There is no real Silent Hill. And this town was only used as a reference point for the MOVIE. The Silent Hill game series has been around a lot longer, so saying that Silent Hill was based on this town is 100% wrong.

My Dad grew up in this town. They've been trying to put this fire out for 40+ years ! It's a "motherload" vein of coal that's burning, like a massive underground BBQ (a la charcoal briquettes) that sucks oxygen from fissures in the ground to fuel it's massive-inferno self --- it makes a loud sucking noise ! I've heard it ! They have tried smouldering the fire, dumping massive amounts of chemicals on it, etc.
