Paramore sent their song The Only Exception to their label Fueled by Ramen in 2006 so that means they had this song before starlight so basiclly Paramore didnt copy a song since they wrote it earlier
Key Chords and timing are meaningless. You Can't copyright those. Melody is different but will sound similar b/c it is the same chords and keys. The poster had to do certain things like speed up the song, and include breaks in T.O.E in order to get it to match up (not calling you out Greenroom I am just pointing it out!) Unless there is significant use of lyric or melody then there's dice. Let's see what the courts say. For comparison see Avril Lavigne's "work" Girlfriend
Hayley wrote The Only Exception because of her actual experience about her parents.... that's what i know.... but this song is just "accidentally" same, i think... i love paramore..
PARAMORE DID NOT COPY THE TENSPOKE INDIES, AND FOR ANYOEN WHO THINKS THEY SOUND GOOD TOGETHER PLEASE GO DIE IN A HOLE, PARAMORE IS AMAZING AND TENSPOKE INDIES ARE SCUM FOR TRYING TO SUE.
You have to understand that music-listeners are very impressionable, so it's very possible they accidentally copied them. It happens all the time. And, it does happen again in another song Paramore does. Except it's a rift. And the band was famous. AND THEY DIDN'T SUE.
@3HeartsWereBreaking And anyway, it would be impossible for every song to have a different chord progression and beat. So a 6/8, B/ F#m/E isn't that special.
The chord progressions are very similar, but you totally faked this one. I'm a big paramore fan, and "The Only Exception" was sped up to match the pace of the other song to make them sound more similar.
Almost all rock songs are made from the same 4 chords....almost all song progressions are about the same length... so to say that climax, breakdown and other things really doesn't matter , oh and looks like they end in diffrent places to.... I have written songs that sound similar to other "famous" songs in chords and such but there sometimes is just no avoiding it. I do think they sound a little similar but I dont believe that Paramore needs to steal anything.
Alot of people try n tell me that because he doesnt kno me that he did take my shit.. -_- lol Im not trippin or nothin, but people get inspired and shit happens.. his "i do its" are at the exact same tone, and repetitiveness.. he just has a different beat, and he say's boy alot afterwards.. Cuz if he didnt, EVERYONE would know he stole it.. Duhh. Same case here, thats why i kno for a fact that only exception was "Inspired" by starlighter to say the least..
Im no stranger to having my music copied by another artist so i kno wat its like... WHEN ITS UNDENIABLE, ITS UNDENIABLE.. As a matter of fact, for everyone here who listens to rap, check out my channel.. Listen to my song "I Do It" then listen to Big Sean's. Mines was made a MONTH and a half + before his on EVERY video posted of it. But, u CANNOT tell me he didnt get the idea from me. Trust me, i just didnt sue is all. Peace to all of my fellow paramore fans.. They stole these guys shit.. Dont try to deny it.. Im probably the biggest paramore fan here.. That doesnt mean i cant take reality, which is one of the things paramore tries to get us to see in most of their songs.. U have to understand, the couldnt copy it piece by piece cuz then its undeniable.. But they stole the idea of chords and melodies from them, hands down. Just switched up vocals and better guitarists. I still love only exception tho.
EPIC FAIL! The only exception stopped multiple times during this video while starlighter continued playing, that is the only reason things happen at the same time. They are not a like..

i've been a songwriter for over 15 years. the idea that this case is actually going anywhere is ridiculous. i also love how the public is just now thinking they are finding out secrets about songs when they find same key/chord progressions.
the big secret is that EVERY chord progression has been done by somebody else first. the melodies are incredibly different. they both wrote with pop format structure but SO DOES EVERYBODY ELSE.
sometimes happens that you do a song and yes probably could sound like another song but maybe is cause there are similar chords and more in this kind of music, so i dont think paramore wanted to steal the chords from this song this things could happen and in my opinion i like 1000 times the only exception it has more feeling and the voice of hayley makes it great i dont know the oher group is kind of average and boring , its my opinion
Stupid, imagine two songs in the same key. Oh wait the use the same chords too? welcome to music guys I IV V chords alround and don't get me started on standard cadences to bring a melody back to resolve. Oh yeah and sense you know, song form hasn't been messed around with much sense the 12 bar blues happened, every song has the same form for all practical purposes. Look here guys, every modern song ever is the same..... sort of...
Agree with @GoMJB12 the timing is quite similar and is also similar to many songs. Besides, this a pop song have you ever watched Axis of Awesome - 4 Four Chord Song? You should...
Quite honestly, this video doesn't really point out anything that both songs (and about 5 million others) share a very standard song structure...Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Solo/Breakdown, Chorus and are both in the same time signature, which is why parts line up. Neither of these songs are very complex at all, so it's not all surprising that two songs could sound similar. Not taking sides either.
The only problem with people saying that a lot of songs sound the same, is that there are very few that are this closely matched. I'm a Paramore fan, and have never heard of Tenspoke Indies until now, but that doesn't dispute the fact that they are REALLY a lot more similar than they should be.
But the way the guitar is play is different. And, the point is, that the songs are basically made based on progressions, or escales, it could be a coincidence, because the estructure of the music is based on that, and all the people that write songs do that. The other thing, maybe the Capo, Paramore use a lot of Capo, so it doesnt matter, really, the only exception is autentic, for me, paramore is original ;)
@crazychristianguy777 i completely agree! lol, also, it would be good if you also had the only exception as well, Which in my opinion is a better song. Opinion only. Plus, the songs are similar, but paramore has a thicker texture and a different style. And the video kinda indicates that they are siding a little with the other band, which is understandable cos their song was out first and everything, but without the only exception playing, people cant really make fair judgement.....
This video sounds perfect with earphones on. Anyways I don't like Paramore and I'm not interested in Tenspoke Indies (boyband, bleh) so I really don't care who wins the stupid law suit.
The chords being the same doesn't mean a think. Go watch this video:
/watch?v=Co9mW_9hH2g
as you can see, all these 40 popular songs use the same chords! Even if paramore was inspired by this song, I'd say the difference is big enough to make the tenspoke indies lose the whole case. I think the tenspoke indies did this in order to get attention.
Honestly, i think tenspoke indies are just jealous cause FBR rejected them and signed Paramore. But really what even happened to this? Is this lawsuit over yet, cause it's really nothing but a pathetic plead for attention.
Ya these are super similar...but honestly with a chord progression this generic these songs are bound to sound like each other. Not really a big deal in my opinion. I could put probably 50 songs on youtube from my itunes that would sound the almost the same. But this video is a pretty cool way of pointing out the similarities I gotta say.
there are thousands of songs that have the same chord progression, it happens, doesn't mean they stole it from this band, there is a limited amount of chords and in the beginning of the video he said he sped up the only exception to match starlighter, and the chord progression is the only thing thats similiar, everything else is different
A bit similarities, but they definatly didnt steal it, paramore makes their own music, so they had similiar chords, it happens sometimes. No need for a law suite smh.
This is stupid, just because the chords are similar or whatever... doesn't mean shit. These songs arent even that similar. Paramore didn't do anything wrong, they didn't steal anything. Tenspoke Indies are stupid people for trying to sue Paramore. This is ridiculous. You dont sue people for kinda similar chords. Clowns....
@shia2113 Actually, you do. Chords and chord progressions hold the entire song together. It's not easy to create a chord progression that sounds good.
there are hundreds of songs that when put together and broken down like this sound similar. im sorry but tenspoke indies are idiots for trying to sue them.
I love Paramore. I mean I really do. But the similarities in the music are pretty staggering when lined up like this. I'm sure many will disagree with me but that is my opinion on this.
to all of you bashing the video, the person probably did it based on the fact that paramore is getting sued by tenspoke indies. i love paramore and tesnspoke indies, but you can't deny the similarities.
Why would paramore need to copy a song. They are talented songwriters and I think indies are jealous cow their song wasn't as successful as the only exception
first of all theres no pint in comparing the 2 songs, cause whos gonna copy a WHOLE SONG. thats the last thing a band wants to do is have the SAME IDEALS as another song thats how u get sued. if you copy a song its gonna be bits and peices and if its like that EVERYONE would be sueing eachother cause i know ALOT OF SONGS that sound the same in many ways... :] try harder
Tenspoke it's just jealous because they dont have as much success as paramore, the only exception was written by hayley williams, she doesnt need to copy songs from others
But the build up to the chorus is common in today's music. You can't really count that as a similarity. That's a given. Actually, given these chords, half of the musicality in each song is a given..
Oh God, Please!!!! there are a lot of songs with the exact same chords and tempo -.- de vocal melody is completely different and so are the lyrics... yes, the musics are prety much exact but thats also because there's some 'stereotypes' to do music... there are a lot af songs using: Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge/Solo, Chorus... thats comun!! In my point of view, this process is stupid.. Paramore had a lot of sucess with the song, Tenspoke Indies not, and that motivated the process.
I like Paramore, but to me this sounds almost identical.... Sorry Paramore lovers on here, but no ones perfect. I think it's unfair to judge Tenspoke Indies when you know nothing of them?
At this point, all I can say is that people should educate themselves about what copyright laws are pertaining to music. Specifically the terms "substantial similarity." Infringement isn't just about exact duplication from beginning to end. Learn a little about song structure as well. A lot of opinions posted here would be changed once armed with that knowlege, instead of just reacting on emotion.
*researches Tenspoke Indies on Last.fm* 377 listeners? I highly, highly doubt Paramore had even heard of this band. And since the chords are fairly constant, it's no surprise the same progression had been written before.
Oh come on. 4 or so chords in each song, AT ONE POINT IN TIME a song is going to match another, and it has millions of times. Tenspoke Indies clearly thought 'Oh look lads, the chord sequence is the same, we could get good publicity from this...' I mean, as a musician, it's VERY hard to write completely original music anymore, there are hundreds of millions written every week with 4 chords so at least a quarter of those are going to be similar to each other.
Well If the songs weren't stopped randomly just to make the video the video lengthy it would be easier to tell if they were the same. Yes the songs sound similar, but Paramore write everything they sing. I've never heard of Tenspoke Indies untill now. But I don't think the song was stolen.
@outbreak1994 a band can't be gay, because gay isn't a description like stupid or dumb, it's a person's sexuality. i wasn't aware bands could have a specific sexuality..
This is crap, paramore didnt steal anything these tenspoke indie babys need to grow up the songs sound nothing alike. They just wanted attention this is shit
ok i dont even like paramore other then there first cd but everything that can be done musically has been done, and i can garentee that the same chords and key is probably in at least 50 other songs tenspoke needs to just grow some balls and man up
I think that paramore did it better.. and you know those songs that have the same tempo and beat, or the songs that use lines from other songs, how its all just a coincidence, and it really just made tenspoke indies a bit more popular, that all of these ignorant people are trying to make something out of nothing,. by the way.. these tenspoke indies people aren't as good of singers.. and their songs aren't as catchy.

Look here guys, every modern song ever is the same..... sort of...

@Timmyinc44 "every modern song ever is the same" not even close to true.
SHITTY modern music, maybe, but there are still tons of great bands out there.

Agree with @GoMJB12 the timing is quite similar and is also similar to many songs. Besides, this a pop song have you ever watched Axis of Awesome - 4 Four Chord Song? You should...

Another unknown band trying to bring down the more famous, happens too much.
colourmeout 8 months ago

The other thing, maybe the Capo, Paramore use a lot of Capo, so it doesnt matter, really, the only exception is autentic, for me, paramore is original ;)
bluebless6 8 months ago
@crazychristianguy777 i completely agree! lol, also, it would be good if you also had the only exception as well, Which in my opinion is a better song. Opinion only. Plus, the songs are similar, but paramore has a thicker texture and a different style. And the video kinda indicates that they are siding a little with the other band, which is understandable cos their song was out first and everything, but without the only exception playing, people cant really make fair judgement.....

i think 10spoke indies version sounds a bit more....gentle?

instead of fucking sueing paramore why don't they do a duet? Thumbs up if you agree.
SquirrelsLiveInTrees 1 year ago
The chords being the same doesn't mean a think. Go watch this video:
/watch?v=Co9mW_9hH2g
as you can see, all these 40 popular songs use the same chords! Even if paramore was inspired by this song, I'd say the difference is big enough to make the tenspoke indies lose the whole case. I think the tenspoke indies did this in order to get attention.
martijnroth 1 year ago
So then maybe they should sue the glee cast too, since they did a remake. :P

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds pretty cool?
MrsGeorgeHarrison777 1 year ago
Honestly, i think tenspoke indies are just jealous cause FBR rejected them and signed Paramore. But really what even happened to this? Is this lawsuit over yet, cause it's really nothing but a pathetic plead for attention.
lalaland1508 1 year ago
Ya these are super similar...but honestly with a chord progression this generic these songs are bound to sound like each other. Not really a big deal in my opinion. I could put probably 50 songs on youtube from my itunes that would sound the almost the same. But this video is a pretty cool way of pointing out the similarities I gotta say.
theshumway 1 year ago
there are thousands of songs that have the same chord progression, it happens, doesn't mean they stole it from this band, there is a limited amount of chords and in the beginning of the video he said he sped up the only exception to match starlighter, and the chord progression is the only thing thats similiar, everything else is different
inazuma131 1 year ago
It may sound the same, but who really does it better??? *COUGH!*paramore*COUGH!*

A bit similarities, but they definatly didnt steal it, paramore makes their own music, so they had similiar chords, it happens sometimes. No need for a law suite smh.
naiiRa2d0pe 1 year ago
It's different because in the end paramore has a fading sound, "& I'm on my way to believing." Enough said
thezombielovespie 1 year ago
I know other bands and musicians file fake lawsuits to get noticed. But I think this is the only exception lol! Song sounds SO similar geesh!
MicroKitty 1 year ago
This is stupid, just because the chords are similar or whatever... doesn't mean shit. These songs arent even that similar. Paramore didn't do anything wrong, they didn't steal anything. Tenspoke Indies are stupid people for trying to sue Paramore. This is ridiculous. You dont sue people for kinda similar chords. Clowns....
shia2113 1 year ago
@shia2113 Actually, you do. Chords and chord progressions hold the entire song together. It's not easy to create a chord progression that sounds good.
jkim4007 1 year ago
there are hundreds of songs that when put together and broken down like this sound similar. im sorry but tenspoke indies are idiots for trying to sue them.
allsopp91 1 year ago
@allsopp91 The chord progressions are exactly the same for fuck's sake -_-
jkim4007 1 year ago
no way. paramore rocks. tenspoke indies (who??) are just looser trying to feed on paramore's fame. go cry in corner.
LuluMija 1 year ago
Well they are nearly the exact same no doubt about it, but Paramore probably didn't realize.
I have accidently written a song that was very similar to another one without knowing.
flaminfingers 1 year ago
I love Paramore. I mean I really do. But the similarities in the music are pretty staggering when lined up like this. I'm sure many will disagree with me but that is my opinion on this.
MrsGeorgeHarrison777 1 year ago
to all of you bashing the video, the person probably did it based on the fact that paramore is getting sued by tenspoke indies. i love paramore and tesnspoke indies, but you can't deny the similarities.
snshnegurl04 1 year ago
These songs are not equal. No doubt about it!
h2n100 1 year ago
Why would paramore need to copy a song. They are talented songwriters and I think indies are jealous cow their song wasn't as successful as the only exception
mrsjoshfarro1 1 year ago
first of all theres no pint in comparing the 2 songs, cause whos gonna copy a WHOLE SONG. thats the last thing a band wants to do is have the SAME IDEALS as another song thats how u get sued. if you copy a song its gonna be bits and peices and if its like that EVERYONE would be sueing eachother cause i know ALOT OF SONGS that sound the same in many ways... :] try harder
MrOppsmybad 1 year ago
@MrOppsmybad No, you wouldn't. The chord progressions are the same for the entire song.

Tenspoke it's just jealous because they dont have as much success as paramore, the only exception was written by hayley williams, she doesnt need to copy songs from others
khalypsuh 1 year ago
But the build up to the chorus is common in today's music. You can't really count that as a similarity. That's a given. Actually, given these chords, half of the musicality in each song is a given..

*the vocal melody
the lyrics are so important in a song, and the lyrics have nothing to do each other.. thats all.
MikeRock94 1 year ago
Oh God, Please!!!! there are a lot of songs with the exact same chords and tempo -.- de vocal melody is completely different and so are the lyrics... yes, the musics are prety much exact but thats also because there's some 'stereotypes' to do music... there are a lot af songs using: Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge/Solo, Chorus... thats comun!! In my point of view, this process is stupid.. Paramore had a lot of sucess with the song, Tenspoke Indies not, and that motivated the process.
MikeRock94 1 year ago
I like Paramore, but to me this sounds almost identical.... Sorry Paramore lovers on here, but no ones perfect. I think it's unfair to judge Tenspoke Indies when you know nothing of them?
NemesisReap3r95 1 year ago
At this point, all I can say is that people should educate themselves about what copyright laws are pertaining to music. Specifically the terms "substantial similarity." Infringement isn't just about exact duplication from beginning to end. Learn a little about song structure as well. A lot of opinions posted here would be changed once armed with that knowlege, instead of just reacting on emotion.
bookemdan5O 1 year ago
*researches Tenspoke Indies on Last.fm* 377 listeners? I highly, highly doubt Paramore had even heard of this band. And since the chords are fairly constant, it's no surprise the same progression had been written before.

bookemdan5O 1 year ago
Oh come on. 4 or so chords in each song, AT ONE POINT IN TIME a song is going to match another, and it has millions of times. Tenspoke Indies clearly thought 'Oh look lads, the chord sequence is the same, we could get good publicity from this...' I mean, as a musician, it's VERY hard to write completely original music anymore, there are hundreds of millions written every week with 4 chords so at least a quarter of those are going to be similar to each other.
gigglygloo 1 year ago
Well If the songs weren't stopped randomly just to make the video the video lengthy it would be easier to tell if they were the same. Yes the songs sound similar, but Paramore write everything they sing. I've never heard of Tenspoke Indies untill now. But I don't think the song was stolen.
