The romance genre of this time did not dictate "a romance" in the sense of the love. Romance at this time meant ballad (referring to the structure of the poem) and/or that it was a story of an individual (in opposition the epic which is the story of a people or a nation)

Romance doesn't necessarily have to do with Love and courtship always. Something could be romantic simply because it is nostalgic and adventurous.
