This really show how little humankind knows of the universe. Of the few percent that we do know as matter, light, rays and gravitational perturbations, we are already forming huge theories about the universe. We do not know what gravity really is!. Now there are 80%+ dark-matter plus dark-energy to be learned!.

Perhaps she means that space is, for all practical intents and purposes, infinte at least for now. Since the sphere of the universe is expanding at the speed of light (technically the speed of the expansion of space, but I digress) you'd need to go faster than the speed of light to catch up with and overttake the outer edge of the universe.

Dark Matter and Dark Energy are vastly different from black holes. Dark Matter is just a fancy name for "we don't know what it is." We can't see it directly or know what it is, but we know it's there because of its gravitational effects. Dark Energy is also something that we don't know what it is, but know it's there because space is expanding while it shouldn't be given the amount of matter in the universe. Therefore, there must be some energy making the universe expand.
Black holes on the other hand defined as an object from which no light can escape within a certain distance. Basically they're created when enough matter/energy gets scrunched into a short enough distance such as when a large star runs out of fuel and collapses in on itself via gravity. Think of it as a cosmic drain; it's not dangerous unless you get within a certain distance and then you'll be pulled into what can be considered to be the ultimate trash compactor. Hope this helps.
I know what you're thinking. Dark matter is meant to account for the increased speed of stars on the farther edges of galaxies. Supermassive black holes are thought to exist at the centers of all galaxies. Why couldn't a black hole be causing this increase in speed? The reason is that a black hole would still accelerate the central stars more than the outer ones. You would still see a decrease in speed as you moved outward.

There's always talk that space is expanding. I can picture that but never what is it expanding on? or through? non space? What's on the other side of space? before space expands onto/over/through it?

We know that what we know about 'normal' matter now is good because scientists have been trying to disprove it for dozens of years and found nothing but more verification. If someone puts forward a new theory of Newtonian/quantum physics that redefines how we look at matter that theory will be subject to the same rigorous attempts to disprove it and if it survives that then whoever came up with it would be heralded as one of the smartest scientists in history.

Dark matter and dark energy are the same thing. Scientist observe two different effects that they must label with two different names. They don't understand either phenomena so how do they know they are different. If we just call it dark energy or the either or the cosmological constant, it has the effect of holding the galaxies together and also has the effect of expanding the universe at an accelerated rate.

@nikolayzou electricity and magnetism are essentially the same thing, but it is still useful to study them separately. It was necessary to study them separately, so that we could learn enough about them to finally discover what they were. Assuming your hypothesis that dark matter and dark energy are the same thing, it will still be useful to study them as separate until we have a good understanding of it.

@mikbuster You can consider dark energy as the building blocks to atomic matter. Dark energy particles contain two superimposed particles having both a positive and a negative charge. They interact with each other and also with atomic matter.
An electric field is the lining up of these dark energy particles and a magnetic field is the spinning of dark energy particles in the same direction. Dark energy is much more interesting than science currently believes.

is'nt it possible that dark matter is created by gravitational waves of the rotating galaxy pushing the matter of the galaxy together by bending space and time and that dark energy is the matter which is sucked in by the black hole in the centre of a galaxy and than spread out not in single place but literally inflating space and time on a quantum level through some sort of microscopic white holes...just a thought...

This really show how little humankind knows of the universe. Of the few percent that we do know as matter, light, rays and gravitational perturbations, we are already forming huge theories about the universe. We do not know what gravity really is!. Now there are 80%+ dark-matter plus dark-energy to be learned!.
So imagine the Area 51 scientists looking at a saucer, yes, its a container and it flies. Thats it. We have no chance in figuring out how it works. Just no way!.

Dark matter and energy is obviously just the energy and information (Like the information contained in space while a particle has left existence during quantum tunneling) that space has absorbed. Basically, its the energy and information that doesn't have, or never took a form.

If plasma cosmology gives better answers OR gives anwers mainstream concepts cant provide then sooner or later it will be embraced by community.
No need to go zelaous over any theory, especially when noone claims its definite and complete explanation how Universe works.
You know, Einstein hated quantum theory yet it didnt stop him from figure out photo-electric effect and score Noble for it ;)

You are correct. However, not many are cognizant of the fact that the scientific community can, at times, be very resistant to new ideas and new evidence. Scientists are not perfect; they are human and thus just as flawed as anybody else subject to the same emotional impulses and desires (contrary to popular belief).

Excellent presentation on the best hypotheses and latest findings in physics. There was a "slip" in saying the universe is infinite. That's metaphysics and hardly provable or disprovable simply with the empirical method.

Agreed, the universe is not infinite, simply because of space expansion. If space is getting bigger, theoretically, you could rewind space to a finite point (singularity). Not sure why she said the universe is infinite. Maybe that was her attempt at humor lol. She's a particle physicist, I'm sure she knows space can be measured.

Perhaps she means that space is, for all practical intents and purposes, infinte at least for now. Since the sphere of the universe is expanding at the speed of light (technically the speed of the expansion of space, but I digress) you'd need to go faster than the speed of light to catch up with and overttake the outer edge of the universe.

Dark Matter and Dark Energy are vastly different from black holes. Dark Matter is just a fancy name for "we don't know what it is." We can't see it directly or know what it is, but we know it's there because of its gravitational effects. Dark Energy is also something that we don't know what it is, but know it's there because space is expanding while it shouldn't be given the amount of matter in the universe. Therefore, there must be some energy making the universe expand.

Black holes on the other hand defined as an object from which no light can escape within a certain distance. Basically they're created when enough matter/energy gets scrunched into a short enough distance such as when a large star runs out of fuel and collapses in on itself via gravity. Think of it as a cosmic drain; it's not dangerous unless you get within a certain distance and then you'll be pulled into what can be considered to be the ultimate trash compactor. Hope this helps.

I know what you're thinking. Dark matter is meant to account for the increased speed of stars on the farther edges of galaxies. Supermassive black holes are thought to exist at the centers of all galaxies. Why couldn't a black hole be causing this increase in speed? The reason is that a black hole would still accelerate the central stars more than the outer ones. You would still see a decrease in speed as you moved outward.

What bothers me is that physics is such a popularity contest. Dark matter theory could be correct, but the inexplicable mass of the universe could also suggest that the equations believed to govern matter could simply be wrong.
I know it's painful to go back to the drawing board, but it's far better than compounding theory upon theory until we're mired in popular opinions and all struggling to agree with one another.
Yeah, the current ideas WORK, but they're hardly elegant.

That's what peer review is for. Anyone who says "this is all well and good but what if all the axioms and assumptions it's built upon are wrong?" doesn't understand how the science community works. Whenever a new theory/idea comes forward it's not a matter of "sweet, what else can we build on this?" It's immediately target of scrutiny, there is more 'glory' to be had in disproving the status quo than coming up with more to add to it. (cont.)

We know that what we know about 'normal' matter now is good because scientists have been trying to disprove it for dozens of years and found nothing but more verification. If someone puts forward a new theory of Newtonian/quantum physics that redefines how we look at matter that theory will be subject to the same rigorous attempts to disprove it and if it survives that then whoever came up with it would be heralded as one of the smartest scientists in history.

I must partly disagree with your assessment of peer review. Yes, it is a good system for sieving through the "muck" for the "gems" but can be quite resistant to new ideas and/or evidence. Humans are involved in the process, rendering it just a little more biased than you care to admit. Consider the careers, grant money, etc at stake sometimes. It is far from perfect.

Well duh, I brought them up in conjunction because they both describe physical reactions on an incredibly large scale and on an incredibly small scale respectively. I could have also included electromagnetic theory and other models in physics but instead I just encompassed the two major models that describe how matter acts/reacts (cont.)

As for your thoughts on peer review, well granted so long as there is a human influence all ideals and systems will be flawed. At the same time the same motivations some scientists have to follow what I've been referring to as the 'status quo' (grant money and careers to use your examples) can be the same motivations other scientists have for 'debunking' our presuppositions about science. Grant money and renowned would come in bucket-loads to the man who 'broke' our understanding of the universe

I've actually discontinued debating "dark energy/matter" with people online. It's pointless. You would think that the same Occam's Razor applied to religion and the supernatural would be applied to this topic but alas, such is not the case. No matter. (pun intended)

If someone discovered a new theory of Newtonian physics that changed the way we thought about matter it would be a great find, it would also be a great find if a new theory of quantum physics was discovered that also changed the way we viewed matter...
