The bit where Jacob is down on the ground with the black smoke flying over his head looks like it could be what Locke drew as a kid that we saw in season 4 when Richard visits his house. Anyone else agree?
I tried to watch lost in the beginning but after the third season I quit. I never got to se Jacob or MIB but after looking through all the youtube vids I wish there was a edited version of lost that only had their ''cane and able'' storyline.
So if it's a monster, why is it a cloud of black smoke? And why/how does it make mechanical noises like a roller coaster if this scene of his creation is taking place in ancient times? It wouldn't know anything of those noises. What's obvious is that the material in that cave in the island is some kind of fantasy-like element that changes things and people. Mainly, I just don't understand how he falls in and turns into smoke. Why a cloud of smoke?
Im just going to throw it out there and say that the smoke isnt actually smoke and just looks like smoke. The MiB we see is his soul. Trapped and deranged to a point of leaving the island.
I'd compare MiB to Voldemort, in a way. There's the fact that one doesn't have a name and the other's is feared, but it's more so that they're both afraid to die and will do whatever it takes to stop it. But they were already dead, in a sense; Voldemort was reduced after his plan to kill Harry backfired, and MiB left some kind of empty shell behind, his physical body he was born in.
@TeagueSan he didnt become the monster... he is dead, but since jacob put his brother down there it released the smoke monster and gave it a body to turn into... The Real man in black is gone, Dead. every other time you see him in the series its the Smoke monster
@TheScottishCaboose No, the man in black IS the smoke monster, jacob throws him down there and his consciousness/spirit combined with the source and made him that way. Throughout the series you see mib manipulating people, christian, dave, ekos brother, walt, and by using dreams and visions in an attempt to kill them or further his agenda to finally kill jacob so he can escape. Its essentially a similar way to how nearly every superhero/villian is born, in this case a villain.
@itspeejay I dunno because how can it be the man in black? Dave is not real and the mib can only take the form of dead people, but Dave was never real nor dead? Do you get what I mean
@buffy21033 Yeah i get what you mean, but he didnt just take the forms of dead people though as walt wasnt dead and he took his form, plus he could form as animals and insects and manipulate peoples dreams etc It seems likely that Dave was the mib as he tryed to kill hurley like he did when he was christian with jack where he nearly led jack off the cliff.
@itspeejay The creators said that the smoke monster can transform into people who are dead on the island, but I think it can also cause hallucinations like the island does, either that or Dave's corpse is buried somewhere on the island. I'm not sure what to think of it all really.
@itspeejay It could be just a replication. Your theory doesn't explain why his real dead body is laying in the woods when Jacob finds it. It makes more sense that the smoke monster took on the identity and form of MIB and his consciousness than it really be MIB.
@R3ST0N Its because mother made it so they couldnt kill each other, so when he's thrown into the source his spirit/consciousness is seperated from his body. It is the man in black as jacob mentions that its his brother quite a few times and the man in black mentions that he took his body and his humanity away from him.
@Felix770 Haha, that isn't the reason. The black smoke is a physical manifestation of dark energy, he fell into a pool of water that is powered by an electromagnetic light, what we see as the smoke monster is a force of negative energy from the island. It's not just cause of his shirt :P
@Felix770 True, he isn't exactly the most worst person in history, he even displays some noble traits now and then. But he is an embodiment of darkness, he murders people without remorse if they stand in his way and he is able to bring out the evil in others like Claire and Sayid. In my opinion he is evil, but he was good when he was human.

So, if that guy whose name we don't know became the monster, what the hell's up with his dead body?

@itspeejay dave is only hurley's imagination, cos he was never real, therefore can't be dead
buffy21033 1 year ago
@buffy21033 I didnt claim dave was dead just that it was the man in black trying to get hurley to kill himself.

Watching this scene, and the one where Jacob dunks Richard in the ocean, I always think of Basil Fawlty pushing Manuel around LOL :)

When I first ever watched this, I didn't actually realise that he fell down a waterfall. It looked like he just vanished.
