  • Itsa Mario.....with the boob expansion!!! LOL Good luck sleeping with those man boobs!!!

  • Hey everyone, party at my place.....YiffertheSniffer has signed off and once again resorted to name calling. To the many people he's tried insulting over the past years, his is a pathetic existence. He actually thinks he's cornered people. ROFL!!!

  • ROFL You have been mentally beaten!!! There are so many examples of you trying to criticize and insult others here it is just pathetic. You got owned today!!! Yeah baby!

  • @adadogensco "Mentally beaten" LOL. How old are you again? You express the mental capacity of a toddler. I don't need insults to conquer your ilk in arguments; in fact, I'd gladly accept a deal that we have an intellectual debate on the condition that neither of us insult each other. However, seeing as your only means of defense when cornered in a debate is to insult me, then we have a stalemate buddy. The only thing you've "owned" is banal stupidity. Good night toddler.

  • @YiftertheShifter1 Watch again how Pre gets his ass KICKED in the final 180m by two seconds...2 seconds in the final straight might as welll be one minute...

  • @VirenKickedPresAss ayyy, you'll never be as fast as Pre was, soo why you talking shit...

  • Yifter the Snifter-of-Viren's-ass: His comment from playing Mario....YiftertheShifter1 says: January 26, 2011 at 8:04 pm LMAO-douch-bag-wanna-be

I use an ice storm and bowser’s flame to knock most of Francis’s energy quickly. Otherwise he is an ANNOYING boss!

  • @adadogensco Thank you, thank you stalker fiend. If all you can do is insult me for playing a few video games, then I'm gratified. I

  • @YiftertheShifter1 You're quite welcome boob expansion guy who plays Mario!!! ROFL I don't need to insult you as you've done that yourself all over the Inet. There are so many people urging me on based on your lack of character & previous attempts at insults. he he he he

  • @adadogensco Oh dear, it's time for your pills, you hyperventilating, delusional child.

  • YiftertheShifter1 a.k.a. YiftertheSnifter-whiner baby with his head up Viren's ass. Anti-American douche bag!!! He he he he....watcha gonna do now....bayyyyyyybahhhhhh!!!! Torch.

  • Virén's '72 Olympic 5K victory came from his careful running of almost all the bends (curves) near the inner edge of the first lane, which spared him tens of metres compared to his chief rival Steve Prefontaine-United States. Prefontaine gave Virén a handicap of over forty metres at the 1972 Olympics 5,000 metres. Prefontaine actually ran a 5K distance faster than Viren, but the 40 metres handicap gave Viren the victory. This fact makes it difficult to label Viren a faster runner.

  • @YiftertheSnifter1 LMAO If Viren stops running your head will go far up his ass!

  • Why is Prefontaine better known and admired around the world than Viren?

  • @batchannel1981 Wrong. He's more admired in the United States, a nation of about 300 million people. Viren is a legend, immortalized in Olympic history, who won four successive representations to the Finnish parliament (twice as much as Seb Coe to put in perspective), and also chaired a successful bid to host the 2005 World Championships of Athletics in Helsinki. Seems pretty prestigious to me.

  • @YiftertheShifter1 You are totally correct. Pre is admired by the 307,006,550 in the US whereas Viren is admired by the 5,363,624 in Finland. Clearly, according to your illogic, Viren is more admired. LMAO

  • @adadogensco And yet if you ask a significant amount of those 307,006,550 people, they will have no idea who the hell he is! HAHAHA You are such a douche bag. Is Pre have any significant popularity outside the US? Didn't think so.

  • The epic but the later sad moment at 6:06 on the video with Pre.

  • Yeah. I do not understand a word he is saying, but I sure understood him at 0:44 when he said, "Prefontaine."

  • Comment removed

  • Is it me? or is it strange that I see no africans in the field...

  • @tripleMmagic There is one, Mohammed Gammoudi of Tunisia!!

  • Pre- "No one cares about the 3mile"

    Bowerman "Make 'em care"

  • Prefontaine lost a medal because he ran like a bull without brain. He was absolutely the best American runner but he didn't understand that at olympic level you have use brains in addition to legs. Viren has later told how he had several alternative running tactics in his mind before the run.

  • ok...im really starting to get bored of this. this argument isnt going to end anytime soon.

  • Guys, you know this issue has been going on for like 15 pages of comment right? Lol let's settle a solution. Virenkickedpresass is in fact a dumbass who is most likely some Finnish guy who probably stopped running after 6th grade and has absolutely no knowledge of anything. That or he is just Vieren's bitch. Either way, Prefontaine is an inspirational runner and Vieren isn't. While I respect both of them, I think we can all agree that Pre is the better runner. BY FAR!

  • @rw315 Who the fuck is "Vieren"? Yup, Pre was better... unless, you want to count any runner with Olympic medals.. Did you notice that Viren has FOUR Olympic Golds...?

  • @VirenKickedPresAss Viren has 4 Gold medals, really? You're right that no one notices that. Hmmm, what does it say that people notice other things when judging the greatness of a runner? Loser.

  • @rw315 First, according to his Youtube profile, Vkpa is American. Second, I am a Finn, and Viren was enormously inspirational for me as a kid. Third, Americans' claiming that Pre was "better" shows either a total ignorance of the facts or ridiculously bad sportsmanship.

  • @PaulVinonaama The people that think Pre was better must not have seen the race...! As I remember, Viren KILLED the field in the final 180m.. and has four golds, and many world records. Pre only had American records.. a far cry from being even close to Viren...

  • @VirenKickedPresAss I remember watching this race and i could not believe Ian Stewart getting the Bronze, if he had made that spurt a little earlier he would definetly have got silver

  • @1middlesbrough I agree. If you watch Stewart in other races, he has a magnificent kick, and can close with pretty much anybody....

  • @VirenKickedPresAss Stewart was Awesome! He really ran smart. He seemed to have a bit of trouble for the last 600m, but man, he put it together to grab the bronze, didn't he? He could have hardly timed it more perfect.

  • @prporter1 In my opinion this isn't the case; he simply didn't have the pace and lost contact with the leaders and just gave it his all with 100-200 to go; luckily for him, Pre depleted his tank by then.

  • @YiftertheShifter1 Possibly, and he did lose contact- but look at prior races- the guy is a ferocious finisher. If he and Pre were even with 100-200m to go, I would have bet the farm on Stewart.

  • @prporter1 That's true. What I'm saying was that he didn't "go for bronze" or exactly time his surge; he just ran flat-out, and, with his ferocious finish, managed to reel Pre in.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss Pre was gutted when he trailed in 4th , did he run in mexico 68?

  • @1middlesbrough No, 72 was his first Olympic Games.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss LOL You find it so hard to offer a compliment to Pre. LMAO

  • @rw315 I'm disagree with your comment....the one about "stopped running after 6th grade"....he probably graduated school after the 6th grade....VIRENKICKEDPRESASS never ran at all!!! LMAO

  • pretty damn sure Viren was blood doping and didnt deserve any of those wins.....but thats just me.... and the tests that later on proved it...

  • @mgulesian1 GOSH! you said the tests LATER PROVED IT! You must have information that no one else HAS! How about you show the information of the "TESTS THAT LATER PROVED IT"?!?!? Show us WHERE the information is!

  • @mgulesian1 We're all STILL waiting for your PROOF of the "tests that later on PROVED it.." !!

  • @mgulesian1 Any luck finding "the tests" that later proved it?!? It's been a couple of weeks. You should have been able to find PAGES of evidence by now...

  • Viren has the personality of a turnip, well u get what i mean he is a joker, steve prefontaine is about 100 times more interesting, basicaly go home Viren u Waster, and u are a waster and scumbag, just go home plonker,ha ha ha ha ah.Viren as interesting as a turnip?

  • @bathtownship Oh, NOW I get it... You thought Pre was trying out for "America's Got Talent", and NOT racing in the Olympic Games..! Viren was trying to win a gold medal... I bet Pre would rather be a so called Turnip with GOLD arouond his neck...LMAO!!

  • @VirenKickedPresAss I didn't think 3rd graders were allowed to post on YouTube, but you have proven this wrong!!! VKPAIABA

  • @batchannel1981 Are you done being a creepy stalker?

  • Comment removed

  • @adamsdg1 HAHAHAHAHAAH. Resorting to crude, banal insults instead of having an intellectual discussion with me, then saying that *I'M* the third grader? Wallow in your ignorance, little boy. You need all the help you can get.

Oh and one other thing: I can post whatever I want on my channels, and if all you can do is try and insult my intelligence because I don't worship your little demigod, then please, do us a favor: when your school bus comes by, jump in front of it. You won't be missed.

  • rip Pre :(

  • I've watched this so many times wishing that pre would win...

  • @tripleMmagic Why don't you try Dave Wottle's run for a change?

  • In lane 4 you'd run farther than a 5K. Sorry you don't understand that.

  • Pre is all inspirational.-

  • It is not an argument but a fact that PRE ran the fastest 5K distance that day.

  • @thebatphone1981 That doesn't make sense; if he ran the fastest 5k he would have won the race.

  • You guys are arguing about pre running an extra 40 meters . Hes having to run faster being on the outside, spending extra energy. But hes saving energy, because hes still running much slower than what hes used to. Had he run on the inside, he wouldn't have had any extra energy for a faster kick, it made no difference. If the pace would have been much faster for the first 2 miles, pre's kick would have been basically identical and nobody else would have had the energy to pass him.

  • It has been shown Pre actually ran a 5K + 40 extra meters by running in outside lanes. Prefontaine was the 1st runner to reach the 5K mark as Viren ran on the inside lanes. Even though Viren took home the medal, Pre was a faster/greater runner! Pre lives!!!

  • @adadogensco Yeah, it just shows what a DUMBASS Pre was. Last I heard, the object was to cross the FINISH LINE first...or at LEAST, 2nd or 3rd...

  • @adadogensco Well, j4str said it better than I could say it, but that you can suggest a 4th placed runner who was a victim of his own tactical ineptitude is a "faster and greater runner" than the world record holder/ double Olympic champion reveals you know nothing. People like you are ruining the sport, making cult-like deities out of a 1970s era runner.

  • @YiftertheShifter1 Dont be dissin Pre he was the best runner and ran a great race that day and if u are sayin shit than id like to c u in his shoes that day and c whut u can do faggot

  • @Runninglegend117 LOL, what an idiot! I'm not dissing Pre or saying shit about him. I have no quarrel with Pre; he did his best and was very close, and that's what counts. My quarrel with idiots like you who turned him into a cult, a deity, a demigod. You call yourself runninglegend? You are completely asinine! What part of my posts can you disprove? Are there inconsistencies? Lies? I'm very objective, and for that you call me a faggot? LOL, you are an uneducated brat! Not worth conversing with!

  • Stewart what a pathetic Bronze.

  • Pre was the man.

  • Viren is a BADASS. Pre is a DUMBASS.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss Go suck Viren's dick somewhere else.

  • @coolstorydoee Because it is YOU that wants to suck it so much? LMAO!!

  • @VirenKickedPresAss You act like a kid, shut the fuck up and quit being an immature stay at home bitch that only has the balls to say things online. LMAO!!

  • @coolstorydoee Let's keep on track and talk about how Pre got his ass HANDED to him by three people in the final 180M...LMAO!

  • @coolstorydoee You said it all brother!!!

  • Did you know that Steve gave Viren a 40 meter handicap by foolishly running off the line? This would've made Pre the victor easily. However, Viren won this race fair and square. He was the better runner that day.

  • Viren had an unorthodox stride. He looks like he doesn't lift his knees.

  • Viren was a tough and cool runner. He gets passed by both Pre and Gammoudi with 260 to go but 100 metres later he's back in front and holds it. He won many races just on his toughness and will.

  • Both the 5 and 10 at the 1972 Olympics were fantastic races. One of the real highlights of track distance running.

  • Pre ran a pretty good race. He tried to push when he should and tried his soul to win that race. I will always admire Pre. He was a very brave runner like few exists or have existed.

  • Has anyone got coverage of Jack Buckners euro 5000 win in1986?

  • lol why do finns keep time with a Star of David separating the seconds and milliseconds?

  • @monkeybarrel67 They don't. It was to honor the Israeli athletes who were killed by pro-Palestine terrorists early in the 1972 Olympics.

  • notice how much pre ran on the outside lanes to try to position himself. think of all the extra distance he had to go than viren. viren only won by like 10-20 meters, however pre ran at least 30 meters more than him because of him commonly taking the outside lanes.

  • @heresjohnnnyy1 It's that kind of arrogance that makes people dislike Americans. It's that kind of attitude that creates Osama Bin Ladens and other such villains who would like nothing more than to bring about America's downfall. Yeah, the USA is the most powerful country in the world, but so was the Roman Empire, Great Britain, Alexander the Great, the Mongols, etc... Look what they are now?

  • @YiftertheShifter1

No one stays there forever. Gotta enjoy the top while you're there.

  • @leftylawlz Yes, but it is what one does with power and "being on top" that defines character. Arrogantly boasting of your domination and abusing is a sure way to win lots of enemies. Examples of this abound in history.

  • Why didn't Pre lead the entire race?

  • VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN! VirEN!

  • If Pre had only got out sooner.

  • Que grande lastima que no puedo ver la pelicula prefontaine en español

  • dude, your're getting wayyyyyy too worked up about it. Chill out. I just like Prefontaine better that's all.

  • Hey Finns? Notice that Finland sucks at just about every sport now. Oh, and the U.S. wins all the Summer Olympics.

  • @rw315 WTF does THAT mean?

  • @rw315

    Not the 100m dash.

  • @rw315 "US wins all the Summer Olympics" 9/10 for showing why Americans are the laughingstocks of the world.

  • @YiftertheShifter1 yea but were the most powerful country in the world and could easily nuke finland's ass if we felt like it. TEAM AMERICA

  • @rw315 Let's see... Finland has barely HALF of the population of Los Angeles...or, roughly 1% of the US population... pretty weak argument, DUMBASS

  • @rw315 Have noticed any less success in american sports after big THG case ?

  • viren ran strategically, like he did most of his olympic races.he seldom veers away from the edge of the oval thus saving effort to compensate at the latter stages.it works really if you got the kick or the endurance especially at the last lap.he is not and never was spent on the final lap of all his olympic races..he is very patient..

  • Prefontaine was the absolute best. So all you Finns can shut it.

  • @rw315 Yeah, the best. Uh huh. I guess that explains why he doesn't have an Olympic medal, because he is the best.

  • @rw315 most def man..pre was and shall remain an idol for most runners....finns are just some faggot ass country who cant even speak right....

  • @456japan WTF does THAT mean, DUMBASS?

  • @456japan "Hi! I'm a fucking, ignorant, American! Aren't I a DUMBASS??!?"

  • if only pre would have led from the beginning and not walked the first two miles, it wouldn't have been a race where the runner with the fastest kick won

  • @heresjohnnnyy1 That's not a good tactic. If Pre is eager to lead, then others will draft off him and he'll be using more energy than the rest. Historically this tactic has failed in many cases: David Bedford ran from the front of the 10000m at these Olympics, but then faded. The fastest 5000m runner in history, K. Bekele, tried it in 2003, and it still came down to a contest of the fastest finishers and he could finish *only* third. Props to anyone who can accomplish this, but it doesn't work.

  • @YiftertheShifter1 i knowthat you use more energy leading, but if he had taken the lead and set a faster pace, obviously he would have switched the lead between runners because viren and stewart wouldn't have kept their slow pace: they would have sped up with pre

  • YiftertheShifter1, I mean, that I am sick and tired that for almost 40 years has some people try to prove themselves that Pre was actually a "winner" althought he was a bigges lose of this race - even lost bronze at last scene when was not good enough.

Great runner who was not so hard as he proclaimed before the race. Viren never proclaimed. He ran and won.

  • If this race would have been faster, only Puttemans and Viren would have had a chance. Puttemans ran a world record (13:13:0) the same year. Viren ran 13:16:4 the same year.

  • @yiftershifter pre isn't respectEd because of his records or movies or any or that crap... Pre is respected because of his aggressive running style that no one to this day has been able to match, that's why he's great

  • @123Bloodmeat "Pre is respected because of his aggressive running style that no one to this day has been able to match" You should watch Deriba Merga- the man does what Pre does, only in the marathon, which is way tougher than any track event. Such aggression cost him a medal in Beijing- passed in the final 400 meters when he could only jog. Pre's only as great as he is seen to be today because his fans canonized him, turned him into a saint-like figure, and made him a standard in running.

  • @bader854

Pre did not have a kick at all and he wasn't built like a runner; he was a small kid. At Oregon he wanted to run the mile like everyone else but Bowerman knew he couldn't outrun anyone in the final lap so the longer distance 5,000 was the race he became great by leading from the front and trying to burn everyone out early with a fast pace. In this race, the pace was crazily slow and so he tried to push it toward the end but the race ended up being a kicker's race.

  • @Zamoro

Also I'm a poor kid, I live in empire..(Thats part of Coos bay) so what's the "he was a poor kid from Coos bay" mean?? Again how u kno he was poor?? U ever see his house he grew up in. I work right down the st from it. Nicer then mine, prolly nicer then yours

  • @Zamoro10

I'm awhere of his living conditions, still doesn't make any difference. U make it sound like European runners where so dominant bcus of there financial status. I agree they had fake government jobs, but explain kenyas, and ethiopias dominance in running?? If housing, training facilities, and doctors make the difference

  • Prefontaine was a great runner. YiftertheShifter I think some people are right if people would have ran fair as they enforce them today im not saying Pre would have won big time but dont you feel it would have been a better race? Like how would you feel knowing you lost a race that you dreamed of winning but the people who beat you were doped and did not run it fair? I think everyone agrees with when I say we all would be furious and outraged.

  • @bader854 Ok, so who doped?

  • @VirenKickedPresAss some say Viren doped but also he trained up at high altitudes giving him more red blood cells similar to how doping would be but with out the actual way. It's not wrong if that how Viren trained I think its smart im just stating thats what I read about him.

  • Please child - free ride; do you know how poor college kids are? He was a STUDENT! = free tuition and a bed that's it...and a stipend of $50 a month for food back then. He worked as a bartender and lived in a trailer. He was a poor kid from Coos Bay. He didn't have a GOVERNMENT supporting him like Viren or all the rest with fake jobs...their job was training year-round in top-notch facilities Pre couldn't take money from organizers because only America stuck to the Olympic ideal of Amateurs

  • @Zamoro10 What an IGNORANT RESPONSE! You say he didn't have a government job? OK, let's see what he DID have. Free room, from the U of O. Free food, from the U of O. Free travel, from the U of O. Free gear, from the U of O. Please shed some light on the top notch facilities the others trained at. FYI, the Europeans ENVIED the US University of training- "you mean, all I have to do is go to school, and I get to RUN with my expenses PAID"? If you think he didn't take money, you are BLIND.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss You my friend embody the meaning of the term hypocrisy.

  • @alexwiley12 Feel free to back up what you say.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss "Feel free to back up what you say." ~ There, it's as simple as that. If you can't put two and two together to decipher what I'm saying, I'm afraid you wouldn't be smart enough to understand what I was saying if I explained it word for word, either.

  • @alexwiley12 Just like I thought. Another DUMBASS spewing rhetoric.

  • @VirenKickedPresAss Feel free to take your own advice and back up what you say, and stop the hypocrisy at any time. I'll leave the door open:

  • @alexwiley12 Already have, with every post. Still waiting for your PROOF. Go ahead. Can't do it, can you? Just like Pre- can't win the gold.

  • @alexwiley12 Did you seriously name your username that? What the fuck?

  • @athleteization Who are you talking to?

  • @alexwiley12 Excuse me. I was talking to VirenKickedPresAss.

  • Pre had a full ride to Oregon... That means free housing, food, and bill bowerman as a coach. I don't think he had it that bad.

  • The pace was way too slow. Pre didn't have a big enough kick but he ran to win and ran (by almost everyone's account) one of the gutsiest races ever.

I agree with most commentators that the Euros had jobs supplied by the state and could train year round and might have been doping like the East Germans. Pre was an American student whose own country wouldn't pay for anything and didn't help them train when they could in the off-season. Winning isn't everything, it's how you run.

    Go Pre Go!

  • @Zamoro10 I though Pre didnt have a good enough kick at all though out his running career? That's what I heard and read at times because isnt that why his biggest challenge throughout his life was racing people who had excellent kicks? I'm not bagging on him or anything I respect and praise Pre for how ran and agree that he could've ran that race in Munich. Im just asking cause that it always looked like in his races even in the movies.

  • feels that Viren was doped, like Gammoudi and Stewart. Prefontaine was a moral winner althought he was only fourth. Probably Pre would have win 5K in Montreal 1976. He is the biggest runner ever - he promised run 13.10 in Munich, but failed, because other men were doped. Very sad.

  • @papmjny What a stupid thing to say. You have all the classic myths that Pre idolators have come up with. You have not a shred of proof that Viren doped, and so it has become that only Pre didn't cheat but the others did? Take a hint! Then the whole "Pre woulda coulda shoulda won in Montreal" is not very likely because Pre wasn't even the top American when he died. The field was much tougher than the Munich field, containing men that were much quicker than Pre.

  • @papmjny The biggest runner ever? Again, very ignorant. I respect Pre and his place in American distance running, but in terms of world distance running Pre is barely a footnote. Pre doesn't hold a candle to men like Viren, Nurmi, Zatopek, Yifter, Gebreselassie, Coe, El Guerrouj, Bekele and so many others. The only thing Pre has are two movies, a couple of national titles, records that are now broken, and a lot of tributes from people who wish he could've achieved more.

  • @papmjny "he promised run 13.10 in Munich, but failed, because other men were doped." Read a book. Enough said.

  • Pre definately should have won

  • @andresian34 Nobody but the one who crosses the finish line first is the person who "should have won." That is true for every race (unless under certain circumstances). Viren finished first. Pre finished fourth.

  • Viren was so damn good! lol. Watching this race I see when Pre wants to try to separate the field. Viren does too. He comes and tucks in right behind Pre and waits for him to slow down and pass. He was so good because he was so smart. He almost always tucked to the inside and saved as much energy as possible for the final fight. Pre ran like a cocky young kid so he lost. He ran so much more than the rest by running on the outside. He was good but not that good.

  • Prefontaine would have whooped them all if he'd had a faster start :\

  • @mrwinkysup And how do you figure that? If he'd frontrun the first half of the race, he'd have tired and faded, just like Bedford in the 10000m. Pre's best 5000m in this day was 13:22.8, compared to Viren's 13:16.4 and Puttemans 13:13.0. No way was he going to run away.

  • @YiftertheShifter1 Yes, but before the olympics prefontaine was doing to short a distance training for 5000m. He did reps of 1500m and 800m which lead to him not being able to run like he normally did. He was the best, he just didn't know how to bring it out.

  • @mrwinkysup That was rather incoherent; not quite sure what you're trying to say. It's quite standard to do 1500m/ 800m intervals at 5K pace, or 200m-400m reps. Other than that, I'm not sure what your point is. And considering Viren won the 10000m and came back to win the 5000m here, I would have to say that he was the best runner of these games, not Pre.

  • @YiftertheShifter look dumb ass Pre should have wone this race if you go back and look at Pre's trial qualifier he ran 6 secomds faster than viren i will say that viren is also a legend but had pre run the same time as at the trials he would have won by around 27-28 yards the biggest problem with this race was that it started out way to slow pre ran an increddible 4:04 for the last mile he got boxed in early which didnt allow him to front-run which was his strong suit so next time you wanna tal

  • @TheChocolate619 No, you look Mr. Smart A-leck: first, Viren ran an even faster time in the Finnish trials, 13:19 to 13:22 for Pre, then later a 13:16. Pre was not going to run away from Viren. Second, no two races are the same: they are always different. Pre was a lot better than his compatriots, but compared to the rest of the world, he could only settle for 3rd or 4th AT BEST. His competitors had faster finishing speed, better stamina, and better race tactics.

  • Third, Pre had plenty of opportunities to move to the front (the video of the entire race is missing, but I've seen it). In fact, Viren spent the first few laps in last place to give you an idea. If an athlete doesn't like the slow pace, then he/she has the choice of making it quicker. Pre didn't move until the last mile, which was a planned move, but he couldn't shake off the runners like he did in the trials. Face it: it is pointless to override Pre's defeat. Viren ran 4:01 for the last mile.

  • @YiftertheShifter1 pre ran roughly 40m more than viren though but its a race and he fucked up but i think that pre would have won in montreal

  • @UploadDirect True, but there is no guarantee that Pre would've learned this lesson by Montreal (if he learns it at all), but that Viren ran on the inside is but one of the many subtle tactics Viren used to outmaneuver these Olympic fields. Personally I can't think of any tactic that Pre could've used to defeat Viren- other than of course Viren having a bad day, which he clearly didn't in Montreal, or else the other contenders like Quax, Foster, and Dixon who all have good pace.

  • @UploadDirect You are right, that Pre ran a longer distance, than Viren, but to win olympic gold, you also have to use your brain. Viren is an example of an extremely intelligent runner. Pre's tactics was bold, bur rather foolish. Before the race, he even told everybody, that he is going to run the last mile in 4 minutes. Viren only told, that he hasn't any specific plans, just follow the race and then decide about tactics.

  • it takes serious balls to take the lead like that! pre lives!

  • @ObjectManipulator55 Yeah! It takes balls to MEDAL! Viren, Gammoudi, and Stewart are LEGENDS!!

  • GO PRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hahahah visst finnar kan snacka mkt skit... lasse viren var ju fan aldrig Ren under Olympiska spelen.. han vinner aldrig nagot lopp innan OS. Gulden borde vara Gammoudis. sa finnar fck off javla fuskare

  • I LOVE watching this video. Viren KICKED ASS.

  • Some people thinks that Prefontaine would have won this race too...like 5k in Montreal. <unfortunately he was not very winning type. Sadly he passed life 1975.

  • Have you seen that in the first half of the race, Prefontaine made the same mistake as Puttemans. Running too much in the second lane.

He was strong enough to make the race though, but not though enough.

Why fight for a position in the first 10 laps ?

You can easily pass a weaker runner and follow the pacK.

Save your energy for the last three laps and fight, with you got left.

    It may surprise you.

Of course Viren, Prefontaine and Puttemans were the best.

    Viren was the cleaverest.

  • @4807avh do you know anything about prefontaine? while i agree that he did run on the outside lane too much, he was a front runner. He would control the pace and therefore control the race. He tried to sit back and wait this race and look where it got him. About 8-10 seconds slower than his Olympic Trial run.

  • @that1mexicano I agree that Prefontaine was a front runner, so was Dave Bedford.

But in1972 that was not enough. Not even Ron Clarke won more then a bronze medal. And that was about 10 years earlier. The era of Emil Zatopek and Vladimir Kuts was over. Now you still need the fond, but also the endurance and even the speed, to win a 5000 m.
