Pretty good for a one minute video (admitted several hours wouldn't cover every aspect of starting a saltwater). I don't understand some of the criticisms I've read here, been keeping saltwater for 24 years and said much the same thing when people have asked me.
I really need help starting my first EVER saltwater tank. It's going to be a reef set up in a 60 gallon tank. Please send me a message or comment if you can help me!
well if your going to get one i recommend you read lots of forums and books. Many other aquarist regret reading too little if ment that they could save all their fish the previously owned. Another important thing is to KNOW YOUR CHEMISTRY and the nitrate system. Pleeze let the tank mature for a month to grow a healthy colony of good bacteria. Adding live rock can shorten the maturing process. One pound per 1-2 gallons should do the trick. Also don't listen ass-village. goodluck
how much do leapard sharks cost or how much do black tip sharks cost either will help me also im getting a huge tank well more like a pool (building myself) and was wondering if there would be a problem keeping it outside.
okay you know he's not perfect and all and you know he did say true things in this video, its not like you can give every little detail on saltwater or freshwater in a 1minute long video
who you trying to kid ? saltwater is 10x more money and a whole different aspect on how you approach the system. i could maintain fresh water fish with my eyes closed with both hand behind my back. that like saying cats are the same as dogs. worst comparison i herd in a while.
hello there i have no idea when it comes to marine tanks, and would like to post a comment here for some help .
i have kept different fish over the years but never marine , i am thinking of setting up a tank depending on what i need, i dont want to spend money on more filteration ect.
at the moment i keep african malawis , i have a 200 litre tank with dead coral sand and dead ocean rock a 300 w heater , and a fluval 405 external cannister filter is this suitable for a marine set up
I think if anyone believes (sucessful) saltwater aquariums (even fish only) are not expensive and high maintenance they are in for a big surprise. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying and or trying to make money off of you. That said its a fun and challenging hobby. Good luck. You may need it!
I go to the fish store this guy works at. I think this is a case of ill executed video scripting. Talk to him in person he knows his stuff salt and fresh. Also don't buy into technology spending if u dont have to. I currently have a thriving soft coral nano reef 29 gallon with no skimming or uv sterilization and 1 simple sponge filter with 3 hydor koralis power heads. Utilizing nature more correctly rather than technology. It can be done, for begginers i recommend the technology.
Yes, what he is saying is fine. A beginner can go FO (fish only) or FOWLR (fish only with live rock) and then perhaps consider moving to a reef set up (i.e. with corals) later on as they get the basics handled.
I don't see anything wrong with what he has said, except that it's an incredibly brief overview and thus lacking in enough detail to figure out how to get started.
stick to freshwater, you obviously know little about marine aquariums; "saltiness" , salinit, and the proper instrument to use is a refractometer. You need water movement, ever been diving in the ocean? Current and lots of it.
we are detroying our nature. Becouse beginners are no good with fish and fish die. But there are still more sw fish being born then dieng in our aquaruims
i want to convert to a marine reef tank with corals not a f.o.w.l.r tank. i have a 110 ltr tank and im going to buy a protein skimmer, 3000ltr/h wave maker and 1 white 40w T5 tube light and 1 blue T5 tube. do you think that and some live rock would be ok for filtering a tank with 3-4 fish in?..
Hey cool thanks Hunter, I'm going to go buy a standard tank and filter I'll make sure I get a different bottom substrate. While Im at the store I'll get a hydrometer which will measure the 'saltyness' of the water and maybe an additional powerhead. oh no EPIC FAIL
by the time the calcium based materials that aquarist use in live sand and live rock dissolve to help buffer the ph, the ph will already be too low to support most marine fish life. (maybe mollies, provided the ph didn't drop low enough to cause aluminum hydroxide poisoning.
SUMP PUMP!!! I would never use "live sand" or "live rocks" because it can also harbor disease(s) and kill off your whole tank. Beneficial bacteria needs to grow naturally on its own but you can also buy beneficial bacteria in fish stores.
the reason people use live rock and sand, is because (when in good quality) the diversity of beneficial life outweighs the risk of dangerous pathogens.
it could kill of your whole tank, but if properly maintianed/set up, you should either notice/kill it before any fish are added, or only have a few fish die, because you certainly wouldn't add all the fish at once.
anyway situations like that are rare.
bacteria can not be bought in fish stores, however a catalyzing enzyme can.
You actually should use crushed coral to replicate specific reef habitats- keep in mind that some reefs consist of a lot of broken shells and rubble fields, not powdered sand. Still, it's more practical for most aquarists to purchase powdered sand so they can "hire" a cleanup crew of sandsifting fish and invertebrates. If they purchased crushed coral, they'd probably need to vacuum it themselves on a regulart basis, which is unattractive to most new hobbyists. I prefer sand myself! :)
lol i got a thumbs down! well i mean, think about it. they talk about everything the most important element. i may have thrown some morton salt from the cabinet! lol, he called them fishes

OK, i hav a 55 gal tank, a Penguin 350 Bio-Wheel Filter, and a small filter that fit on my sisters 10 gal tank, i took her filter, and it moves water around fairly well, would these items work when converting from (FW) to (SW)? Please Help!!!
He states 'possibly' a powerhead. This is NECESSARY! You need movement in a SW tank, much more than freshwater. Also need a powerhead designated just for breaking the surface of the water to promote gas exchanges.
he states "possibly" because in some cases, the filter has an exiting head that does the same job as a powerhead. also protein skimmers also cause movement so this really depends on which setup they have made.
It is just misleading. I do see what you're saying, but there needs to be more than one srouce of movement, a majority of tanks have 3 or even more 'water movement' sources. Remember, we are not just keeping fish, but trying to make them a home just like their very large one.. the ocean. By doing this, they needs movement, and lots of it!
yes, you could get by if you had a fowlr with super hardy fish and a good filter but honestly you need one. smaller size doesnt make you exempt, actually you have less room for error

this guys retarded.
-a marine tank is NOT anything NEAR a freshwater tank
-never use crushed coral for reef tanks.
-a hydrometer doesnt measure "saltyness" in water, it measures the specific gravity.
