Awesome video! I've seen #4012 up close at Steamtown National Historic Site, and it was EPIC!! I'm such a railroad nut, I even have a pin with "Union Pacific 4012" on the front, the Pentrex "Big Boy Collection" on DVD, and a marble mini sculpture of that marvelous giant!!
@bluesguitardude That was a C&O H-8 2-6-6-6 Allegheny, It was in some aspects larger than the 4-8-8-4's. For example it was capable of 7500hp at 40mph, compared to the 4-8-8-4's max of 6200hp. The engine was also 3-6 thousand pounds heavier, but the total weight when combined with the tender was a few hundred tousand less. Sadly only 2 of this class was preserved.
This is just one thing I don't get. I think the Big Boy was only the heaviest or longest in service. To be THE biggest, it would have to be tallest, longest, bigger boiler and firebox, and heaviest.
i think the alligani was taller because they said to get the tender to fit on a chesipeack and ohio trun table they had to rase the hight of the tender. and raise the locomotive hight as well.
WMG = We're Mostly Gay. What was the audio track they felt so butt-hurt over?

I wish someone would do something with the Big Boy at Dallas Fair Park before its too late and she's too far gone to save. She may already be lost.

Awesome but it is not the biggest engine in the World the Triplex is the biggest it is a 4-6-6-6-2 But the Big boy is only a 4-8-8-4.

Was is the biggest to go into service?
DeltaPhi79 2 years ago
I Don't know if the triplex ever went into service but there were plans to build one so basically the big boy is the biggest
