This should have been on ESPN. It should have got more media attention. I ended up watching this on the internet on a TV station from Germany. I hope American Football continues to grow worldwide. I'm an American but I'm also a fan of the CFL in addition to the NFL and the college game. I watched the Grey Cup this year on ESPN3. Good turnaround season by the BC Lions after starting 1-6. I was really bummed a few years ago when NFL Europa folded. I guess I'm just a football junkie in all forms.
THIS SHOULD BE ON ESPN, i don't care who wins i just love american football being played around the world, hoping it gets bigger and bigger every year!
Ok. Using that logic, lets not allow Michael Phelps to swim again.
Why don't you ask the players from those non-North American nations? They ALL want to play at the highest level and that means against Americans.
You could also argue that countries such as USA should not enter the soccer World Cup because they can't win it and shouldn't be wasting the top teams' time.
@FurlogTheGiant That's like telling Spain, Brazil, etc. not to play in the FIFA world cup. How is a national team going to get better if they can't play against the best in the world?
The only way they will ever be anywhere near the US is to put Gridiron into their school systems. Gridiron requires a lot of infrastructure. And considering the lack of popularity, complexity of the game, size of the teams, number of coaches needed, cost of gear and the cost of insurance...it's not going to ever happen. JMO
You have a point there, but don't forget that it was the same with basketball 50 years ago when Americans used to send college teams to play as USA national team and they would beat everyone easily. But today, you have to send your NBA stars to play and you still can't guarantee they will beat every other nation. I hope it will be the same with football someday.
If anyone researched this tournament they would of found out that our closest game was against Mexico....We only won 17-7....Our team right now mostly consists of former division 2 and 3 players but there were a lot more Div 1 players than the last tournament.....this was also the first international tournament for Canada....I bet by the next one all the North american teams will step their game up only helping the rest of the world step their game up as well... this is only good for the sport!
Dont gt me wrong hear i am a huge fan of american football, i like it better than cfl, but i am still a patriotic Canadian. But to be honest, if america didn't win i would be worried about you guys, you have over three hundred million people in you country, canada has 30 million. So you guys have way more kids to choose from. You guys poor way more money into your football than canada. So no kidding you guys won. The fact that we can actually play a decent game against you guys is impressive.
@SouthB111 I absolutely agree with you on this. It's exactly how I feel about the US trying to play soccer. Just the fact that we qualify for the World Cup is impressive to me. Yes, we (USA) have 300+ million people here, but at the same time, we have A LOT more sports to choose from. Competing against countries like Brazil, Spain, Argentina... Those countries play soccer and basketball, that's pretty much it. Now look at the US. We have football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, etc....
@mzerv00 So our athletes are a lot more spread out within other sports. Football is probably the most popular sport here. So I give Canada credit for competing with us. I hope the game continues to grow in Canada and the rest of the world.
@mzerv00 continue to grow ? :p football has been played in Canada for just as long as it has in the USA, something called the CFL where weve played 99 Grey Cups, as opposed to just 48 superbowls...
@zackhoward18 Thanks for that bit of info! I guess what I meant was, that I hope the game continues to grow in TALENT in CANADA and the rest of the world. :))
@zackhoward18 Football in Canada is growing. Sure we've had the CFL forver, but now youre seeing high schools with 5 or 6 coaches, videotaping each game...summer practices instead of just showing up after labour day...also they're alot more coaching camps that kids can attend.....we used to have 1 or 2 kids go to the NCAA, now alot of NCAA top 20-30 teams have Canadians on them
why would the other countries even bother playing if its american football i mean its right in the name at least canada should of tried to use the rules of the cfl to have a better chance
why? because there are american football fans all over the globe, and i think it's nice to have such an event where everyone can come together and show some skills. and yeah, the US-team ripped the otheres apart, but it was nice to watch ;]
other countries might not be good, but they put in their hearts, and try their best,...and the most important aspect of course, is having fun XD
Now I'm from America, and even I think this is a little messed up. We take a game, put some pads on and change the rules & regulations, play it for years, some other countries play it, and we play against them. On top of that, after winning the Gold we play "we are the Champions". Dafuck 'Merica. Dafuck,
@OfficialBaconScape How condescending of you. Your tone implies that America had no chance of losing. It's not like 150 years of experience add up for each generation, all the nation's players probably started playing in highschool and had the same amount of blood sweat and tears on the line.
@rickard1972r lets stop this shit its football its not like we are talkin about something like the holicost or some shit. yeah vancouver might go fuckn nuts over a loss and im sure toronto would too or maybe ottawa but probably not, anyway, and america is obviously better at football, but tht doesnt mean canada cant enjoy the sport, we arent even talkin about football any more. backin down from an argument classic canadien EH

@schapadap I can see where you're coming from. However, I'm sure the organization hosting this event wanted to add an air of legitimacy to it. If the FIFA World Cup didn't allow Spain, Brazil or Germany to play because they were "too good" wouldn't you agree that it would take something away from the competition?
@Dresd The difference between this and fifa is spain, brazil, Germany and many other teams are on a reasonably equal footing. In American football its not even close... Its got "American" right in its name. Stoping the US from playing in this tournament is not like keeping Spain from playing in the world cup. its like FIFA not allowing the Spanish Senior National team to play in the Under 20 tournament.
@jackhandy00 I definitely agree with you there's a wide gulf in skill between the nations right now. It's just that I feel that ignoring that gap won't do anyone any favors. Showing everyone the level of play they *could* achieve should motivate them to try and reach that goal.
me as a canadian dont care if we lost the gold medal cuz first of all at least qualifying for the gold medal is good enough for me and we woop amaerican ass every year for hockey, we gotta let you win something
Sure, you don't care now because you didn't win. Only losers are content with just qualifying. You whoop our asses every year in hockey? When was the last time the Stanley Cup trophy crossed your border?
And you got to let us win at something? LMAO! Not only we beat you in football but also in baseball and olympic basketball in Beijing 08 (and wasn't a Canadian who invented that game, by the ways?)
U.S needs to put in more stringent standards on our team if we want to make this game global. make it no D-1 players at all? I dont like to see us absolutely smash on teams when we are trying to grow the sport.
