I love them but multimooy, you make an excellent point. When I watch dancers I'm primarily watching the follow and don't always notice the lead except to maybe their connection and personality. I didn't notice anything over the top, I'll have to watch again but that is why I don't enjoy watching Benji dance. It comes across as welcome to the Benji show, IMHO. I do, however appreciate his immense talent.
I prefer to watch other dancers rather than pros/champs. They're a bit too heavy on the "show" rather than the dance. She did a fantastic job in this....he over-danced, as does Benji, IMHO.
You know the one thing I find odd: Here are these two hot hot dancers, doing a dance, telling a story about dancing with each other, and they keep looking at the audience. It does weird things with the focus...I keep thinking..."Look at how hot he/she is, why the hell you looking at me? Pay attention to your partner."
GrandCarriage - It's because when you're doing performance dance, you're presenting yourself to the audience. You're supposed to keep your chin up (insecure dancers look down a LOT) and make a connection with the crowd.
@legolasegb You missed my point. It's not about looking down. It's about that when you are performing to a song that tells a story ABOUT your partner...It's stronger when you don't acknowledge the audience. let us be surruptious voyeurs on the story telling. Mugging to the audience somehow lessens the story when it's an intimate one.
They are being judged, so they look at the judges in one directon and the audience in the other. Audiences can sometimes sway judges.Since the audience is made up of other dancers, they also know what is great dancing and appreciate it, so in a way, you're showing off to your peers too.
This is something I dislike about professional dancing, too. I want the dancers to look at each other and only look at me to emphasis something unusual. Looking at me the whole time is distracting and ruins the dancing for me.
Wow, really snazzy choreography... Someone said that he lost a lot of weight and was really working out a great deal...You certainly can tell. Those clothes fit like a glove.
