  • wow what a find this vid... thanks to you for posting. looking at all the info & advice here and elsewhere online i'd like to give this a go building a canoe with outrigger like this one to fish and for crabbing/ lobsters down from where i live here on the isle of wight england. are some of the materials generally costly? how hard is the main hull & sail? i am a fairly experienced woodworker & handy. lovely to see poverty bay btw, just read season of the jew by maurice shadbolt.... wkd book

  • @kinunshele Kia ora,I got the old surflife saving boat for $400nz on a trailer .The outriggers an old surfski paid $70nz for it.You can use a PVC pipe for an outrigger bend to shape with hot fan heater. The hull has two skins ,Between them its filled with foam very strong and safe .Blue plastic tarpaulin is cheap and strong but I now use a large windsurfer sail .Ive used small canoe in the past aswell to build them gret fun and good luck.

  • hey,

Spent a few months in gizzie, working in Woolworthhs there in 2003, (from England btw) Great spot, loved the east cape. Great Outrigger.

  • Nice vid!

Any plans you could let me know about? I've been thinking of making an outrigger canoe myself.

  • Kia ora, sorry But I have no plans to build an outrigger.I have made four of then now using different kinds of canoe as the main hull.I have found that pvc tubing is very good as the ama (outrigger it`s self).Bend the rooker shape of it using a fan heater to soften the pipe, bend it well its hot .I hope this will help you.

  • @surfingcarver .kia ora, thanks.I have finished painting my waka and soon will be posting more of it here.I have done a complete refit and changed the riging and now have a large 10.7 sqm windsurfer sail and home made spinaker.I have been surfing it aswell with friends on smaller waves.Good fun.

  • @MrTim42 I'm not sure if you're still interested in outrigger sailing canoes, but if you are, you can get a copy of Gary Dierking's book "Building Outrigger Sailing Canoes" which includes complete plans for 3 sailing canoes, plus instructions on how to build and a bunch of other info. You can also look up and purchase Deirking's plans at duckworks boat building supplies website. I'd recommend the Wa'apa........
