@SiT1986 uhhh not disrespect but that is what Jazz is all about...classical music produces copycats with very few exceptions..jazz impresarios are permitted creative prose, virtuosity, and improvisation...that's Jazz...interpretation not exact remakes...their was divinely interpreted and true to each of their form...in terms of paying homage and stayin true to themselves I rate them very highly...may not be for everyone but again, that's what Jazz is ALL about...do it how you feel...just sayin
As a matter of fact,I love Nnenna's voice and respect her.But she didn't seem to know how to communicate well with students at Berklee at her vocal workshop. My friend went on stage to sing to Nnenna and to get feedback on her singing.Nnenna was as rude as a musician can be with another. She totally made her feel ashamed and uncomfortable on the stage. She is supposed to give USEFUL advice, not to embarrass young students. This is not the way to treat singers who admire you.
Diana is very competent at both vocals and piano. To say she's lucky to have a career is foolish. I don't know of any vocalists that use grace notes as well aside from maybe Ella. Very few instrumentalists are as good rhythmically. She can syncopate w/the best. She may not be Sarah Vaughan or Art Tatum but she's definitely highly-skilled and worthy of her success.
Carmen Lundy was a much better paring with Nnenna than this at the Ford Amphitheater...check out Carmen's classic concert clips...greatest living Jazz singer today!!!
Nnenna Freelon..sounds really good in this performance.. Diana Krall has had better days where vocals are concerned.. wonderful piano as usual.. we have those dayss.. I am still a big fan of diana Krall .. Girl Got it.. !!! Love them both
I will agree with you that playing the piano and singing...is a task.. but with Diana Krall.. Thats what she has been doing for the longest while.. I have heard her sing much more difficult songs and play at the same time.. so I really dont think its a matter of a playing / singing kind a problem !!
playing a thelonius monk's tune on piano alone is itself not easy to do. when you add that to singing a monk's composition, i can understand why diana is not as comfortable as singing the tunes she usually sings.
so let's not knock diana for taking on this challenging tune...both singing and playing monk. try playing monk yourself on any instrument, you'll understand. it's not like playing cocktail jazz for sure. thanks for the vid.
Yikes - that previous comment is harsh! I have worked with Nnenna Freelon and she has been nothing but lovely, gracious, and warm to not just myself, but to everyone she met when I was with her. I brought people to her shows and even when she was whipped she came out and greeted every single person. So, I don't know where something so opposite is coming from.
Maybe sheryl crow(maybe SC's sweet but she sure can't sing) is as deep as should go, hon. I truly think Neenna is too deep for you, you'll just get confused.. Maybe you can go calm yourself down with the Donald Trump clip you saved. Heavy!
"The great Nnenna Freelon" is one of the rudest, most egotistical people I have ever had the unpleasure of knowing. An excellent voice is worthless if the person is intolerable. A sad state of affairs for the out-of-control ego in the performance arts in America. Truly sad; what a waste.
GET LOST! NOTHIN IS ALL GOOD or BAD,CRYBABYCATHERINETODD! Even if she were a horrid person (which we now realize is your highly OVERSENSITIVE imagination) she would still be great, for the contribution she's made to the field of jazz.
Im sorry but Diana just does not make it vocally well on this one. The piano playing however is great and it is worth watching for the great Nnenna Freelon.

I love Diana Krall, but she must not be able to hear herself here, because she's out of tune on virtually the entire tune.

i swear it is very difficult to play
piano and sing.
ifyou dont beleive me
try tapping your finger twice as fast and singing.
maybe im just slow.but i know piano players who sing and vice versa, but
who cant them simultanously very well.
