The mistake made by GM for the Pontiac Grand Am was the transmission. The Ram Air v6 was a great set up and a reliable engine, regardless of the fact that it only has 150 hp. If they could place a little bit tighter gear rations in for 1st, 2nd, and 4th to bump up the acceleration a little, the car would be more fun!
Grand Am's are nice cars. Haters gonna hate bro. Nice car. I love screwing with people in mine. I have a 2003 Grand Am GT. 175 hp and like 210 lbs of torque. Those engines are awesome. The tranny should be different but no big deal. GM's third gear in those automatic transmissions SUCKED MASSIVELY.

from about 73-mid to late 90's cars were heavily regulated for emissions.

why would you use the h22 as an example? with vtec any honda engine makes 100hp per liter, stock, aside from the h22. i could put a car together for under 5k that is more reliable than any gm ever made, get 30 mpg and run a 12 sec quarter mile and handle better than anything ever made in america

from about 73-mid to late 90's cars were heavily regulated for emissions.
V8's in the 60's up until around 73 had awesome power, the problem was putting it to the ground. matter of fact most V8's were underrated from the factory.
mustangs from the early 90's were a joke. i mean yeah there was some good running cars in between 73 and and the mid 90's, but not many.
although what they can do with 4 cylinders today is impressive. i'm not going to lie about that
