hated this song and found it humiliating to be singing it for Eurovision. Because of it's success in the UK charts, she had to perform it at gigs, but she would be thinking about other things, such as her shopping list. I rather like it.

  • ENJOY my upload "fantastic version" of this song. From a bootleg. I was an audience of the Mary Hopkin Show held in Expo Hall, Osaka in midsummer 1970, while there she sang almost like AMS RAI. I like this version best. Regards, Tomoya.

  • Eurovison was the death-knell for so many UKers careers, Mary Hopkin, Lulu, Cloadagh Rodgers, Sandie Shaw...why the hell did they do it ? They must have hated singing those crap songs.

  • Take off your coat and come inside........ uh huh...

  • Those two guys in the back should be arrested for loitering...

  • Always loved this silly song. She makes it un-silly.

  • As good as Mary Hopkin is, Liv Maessen from Australia does a better verson, IMHO. It is on Youtube,

  • better that that crap from Dana

  • This song and performance has aged so much better then all kinds of everything, great performance.

  • Great set! like an Escher in 3D.

  • She Is Fantastic.Greatfull Music From The Seventies.I Love It.

  • Can't find Tamma Harbour - it's gotta be one of her best!!

  • @MrPoorboy1958 Try Temma Harbour

  • @RichXZ Thanks for that rich - found it now!!

  • @mikethefoto BLOODY BRILLIANT COMMENT and absolutely spot on

  • @mikethefoto i am agree with you .you right in this ,

  • @mikethefoto amy is dead , you dont have to like her , I did`nt , but at least show a little respect for the dead !

  • @skinnwalker13

    Respect has to be earnt.

Something that weak willed, hophead, Winehouse could never do.

The only people mourning will be the owners of "The Priory" as their main source of income has finally over-indulged once too often!

  • @mikethefoto YES YES BY A SAD MAN LIKE YOU!!!!!

  • @pq9r6v3h2x

    What are you babbling about?

Perhaps you should also stay off the chemicals & then post something coherent, now go & listen to a decent talented living singer.

  • @mikethefoto YOU YOU ARE SO SO SO SAD GET A LIFE IF YOU KNOW HOW TO

  • @skinnwalker13 YOU ARE SO SO SAD MAN

  • @mikethefoto HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT ABOUT AMY WINEHOUSE AMY WAS A GREAT SINGER!!!!!

  • @pq9r6v3h2x

Firstly, there is no need to shout, she cannot hear you.

Secondly, she was distinctly average when sober.

Thirdly she was abso;utely appalling when in her usual state of chemically induced inebriation.

Before you bang on about her legions of fans & sales, popularity is unfortunately no longer a guarantee of talent as we have all seen with Justin Beiber & others.

Just be thankful that she is no longer in torment.

  • One of the good things Paul McCartney did was find her!

Her voice still makes me warm and fuzzy when I am in the worst of moods!

  • The cutest singer in history? In the eyee of the beholder. There were two women in the New Christy Minsterals who latter performed together as Jackie and Gail. Centerfold bodies and beautiful faces. Of course, they couldn't sing. If you meant the cutest good singer ever, check out Francoise Hardy singing Mon Amie La Rose here on YouTube.

  • omg. was für schönes lied.....

  • 5*****

  • This is back when women looked like women.

  • @happymundo true that. spot on..not like today. knuckle draging swamp monsters. mary hopkin wonderful singer. as we used to say in the 70s good looking bird to..lol.

  • Did anyone ever see the spoof of Mary Hopkin and Dana on French and Saunders?

  • @shmuli9 yes, it was hysterical, I think its still on youtube.

  • MARY HOPKIN-KNOCK KNOCK WHOS THERE 1970 is an EXCELLENT POP SONG

Its the dated RECENT RUBBISH made after 1984 that we should forget about and

teach ignorant people/kids of today about the greatness of the 1960s/1970s melody

  • Oh good lord I'd forgotten all about this one! Jesus, some things are best left in the past.

  • @shatchett0 clever trick forgetting something that was released 10 years vefore you were born!

  • i love her, she is very beautiful

  • Now that is what I call a cute girly!

  • i still love you, Mary, may god bless you!

  • beautiful lady ... i was about 13-14 years old and what to a music thing we had back in 1970's called top of the pops and she was singing this song and she was looking at me looking at her and smiling at me ..i thought she was so beautiful looking at mary god bless ..after the song she said hello to me and waved goodbye ...i called out your lovely mary ...you know 5 years later she see me and said hello hello mary she said you are the young man called me lovely i said yes lol ....

  • Carina.

  • 1970, the year Ireland rocked at Eurovision with Dana lifting the title against stiff competition including that of the lovely Mary Hopkin with this song.

It was a shining light for Ireland when Dana won Eurovision, the country was in turmoil with political unrest, Then Dana won and we were getting headline news for the right reasons for a change...

  • @MusicMadGuy2010 - Thank you for sharing this perspective. I always am pleased to read about something as positive as a song contest bringing joy. Ireland's a beautiful country. The "troubles," thankfully, have not destroyed this rich, gentle and strong culture. Peace & Love.

  • i want to smile at the remarks below.

this brings back such wonderful memories!

  • Pure fantasy woman

  • I was introduced to Mary Hopkins music by a neighbour who is same gen as, I much appechiate this genre. Still not sure if I am to take off my clothes and come inside.or just my coat. Think only my coat unfortunately I am told.

  • Hello, NORVIK1602. I have posted a reply to your comment. I hope you will consider reading it with an open mind. Peace & Love to ALL who wish it.

  • If she was my daughter I would still be bathing her : )

  • @bigpaulfromthenorth she's 60

  • NORVIK1602-Hello. I'm not sure the point you're trying to make, however, I will clarify mine. Trying to teach my teenage children about RESPECTING other human beings (the WHOLE person, not just their physique) is challenging when some pop stars seem to feel they have to flash flesh to sell tickets. 60's female pop stars dressed modestly & let their TALENT get them attention. It all contributed to the more civilized, positive society we used to have. Peace & Love to you, if you want it.

  • I was 15 then and all us girls wanted to have her hairstyle!! The days of simple singalong tunes which was the idea of a song for Europe!

  • Robbed. Plain and smple.

  • This is Paul McCartney in drag circa 1970? Correct?

  • Knock Knock

    Who's There

    Boo

    Boo who?

Jeez you don't have to cry about it XD

  • So who are the two guys standing in the background while Mary is singing? They look like a couple of stalkers!

  • @bluecatky - Hello. They seem to be back-up singers. Peace & Love To ALL.

  • I love this song. I wish it had done better on the American music charts.

  • Lol the kids in 40 years time are going to say how sweet the music was in the early 21st century.

  • So nice to see a female pop star performing modestly and fully dressed. Today's "artists" could learn from her. Thanks for Posting.

  • @mjcamck Wouldn't she look even better in a burka? *rollseyes*

  • @Norvik1602 Hello. I posted a reply about 3 days ago. I can only encourage you to consider taking a look at it. Peace & Love To ALL.

  • @Norvik1602 - Good day to you. I'm a sociology student and just wondering if you'd be willing to tell me what your point is? I fully respect your right to your opinion; I just am interested in a little clarification. Thank you.

  • @mjcamck71

Norvik is after the sympathy vote.He is letting you know that he suffers from bad eyesight or has mental problems, or possibly both.

Either way he deserves our sympathy.

  • @mjcamck - and actually singing with a lovely voice.

  • @GoRetroGirl - Right you are. Mary's voice is one of a kind. She could "sing the phone book" and make it sound inviting. Best Wishes to you.

  • @mjcamck71 I agree with you 100 % my friend

  • @oldpec1 - Thank you & Best Wishes To You.

  • @mjcamck today mostly girls don't understand, that innosence is much sexier than being a bitch. showing less is just more. immagination is all^^. very sexy indeed

  • @mjcamck I so agree with you, fully dressed, a rare, "sexy treat" I always say the less clothes, the limited the talent, although give Debbie Harry credit, for as sexy and gorgeous as she looked, she rarely looked provocative, I guess she had talent and class
