  • By the way, what is that Date Masamune armor all about?

  • @Exorcistkanda there is or was a store in my neighborhood that sold Miyagi products and during the opening week they let visitors try on the suit so I did and filmed it

  • @RoninDave Damn you people! Living in Japan, damn the economy!

  • @RoninDave Nice touch ^_^

  • @RoninDave You know, I find it funny that even as dragon2060 rather rudely replied to your response, he was still making many grammatical and spelling mistakes, and that he would post a comment in the first place if he didn't actually care about Japanese history.

  • Yawwn

  • Bushido had nothing to do with combat. Bushido was how a warrior held himself when not in combat. My personal faith is Bushido and follow it strictly day in and out. It is amazing how "reality" vs "saw on tv" differs. I will only say that today there are many good men forced to do terrible things by their governments. One item that kept Bushido in line is the belief in an afterlife and honor to your relatives. These items are rare today....mainly because Christianity and its flaws

  • @Chicagotarsier and my 4 year history degree is telling me ur a kid that's watched too many movies if u think fighting is like rock paper scissors i just wasted my time trying to explain it too u all over the world a spear wall with bowmen behind was the most effective army made from the 2 most effective weapons of the day spear and bow

  • As with all combat each weapon had its purpose. It is like rock paper scissors. Calvary bested foot soldiers except for pike and spear. Pike and spear bested calvary but weak to archers and katana. This is why the Japanese stopped using pike and spear for calvary and manufactured BAS ( BIG ASS SWORDS) as their calvary defense. These swords were 6 foot long and took multiple people to utilize.

Of course the rule "it only counts if someone is looking" applied to poison and backstabbing.

  • @Chicagotarsier lol ur an idiot the spear is the most effective hand-to-hand weapon spear>katana the katana was a status symbol weapon and wasn't used often

i really would love to see samurai charge into a spear wall with katan's well actually i wouldn't it would be a slaughter

even 1v1 combat was done with knives not Katana's the late 16th and1 7th centuries was when Katana's where used because the samurai declined from power it was a symbol guns were more effective and they knew it

  • I am a student of a Japanese spear school (Owari Kan Ryu). In this video, but not all are correct Japanese Sojutu. Don't forget that these are "festivals". And enjoy this video to interfere.

  • What a joke

  • Batty boys, the whole lot of them.

  • This is a show. If you want to see a real samurai fighting method, see Tenshin Shoden Katori Shintou-ryu video. They are well trained.

  • Why are they deflecting each other spears in the air? Is this just for demonstration purposses to avoid stinging each other? I know very little of martial arts, but atacking from that high with a spear looks really strange.

    Perhaps someone can explain this?

  • man martial arts and shit

  • making a pike fighting about a weapon who was mainly used in Europe...how fucking interesting...

  • Hey RoninDave, keep up the good work.

  • you know i saw the opening in the video and though oh great not another idiot who thinks he knows about japan... and then i started reading the comments. i retract my original assessment about you.

  • 3:30 Reminded me of this for some reason "Wars are to be won with swords and spears, not with rice and salt.", I don't know why, but I love that quote. =)

  • @dragon2060 learn some history (and spelling) before calling anything dumb. The samurai's chief weapon in their early days was the bow later spears became a main weapon on the battlefield for samurai and ashigaru foot soldiers. And Japanese mythology states that Japan was created by a jeweled heavenly spear

  • @dragon2060 is there a point buried in your babble?

  • @RoninDave you need a IQ over 100 to get it sorry . . lol jk yes the point is why the fuck are we bitching about some fucking myth in its time and some of the shit we think we know we don't like there saying that vikings didn't have the dragon boats and the horns on there helmet it all messed up lol

  • @RoninDave "in Google it says katana"... Really, I mean, really? =_=

Dave, don't waste energy with him. He is a lost case.

By the way, I just subscribed, looking forward to great new videos! ;)

  • @extragunbon just so you know i was trolling and it worked i know about the spear everything about that i just like fucking with people

  • @RoninDave I don't know what the other guy was talking about but I found it pretty funny XD probably not a very fluent English speaker from the looks of it.

  • @RoninDave Hah! That dragon is trolling. Everybody know that the Japanese footsoldiers in ancient time uses the yari as their main weapon as it is more efficient in war, with the exception of Suzuki Magoichi who is known for arming his troops with arquebuses. The Samurais who prefer to use Katana are the likes of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro who are Kenseis. Proof, Saito Musashibo Benkei's body was riddled with spear when he died standing.

  • @dragon2060 Your ignorance is truly offensive, as is your disrespect of foreign culture. I agree with RoninDave, in that you should at least look into a subject before you decide to criticize it. Further, your insult to the Japanese creation belief is akin to walking into a church, pointing at the crucifix and shouting "You don't honestly believe this fucker existed do you?" I can't tell if you're trolling, or just that stupid. P.S. Google said your mom's a slut, so I guess its true.

  • @wooki33man ya its mostly just trolling lol that and i would walk in to a church and do that im not a fan of religion and i rip on everyone's culture i love japan there mostly hard working people that are more advanced then my culture im just saying wen your fighting over the web about a myth then you need to get back to real life it was not made from a spear and if you get pissed about some one saying it isnt then you need help not meaning to disrespected

  • @dragon2060 Good. Now that we have that cleared up, I would just like to say that I meant you no disrespect, and wish you good day sir.

  • @wooki33man good day to you two friend

  • samurai use almost anything not just katana. if they are fighting against cavalry they use spears. if they fight on ground with other ashigaru peasant soldiers they prolly use katana. they use bows if they are on a hill/wall their enemy is far and down. if they are further up on a slope they use cavalry to charge down their troops. cavalry works on open field too just not in the woods and spear wielding ashigaru and yari/naginata samurai. learn ur strategy and talk about war later.

  • @Myoldnamesdontwork um thanks for the info captain obvious i know this as i said if you read it not skim it i said main weapon not only and if you read more of the comments i said i was trolling lol and i know about the yumi and every think ells i love the samurai's idea of life and honor

  • @dragon2060 You google something and get a result so therefor the video is bs? That is some stupendous idiocy. These people are Japanese themselves. I think they know the truth about their own history.

  • @tarrker what is so hard with reading the hole god damn convo i mean really i have already said i am just trolling i am just fucking around and i have no clue what it says on google i never used it i was trolling the hole time

  • @dragon2060

The romantic image of the samurai was largely fabricated during the early twentieth century. In actual history, bushido tended to take very practical forms, centered around the credulous glorification of one's feudal lord and the maintenance of empire: lick upwards, kick downwards, and stab from behind only when you're sure that no one is looking.

The sword has the greatest cultural tradition, but it was never widely used for mass combat, to which it is singularly unsuited.

  • @dragon2060 The main weapon of the first samurai wasn´t the sword. It was the bow. And the katana was one of the "newest" weapons, before the Katana there were many many other types of swords...

  • @The95Genni man you need to read the whole thing before commenting on something i have already be over this 5 or 6 times i was just fucking trolling with people and man it worked lol

  • @RoninDave Definately, weren't amurai early tax collectors with a special bow for riding horse back?

And besides a spear is a great weapon to bring down a samurai on horseback by some peasant who may have been in combat before. Stab that horse, watch it fall and finish the job with the samurai underneath the horses body. Screw that fancy lifelong training, lets use tactics.

  • @RoninDave You are correct I looked it up and the Spear was the main weapon for battle, swords were a noble warrior class. there is allot of websites out there and each is different I think I would try to find out from the main source of origin before someone comments you on history.

  • @dragon2060

WOW. Both of you guys fail at the english language. For fuck sake could you please have a decent conversation about the subject of the vidio instead of dick measuring.

  • @Medusworks i don't know can you go with out failing at the English language yourself you say we fail at it yet you spell video with a i and you have no clue what your talking about we are not dick measuring and if you could read you would see that we have already cleared everything up so shut up man no one cares what your need to fight is don't try and start shit

  • @dragon2060 ur miss the b in dumb lol ur a troll also just accept if som1 tell the true..hard?

  • @isisrufus what the hell are you talking about "ur(your) miss(missing) b in dumb lol ur(your) a troll also just accept if som1(some one) tell(s) the true(truth) hard" one do not reply to a comment about spelling if you cant spell for shit i know i am not the best but dam and two what the hell does that mean good job on spelling dumb because i think that was the only thing you spelled right in that hole thing and i have no clue what your trying to stay at the end what truth?

  • @dragon2060 i knew u a troll thats what u do on youtube

  • @isisrufus na i just troll when im bored

  • @dragon2060 The spear actually was the main weapon in japan and almost every other country "even the Vikings used them even though most people think they used battleaxes...which was rare" before the gun due to the ease of use, range, cost, and efficiency. A man with a sword against an equally skilled and of the same stature wielding a spear would not be able to close the range and would have little chance of winning unless he was lucky and the spear-man tripped lol...

  • @CaptainRetardify yeah... the spartans primary weapon was the spear

  • @dragon2060 you schould learn something. the katana was already found in the early 16th. before the yari ( spear) and the naginata ( swordlance ) were used on the battlefield. the tachi ( warsword ) was only take by cavalery or in loss of the main weapon. the katana was used in a time of freedom after the battle of sekigahara.

learn something about japanese history of war... the katana was named the soul of the samurai first in the "hagakure" and the " bushido " both book of the 19 century -.-

  • @dragon2060 Sooo.... you don't care about the actual facts of Japanese history and mythology, and you'd much rather use 'I'm feeling lucky' as your main source for information? Oh boy... I don't think there's much hope for you. Please never bring that attitude to a JMA dojo :)

  • @sanke00001 i dont know if i already said to you but as i have said before and before again im just trolling i know the facts of Japanese history not so much on mythology but nun the less i was just joking man and "I'm feeling lucky" what?

  • @dragon2060 Try looking on the front page of google. Doesn't really work anymore, but my point stands... And honestly, "I was just trolling, it's cool guys"? Really? You've demonstrated an absolute lack of knowlege or maturity in an area where both are kinda needed to be taken seriously. So if you want to go around trolling, have fun with that, but don't expect to ever get anywhere, mate.

  • @sanke00001 when diid i say its cool guys i dont think trolling is cool i just like doing it same with smoking with most people its not cool its just something they want to do its a bad thing but still i like it meh

  • @RoninDave Hi there, nice video, are you currently living in Japan, or is this from a trip of yours? I would like to note that this is most likely not actual combative spearmanship, there are far too many inaccuracies in the demonstration, it raises alot of red flags for me. However, If it is, I'd love to know which system it stems from, and if there are any other videos of them around. I'm a long way from an expert of these matters, but after observing many systems, this just doesn't fit.

  • your wrong by the ay its said jaoan was created by a sword not a spear.

  • @Immortal4Aday sorry but that is correct. The earliest histories of Japan, Kojiki and Nihonshoki, both say Japan was created by a spear not a sword. Last Samurai was wrong. FYI the first samurai called their profession the Way of the Horse and Bow, the bow being their chief weapon. The sword really didn't become this mystical weapon until much later

  • @RoninDave really huh i didn't know that, thanks for that, i actually learnt, something here thank you.

  • @RoninDave no mention of the Naginata? I see everyone talking about the Katana and Spear but I would have thought the Naginata was the most effective weapon used by the Samurai class apart from the bow, similar to the spear but could beat a spear easily because it could also be used to cut the shaft in 2. A Naginata had more leverage and could easily cleave a man from head to toe.

  • @ZelatorUK naginata are cool but slow compared to the quick thrust of a spear. Naginata were often the weapons used by the sohei, fighting Buddhist monks, and the women of a samurai household

  • looks like a cool video, but the begining made me so confused my head almost imploded in on itself, causing a nucelar holocaust of world domination.

  • it looks quite highly choreographed and formal, yet so surprisingly ineffective. Granted this is just play, not like they were doing anything legit. Nice footage from plays and demonstrations though, some work was put into this I guess.

  • this anit proper yari fighting all there're doing is hitting the wood of yari together and spinning around

  • lol.... thats a stupid way to fight didnt think it was possible ... i dk if it is for the demonstration but sooooo slow and the blade at the end is rly small the chambara style looks better :D faster moves i like it

  • u look like masamune date o.o

  • LOL XD Wow you really can't handle it when the shit is dished back to you can you...

  • @ryu8888 well what you are serving certainly is shit as it has nothing to with the vid nor is it in the slightest bit funny or witty. You're just a garden variety troll - boring, repetitive, stupid, immature, and so on. Until you decide to grow up little troll, I say goodbye

  • Comment removed

  • hey dave, thanks for the answer on yahoo, you gave the only answer that gave me what i was searching for, other guy just hit a bunch of keys, and i like the masamune outfit in the beginning.

  • Japanese ninja to Twitter

    ttp://twitter.com/#!/Ninja_apprentic

  • 0:21 ????????????

  • beauiltful story about how the Japan was create! btw that armour look like Date Masamune armour ( i think!)

  • Can anyone tell me what the masks at 0:28 are called?

  • @gaxxag the masks are Namahage - they're devils from Akita who punish lazy children. I made a video of of them here - v=R9Gy9mKZDfE

  • Japan is so sick of white people.

  • @colonforsecs thank you for your brilliant contribution that has nothing whatsoever to do with Japanese spear-fighting. You make your parents proud that they spewed you from your mother's mother womb before leaving you in a gutter

  • @colonforsecs you mother should have swallowed you

  • 2:58 even in Japan babies interrupt adults at play. *laughs*

  • I want to be a ninja yet I understand nothing.so sad.

  • Love the clanging noises the spears make when they meet, reminding me a little of hyoushigi.

    Nice one, RoninDave.

  • I still can't do that spinny trick at 4:22 with the spear. I don't know how it's done.

  • The spear always gets a bum rap in movies. It was the most used and usually most feared weapon of all pre modern battlefields. A good spear man was an awesome fighter.

  • this is actually a really good video. most of the time, people spend too much time talking about the sword. but it is the spear that the samurai used first on the battlefield. the spear is generally underrated, but anybody who has ever learned and actually trained in proper spear forms, will know its not easy at all.

  • last time i went to Japan i was refused entry into a brothel because they said my dick was too big .....i felt both good and bad at the same time - AND NOW I DUNNO WHAT FACE TO PULL !!!!!! -_-

  • Didn't know a Dick was the samurai's last spear resort.....

  • The guy at the beginning would look a lot more impressive if he wasn't wearing khaki shorts with his spiked red and black samurai armor....

  • WTF? THEY HAVE PEENUS FESTIVALS? WTFWTFWTF. LMFAO. GO JAPAN. even though thats a bit disturbing... anyone care to help explain what exactly they celebrate about it and why? and even possibily the history behind it lmfao.

  • i always thought that it was a sword that was dipped into the sea and formed the islands of japan

  • @shinbudoka nah, that was just in Last Samurai. Both of Japan's earliest texts the Nihonshoki and Kojiki say it was a jeweled spear of heaven

  • @shinbudoka Nah spear. Though you might find more then one version of the myth.

  • The armor and the eye patch reminds me of Masamune Date from samurai warriors

  • run away flying penis at 0.21

  • ninjutsu ?

  • What hapend to stab the shit out of anader?

  • This is a show.

Please do true soujyutu in UP.

  • hi Dave,

for what the reason do they hit the tips of the spears against each other way above their heads?

  • what is the reason in the spear vs spear that they hit the tips of the spears against eachother way above their heads?

  • 0:21 i cannot describe in words how awesome and random Japanese people can be :D

  • Worship the almighty dildo! WTF?

  • ok, seriously, who else besides me expected that guy to open up with "ARE YOU READY GUYZ?"

  • @Superhrnet01 Ha! So did I!

    PSYCHE UP GUYZ!

    PUT YOUR GUNZ ON!

  • man wie heisst das wo die mit der stange irgendwie um die fingern drehen ? ich suche die ganze zeit aber ich finds nicht -.-

    peace

  • Hmmm.... Qiang Shu seems a lot quicker and more mobile than Sojutsu. I bet someone who knew Wudang Zi Wu Suo Hou Spear or Shaolin Spear could easily surpass those japanese guys. Or, I'm wrong and this video doesn't present even half of Sojutsu's potential. No offense for Japan.

  • DIck

  • 0:21 was that a hude dic-k ?

  • Yes they have penis festivals in Japan

  • @Ieatbabyseals please explain

  • haha penis festival i actually saw that one on tv...there were like a bunch of men wearing thong and take off their thorn all together or something...i think japan is like the weirdest country on earth. they are the most extreme people. they commit sucide. kamekaze. the most perverted people.

  • yes, and you can say dick on youtube.

  • @skypicy

lol you know your dicks ha

  • lol

  • Really, I thought they were really pissed at each other, got their armor out and decided to fight. Of course it's rehearsed you idiot.

  • lol! I like your theory!

  • Never could a more appropriate response be made. :)

  • well they could of made it look a little more real........................I prolly would have been a better show

  • i agree cud have been more choreographed to for the entertainment of it

  • AWESOME. Another Piece of History in the Making Being Preserved. COOL GOTTA LOVE HISTORY. COOL

  • lame

  • No kidding. If I have a spear and my opponent has a spear and he runs at me with it straight up in the air then the pointy end of mine will be thrust into his torso.

  • I don't really know much about sojustu but even so, these all looked so fake, so badly fake that i don't think they could be real deal.

  • hahahaha the giant dick float x]]]

  • i dont liek it when white poepel try and learn the arts for abusing

  • but its ok for yellow, black, or red people? wtf? lol

  • I dont like it when people abuse the English Language. Pick up a dictionary

  • hahahaahahahahahahhaa... lol 0:22

  • the spear vs spear wasn't very impressive in particular :/

  • Hah, Nice Masamune Date outfit

  • I have a Date Masamune Armor mini collection, check it in my channel!

  • GET YOUR GUNS ON!

  • SHOCK UP GUYS!

  • thanks for the video. I prefer halberds (naginata) and kenjutsu but sojutsu is interesting.

  • Being a fan of the spear myself, I favor this and add you to my list of Subscriptions, RoninDave.

  • have you guys ever try fighting a spearman and you having a sword it is very diffucult it gets even harder if that person is well trained go do it and you will see what im talking about

  • This seems only a show.

    not a toraditional Sojutsu

  • I am not sure if you meant islands of Asia as japan.

But japan was said to be made from a sword. drops that dripped off the blade and became the islands of japan.

  • there is a reason for the spear being the most used weapon as well as seeming to be the most effective weapon.

Main reason is the simple use of the spear thrust and given the length of it even a no skilled hack can effectively wield it on the battlefield.

Dont get me wrong though i like the spear i prefer claws but yes anyone can use a spear especially in numbers.

but it takes skill to wield a sword or claws or anything else that put you in your opponents face.

  • though i am not saying it takes no skill to wield a spear but certainly less then a that of a close ranged or flexible weapon.

There are people of all caliber though that master these certain weapons if one can actually master a spear Todakatsu is a good example then yes the things i imagine he did took a lot of skill.

...Then again Little of what i say can be considered ,except the part about the spear taking the least amount of skill to use effectively. Everything else yeah that's my opinion.

  • 4:23 that guy started getting sick w/ it.

alot of interesting facts here. spears have always been my favorite weapons (and bo staffs) not that i kno how to use them but i like the style of fighting for them neway

  • so are you born to fight i thought you were from sweden not the midwest united states

  • what's wrong with the united states? idiot

  • i never said their was anything wrong with the united states IDIOT but i guess your little mind can't comprehend the simple words i used in that sentence

  • You inferred that people from the midwest united states are violent. Maybe you never learned how to realize when you infer something. IDIOT

  • oh and i live in the midwest united states i am not saying that all of it is violent i am just pointing out that their are some environments inside of it that are violent. Oh and uh just so that if you reply and try and change my look at things and degrade me you better find out that you are nothing to me

  • hahahahahahahahahahaha!

  • @teamshintaichi you fckin retarded as wannabe what a geek

  • @wadawut I wanna b wut? Maybe one day I can be as great as you... hahahahahahahaa You.......Great......HaHaHaHaHaHaHa. That's pretty damn funny. This argument took place such a long time ago. Do you really have nothing better to do?YOU are the wanna be. You wanna be like someone with a life. Why don't you just go get one?

  • Comment removed

  • it's a festival in kawasaki

  • no problem happy to apply

  • and im not talkin bout u dave

  • thank you for clarifying the obvious

  • Trust me u dont wanna fight this guy...

his technique is beyond compare i lost the first 3 secs i was like WTF!!! xD

  • Dave, plz learn japanese history a bit better, cos it doesnt say that japan was made by a spear, it says it was made by a sword. and btw i train with a Yoshihara katana since 5 yrs on my own ( without any sensei or dojo ) and trust me, if we had a fight in real then i would own u =)

  • uh, yeah... the last samurai is not a reliable source of history, kid. The oldest mytho-historical texts - the Kojiki and the Nihonshoki both mention that it was a spear that the gods used to create Japan.

Oh, and goody gum drops that you trained with a sword - nobody fights with them anymore. I'd just shoot your crazy sword-wielding ass if you came within 20 feet of me.

  • hey noob, com to Voss in norway and meet me there; then i will show u who the kid is. but prepare to get ownd in max 3 seconds

  • Do you have a playstation 3, 360, or a Wii? I'm sure you've built up mad skills on them but I'm not impressed.

  • and 1 more thing Dave;

    a gun has no honor and no soul;

    a sword does though

  • yeah, you just keep thinking that, kid.

  • its only a fact, but a stupid noob like u dont kno nothing about the true way of he samurai, and thats why u just suck.

so com to my town here in norway and lets settle this, then u will find out what my sword can do to u. i gonna make som delicious Sushi out of ur corpse.

and btw, ur armor in the video sucks too, looks childish, u better get an original Edo era armor. cos with ur armor none will take u serious hahaha xD

  • kid, you really need to do some homework. Edo armor was inferior to the times before like the Sengoku Period because there were no more wars in the Edo Period and so armor became more ceremonial pieces.

    Stick with Nintendo, weirdo.

  • hey noob, i dont even play nintendo or any other gameconsoles, lol.

and i only said u should better get an Edo armor, not that that they were fighting armors.

learn to read right befor u answer stupid shit u freak

  • whatever, kid. Go back to your Dungeons&Dragons live-action roleplaying.

  • hey brotha i agree with you sorry ronindave but you are a fake nigga

  • whatever. you make no sense

  • easy mate it was obviously a joke, i see that you are interested in ancient japanese culture. indeed we do have something in common. so, many greetings from sweden.

  • I fight with a sword o.0 heh, but still S4mur... grow up

  • then try blocking that spear 0:21

  • 6:25

    No way to block that

  • you could crouch^^

  • Anyay, this is a very good, and somewhat informative video, thank you.

  • wtf is this thats not fighting

  • well, it's not a video game

  • guess you don't understand fighting.
