This song is about Jermaine... Jermaine being "polite" or rather trying to please Mr. Gordy in hopes of becoming a solo star. And now with the new A&E show we can all see how star hungry Jermaine really is. He left his brothers in a failed attempt to pursue a solo career. Michael was devasted when he left. I really related to this song and I think Jack is Mike. It was so hard for him to experience love because of the life they lead. Even the rest of them never had a real, life as children after stardom. Anywho knows? God bless us all and will lead us to paradise !

"He wants to be what he is not" (Plainly, he would love to have been the star of the group). This song is about Jermaine... Jermaine being "polite" or rather trying to please Mr. Gordy in hopes of becoming a solo star. And now with the new A&E show we can all see how star hungry Jermaine really is. He left his brothers in a failed attempt to pursue a solo career. Michael was devasted when he left. This was Michael's way of showing tuff love to Jermaine.

Very beautiful song! Michael said in "Moonwalk" in a roundabout way that the song is autobiographical. Based on what he has talked about in interviews. we all know that the "Jack" in the song is him. We miss you Mike!

Yeah, that makes sense. That very well could be the meaning behind the song. I still am sort of leaning more towards that it's about Michael, just like the opening of "Time Waits for no One" where he speaks of being sad and lonely, emotions he dealt with for years.

@Bronxlady1 I've learned in life that people are afraid of different when they can't relate to it, they misjudge people when they don't understand them, or they disapprove of something when they don't view it as normal.The point I'm making is that MJ was different, misunderstood, and definitley not of the norm as an entertainer,but more so as a human being! I fell in love with song the moment I heard it back in the 1978-79 when Destiny was released. Loved it then and love it now. I play it in my car everyday even before we lost Mike. I was there at the Triumph concert in 1982, Love him Love him Love him.
