  • This song was the first one I learned as a young player. I love the whole album this was on.

Great rendition. Way more articulate than Taj.

I play it in open D.

  • WHO are you? Why can´t I see your face? Are you that shy or what?Great music!!

  • This is amazin man! i would really apreciate if you could write this down and share with us.. u're a great mucisian! keep the good work

  • By far the best version I've found to date. Most like the 1st Taj Mahal version I heard long ago. Thanks for showing us how it's done.

  • i love this

  • Great Version! Best I've heard.

  • I'm with ramseywhiten. This beats Taj Mahal's version by a mile.

  • I always thought of this as a Mississippi Blues song...but you got that good old Piedmont thumb kickin along. Brother, this is a great version. (that old Resophonic box is gooooood!)

  • very nice man ...intro sounds a bit like dave van ronks green gree rocky road

  • Hey, amazing playing! I just bought an old 1930's regal guitar that looks just like yours, apart from it doesn't have the truss rod, do you know what model it is? Hope mine sounds as good as yours when it arrives! Cheers

  • Excelent! Thanks veery much!

  • I agree with all here , awesome version . Seems I've got work to do to learn this. Great inspiration Yogi !

  • I'm so fricking over crappy tab websites. I can't find a decent tab for this song anywhere. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

  • Great job!

  • Very nice! Great feel!

  • Taj would be proud, that is one great rendition. Good playing, and the singing is damn good too!

  • great job on guitar!!

  • what tuning is this? i can't catch it lol.

  • Standard drop D. I think he's a bit flat though.

  • By the way, very well done, big props to your playing!

  • What tuna-ing is this ? lol,....probably a dropped " D "...basically lower the high e string to a d.....great for bottle-neck

  • man, beautifully done. youve inspired me!

  • Very Nicely Done 5 STAR'S

  • your pinky finger pulls towards your palm like mine, man its aggravating!

  • put a splint on your pinky... seriously try it

  • very nice buddy. Chomp em on down!

  • Wow , best cover of this song i've seen , your voice sounds similar to Taj's at parts , loved your picking and that resonator sounds great !!

  • this is much harder to play than it seems because of the different rhythms between the thumb and the other fingers.

great job! it's gonna take me a few weeks to get it right.

    thx for posting

  • Sympa cette version, j'aime beaucoup !

  • Great work, Yogi! Great guitar playing, nice vocal, and this unmarkable this what makes the song great to listen to. Awesome version.

  • check my REMIX ED. of the Henry Thomas ED. of FISHING BLUES

FishBlu2K9 has been hailed as a groundbreaking post-hop samplification of the American folk tradition. Get in on it, y'all.

  • out of Henry Thomas, Taj Mahal and this guy, I actually like this one the best. I never thought I would say something was better than Taj Mahal. Blasphemy.

  • Thanks. Appreciate it.

  • That's ace!! Gonna steal it while yer not lookin'!

  • Realy nice version --Thanks--one of my favourite songs. Check out the Mike Seeger version recorded in the sixties, its worth a listen.--Thanks again!

  • thanks so much. absolutely great version.

another vote for a tutorial. this is one of my favorite vids!

    thanx again

  • Thanks

  • This is the best version of the song I have ever heard. I love it! I watch this video several times a day. Do you think you could ever post a video lesson on how to play this song? I'm sure it would be highly appreciated by many. Thanks for the entertainment.

  • Thanks. It's on my to do list for sure. Appreciate the comment.

  • man that was so sick. My step dad would love it if i played that shit for him when were out fishin. I think ill copy and do.

  • This is the best acoustic one guitar one voice version of this I've heard, thanks man.

  • nice

  • Outstanding playing. Love your guitar. It barks! The perfect song for a vintage gem.

    Give us more.

  • i bet you even fish like that interpretation of you! Just awsome!!! Greetz from Germany...

  • Top stuff mate. Very fond of this. Taj would be proud xxx

  • Thanks. Heard you have some really cold weather there!

  • Thanks for the quick reply. Love to hear some more of your stuff. I'm a pedal steel player. I try to play a lot of this kind of thing with the guitar when I have time. Getting my thumb to alternate constantly is a bitch for me. Fun to work on though.

  • Great Job!!!! Love Taj. You really nailed this one. Was that standard tuning you were using?

  • Thanks. It's drop D.

    DADGBE

  • I really like this too.

I have been learning this guitar part, to practice my double thumb picking.

It would be nice to see more of your guitar/singing talents.

  • i love this john, and i didn't know you sang and played, wow, you are talented, love the blues!! this is really a great one!

  • I love this version, WELL DONE. A lot of artists play this too fast or too slow. One of my favorite songs ever that I intend to be played when I pass over, among the people I love the most.

  • Thanks. Appreciate it.

  • It's to bad for people like Williefortes, They get so bored and aren't interested in anything that they have to make such rubbish comments in order to get attention. such a pity, but oh well.

Got some nice music there DeltaYogi, keep it up man.

  • Screw that guy. Don't worry man good call on the song. I'm just getting into Taj Mahal. I got it for my dad and I thought he was completely insane. After a while I started listening to it and right now I own the entire discography. Good music.

  • Ha! It was actually my son the joker who wrote that. When he was younger I used to make him sing at open mic while I played guitar. It was a great experience for both of us. He has a Skip James page on MySpace that's a nice tribute to a great bluesman and shows I brought him up well, ha!

  • CRAP...i feel sorry for your kids! i bet they had to listen to this sort of rubbish 24/7...in fact I would put money on it you coerced them into performing songs with you...probably this one in particular at open mic events, say at Capital Garage in Sacramento for example...just my opinion...

  • I am really sorry you feel that way. If I had a son like you, I would make sing delta blues before going to bed and feed him tuna and macaroni and cheese. Thanks for the positive feedback.

  • thanks for that wonderfully preserved folk gem. music's about sharing music, not profiting from music. you got something and you share it, thanks.

  • Very good

  • Well done! That's record quality music right there.

  • Great singing!

  • What, Heeey3. there's a point you wanna make or something? Idiot.

Yogi, you are great. GREAT. I'm about the same level (I reckon!!!) and it sounds just fine! I can tell you love it, and that shines through.

I haven't heard that Taj album for 20 years, so this was like seeing an old friend!

  • Thanks ChomFa,

I checked out the dudes profile and looks like this guy gets off on bashing videos like I care about his opinion. Play on brother Down Under!

  • Nice job in this... sweet guitar tone.

  • that was a real cool tune nice job!!

  • WoW!!

  • Just beautiful

  • I could listen to you play all day long....non-stop. Old people love this type of music...At least this old woman does. You did a great job, and should be proud of yourself. (I love De Blues, especially on that type of guitar.) Thanks a million for the concert!!!

  • Thanks.

  • Awesome! Check out Henry Thomas, He recorded that song in 1927.

  • Cool guitar and nice playing.

I own a very old original regal guitar too, unfortunatly its tuners are broken on there's is a crack on the side.

  • My paps introduced my to Taj Mahal some time ago and he said that he took this song as fishing for women.

  • Dude that was FREAKIN AWESOME... Love the old resonator sound... Great Job. Best cover I have seen of this song Taj would be proud...

  • yep. That resonator kicks down.

  • Wow, this sounds like the real song! You do awesome. <3 Def being fav'd.

  • A very good job!!!!!

  • Very very nice. Sounds like gold!

  • Give us some more tunes Yogi, you do a nice job.

  • Hi, Yogi...

Your "Fishin' Blues" is one of the best efforts I've seen on You Tube. Maybe the best. Clean style, a cool voice and the perfect guitar for this song.Mostly I like your fingerpicking.I like it that you're not afraid to attack the strings and make 'em pop. Gives the music an edge. Nothing soft and creamy. Snap those strings.Thank you for this. It's going to all my guitar playing pals at the Petaluma dog park.

    Tom

  • Thanks Tom.

I was in Petaluma yesterday. Will have to visit the dog park some day. Only been to the one in Novato on the way to Pt. Reyes.

  • Great Song. Thanks for the "memory". I have very fond memories listening to my father play this song, while I was growing up. He's in Novato about every 3 months. I'd love to hear a duet from the two of you two.

  • Thanks. Your dad and I are probably close to the same age. Navato isn't too far from here (Vallejo).

  • Yes, probably. Age 62 now. He grew up in San Mateo, University in Palo Alto, He flys from alaska every quarter to visit his father in Novato, and brother-in-law in Petaluma. I believed he learned this song while in Oregon before I was born (early 70's). Every so often, I would beg him to bring out the guitar and sing that song to me. :-)

  • Best Fishin' Blues I have heard on youtube.

    Good Job!

  • sounds like mississippi john hurt is singing !!

    yeah ! really, you're great ;)

  • Sweet! You get a good sound with bare fingers!!

  • as relaxing as fishing :)

  • most excellent.. thanks.

  • Awesome playing, man. You did the song justice.

  • bravo!

  • Nice, thanks. Yep I've got the song I'll have a crack at it sometime.

  • Did you just figure it out? or tab it?

  • I figured it out from an old Taj Mahal LP. The tune is in drop D.

  • played so sweet !

    love it

  • SMOOTH!!

  • so good ;)
