I am a big fan of one hander and its the most beautiful to watch but not the most effective. See what nadal has done to federer. I have a single handed one too and I have been exploited many times by other players by just throwing a high backhand which can only be sliced or returned back with no juice on it. Well what I can do does not matter in front of these players but still, If I have a kid to train, I will train him for double hander.
Love the way these guys hit the ball nicely out in front of their bodies. They never seem rushed or late at the contact point. As an amatuer hacker tennis player, I constantly hit my one-handed backhand late. Guess that's one of the many reasons I'm not on the ATP Tour!
Other pro's with a one handed backhand: Feliciano Lopez, Garcia Lopez, Blake, Ljubicic, Karlovic, Golubev, Dimitrov, Huta Galung, Thomas Schoorel, Eric Prodon....any more?
I agree with all your comments. I dont know the reason why so few up coming players use the one hander. I find the one hander, by far, the most beautifull shot in tennis. Nicolas almagro , philipp kohlshreiber, tommy robredo and the others mentionned all have awesome backhands. Check out andrey golubevs backhand, he generates a lot of pace but its mostly very unpredictable and he often takes it on the rise sticking close to the baseline.
@storm22tpt Yes, I too love Golubev's backhand! It's too bad he's having an off year after the one he had last year. I hope things get better and we start seeing him again in later rounds of tournaments.
do you not think that 2 handed bh is a better choice for the modern game? ohbh may be the most beautiful (i agree) but at times, i would swap to a two handed backhand in certain situations, if i could.
@warrenvazquez No way. Ill always preach for the 1 hander. And I honestly think the 1 hander is the BEST choice for the modern game. The reason why so few players nowadays use the 1 hander is mainly because of the transition from 2 hander to one hander. you will lose matches until you are comfortable. I guess not many young players want to steer away from their comfort zone. 1 hander=power control variety and it sets you apart from the rest of the band wagon.
@claus1225 I agree with you 100%. I'm rooting for Grigor Dimitrov's continued success for that reason. There are also a few upcoming juniors with one handers, I believe.
Federer is easily the most elegant. Whether his backhand is as strong as the others is a different matter. But Federer is easily the most elegant. His movement around the court is smoother as well.
@10JNO10 I know I missed a lot of folks, but these were just the ones I was able to catch when I went to the US Open last year. I'll definitely try to catch the other ones this year!
Almagro has the most pace on his backhand, Federer can crank up the speed when he wants to and its huge! and fed can also do anything with his backhand like hit a banana of a single handed backhand who else is able to do that?
@shabalabading42 I used to think that Gasquet's was the best—and it still delivers the most gasp-inducing winners, but having seen Wawrinka's up close, it's definitely up there! The amount of spin and power he generates is amazing.
@PhilippedeHerte Sigh. Alas, I'm afraid you are correct. I still watch his match against Federer in Monte Carlo in 2005 and wonder what might have been.
@jjbnyc1 All those Federer, Nadal, Djokovic...they can't amaze me as Gasquet do. If he's feeling good on the court, he can do everything. He is THE shotmaker.
Just wait for him. I'm sure, he'll be back at the top very soon. And I hope he'll finally show people who always drag him down, what an amazing player he is. One of the best, obviously.
@hattrickster33 A little bit. I think that has something to do with the fact that he started off with a two-hander. I remember years ago when he started he played with this (equally weird) two-handed backhand where he would let go with his left hand during the follow-through (almost like a Borg backhand). You can see on some backhands now that he still sort of does it, especially during the warm up.
@foul01 Unfortunately, Karlovic didn't play this year's US Open because of injury and Ljubicic already lost (to Ryan Harrison) by the time I got to tournament, so I totally missed him. I love Gasquet's backhand so much, but it becomes a problem when your forehand isn't half as effective. . .

when everybody says federer, gonzalez, blake, etc its because their forehands are better than their backhands

you have to watch almagro backhand winner or almagro backhand and you can see how efficience its his shoot

Wawrinka and Gasquet both generate the most pace. Gasquet has a bigger loop in his swing, which makes it difficult to take the ball early.
Timberlakefan 1 year ago 2
@Timberlakefan Great observation! I remember observing that often Gasquet will actually take a big step BACK to return on his backhand side.
