I did this to my xbox once, and instead of bothering with a power brick, I just spliced up a USB cable and drew 5v from the Xbox 360 itself. Nice and tidy.
You should cut the side grill off, use a dremel tool to do it. Then keep the outer plastic side panel detached at all times. Mount the fans w/ 9v instead of 5v or 12v. It will stay silent enough as the air doesn't have to hit the plastic then the metal grilling inside. That's why it's loud. If you cut the metal grill and the plastic or leave the plastic bit off, even 12v will not be as loud and it will cool your unit by another 5C at least.
Also do a custom shroud to increase the airflow. Create a custom shroud for the HS and a duct that takes air from the side fans, and throws it into the shroud. Google Xenon shroud mod etc.
@OhNoNotMyPenis 12V will make the fans spin faster, but they are also much much louder: too much for my liking. This is the reason why I did not use 12V. This was it's super quiet - just the way i like it. If you don't mind the noise or if you manage to get ultra quiet fans, then it sounds like a plan.
@thephiber Very good video, i agree running 12v direct on xbox360 outrageously loud. If anyone is curios how loud they are →“XBox 360 improved cooling (Aircooled workstation)” After doing this mod buy a pc dust filter.
@OhNoNotMyPenis it is not that easy to plug an 12volt fan into and xbox. newer 360s have 3 pin connectors and older ones have a 4 pin but either way its not that easy
@axlemaz Interesting question! I'd say: go with the (air) flow. You want to avoid pulling air out if the internal system is trying to make it circulate through the console. Instead, you wanna use your additional fans to increase and strengthen the existing air flow. If I recall correctly (I don't have the xbox anymore) I used this configuration as it helped in that way. Hope it makes sense.
If you dont have any spare power supplies around, check out a local thrift store or goodwill/salvation army store. They usually have a pile of them, and you can pick and choose one for one or two bucks with a voltage you need.
I would get a 12v personally, because I have done the llamma xclamp fix, and I have successfully fixed the RROD 3 times now, and unless it gets some good ventilation its just gonna melt again. 12v might be overkill, but who cares, I just want the thing to stay alive.
@TuDyNo1 If you put some other fans on the side where the original fans are, check that: 1. the air is flowing in the same direction - the air should be circulating though the console. 2. the output air flow of the fans you add is similar to the original fans: you don't wanna add very strong or very weak fans as it would prevent optimal air flow. hope that makes sense! cheers!
@AGZraider15 Hi! I think if you use a USB it'll be fine: i have checked the USB characteristics on wikipedia it says the maximum voltage for a USB is 5V: basically if you have 12V fans and you use a USB - which gives 5V max - it'll be quiet :) You might wanna try it first to see if the fans aren't too slow, but my guess is that it'll be just fine :) Let us know how it goes!

i have better idea.
step one:unplug it
step two:bring your trash can
step three:put your 360 there
step four:go to store
step five:buy ps3
step six:plug it
step seven:enjoy your new life
juhotheonehanded 5 months ago
that would work alot better IF YOU FUCKING TOOK THE PLASTIC VENT OFF!

wouldnt it be better to take 12volts directly from the 360
that way there is no external power supply and the fans will spin faster

@piesnotgood
why would you use the fan connector, thats controled by the consoles temp.
just find a 12volt point and solder it to that, job done. and yes its very simple to do
