  • We used old hay again this year, no weed and great results! Up to 6 enclosed (boxed in with pine boards) 16 X 4 hay boxes for next year! Terrific crop of squash, taters, zukes, OMG tomatoes!!!!, cukes and KALE! Not so much luck with peppers though....oh well. This is definitely the way to go if you have rocky dirt!

  • You should have told your wife: "No, you are ha ha ha!"

  • Did it with OLD hay, no weeds at all. Suggestions: separate different plants in different rows, if you can. Our squash ran all over our peppers. I will use more "compost" next year, separate rows and use tall plant markers at the spot they were put into the bale. We have late planting here, but will try a few plants earlier next year using caution due to possible frost. We're just getting cukes and zukes now...about 12 squash coming along! No weeds, no bending...my kind of garden!

  • The best straw is rice straw. That is all I use, no weed seeds. And if there are any weed seeds they are from aquatic plants and won't survive in a garden.

  • Fantastic idea and video! I watched these a year ago and then tried it, with great results! I posted some videos on doing it organically (without any artificial/chemical fertilizers). Worked great! THANK YOU for this great idea!

  • Totally understandable! Thank you. I look forward to your compost video. I am starting my urban homesteading project this week - a dream come true.
