  • this makes me so happy and twitchy

  • Are you sure this is at the MUDD club? The filming looks like Amos Poe's on TV Party. Well then again, I know they did a TV Party episode AT the MUDD club once, so maybe this is it?

  • Sounds like he's playing the guitar through a ring modulator.

  • haha! I love the part of "loirinha safada".

  • Is the picture in the background that of Samuel Mudd on whom the club was named?

  • Fantastic

  • this is amazing<3

  • you people r freaks....

  • @Smartperson911 Thank you!

  • i think it's brilliant. arto lindsay started playing guitar in 1977 and as far as i know never learned an actual chord. i think it's great. unconventionalism at it's best. if unconventionalism is a word.

  • Comment removed

  • ikue holding it down.

  • don king were better.

  • I would have loved to have seen Madonna at the Mudd Club.

  • Arto Lindsay is awesome.

  • I wish more bands had the courage to make music as adventurous as this.

Most end up imitating what came before, making slight evolutionary changes (technological/musical).

DNA made music that had never existed before (and Arto Lindsay's STILL making great music).

When you decide to just go out there and create something radically different (without worrying about mainstream, critical, and even financial success), eventually you'll hit on something that becomes distinctive, even revolutionary.

  • @Toocold the only thing new or revolutionary, is that people think this stuff is great. I think it's ok, mainly the bass playing.

  • @Toocold I highly highly highly reccomend scissor shock then!

  • To those of you complaining about this music... how the hell did you even find it? People seeking this band out ought to know what they're in for. Turn on your radio and fuck off!

  • The recorded versions of these songs are alot better. On this performance they sound loose, sloppy and not at all together. Which turns the songs from noisy, grating rock to a mess, and it's actually kind of hilarious. Also, they all look like they hate their lives.

  • This isn't art. It's crap. I can give you definitions if you'd like.

  • @davephilpott Stick to Lady Gaga and Steely Dan, UTTER generic shite :O)

  • @davephilpott Oh I would just LOVE to know what the "definition of art" is... people like you hold evolution back.

  • gawdamn that Lenin always showing up in the most inopportune places!

  • made me laugh and that \ makes me like this band. i don't even mean that in a bad way.

  • this band reminds me of primus

  • @ElvisBluntman777 Really? How?

  • I really doubt Gristle had recorded or crossed the pond by the time these guys got together.

Also, DNA used traditional instruments, TG is centered on tapes, synths and sound manipulation.

  • this is AWESOME, saw Arto in North Beach S. F. playing twenty years ago, he is a fucking rockstar!!

  • first song is blonde redhead. hell yeah

  • this band is helped found the movement of noise music (you suck)

  • @apeshiitgmail No. Try listening to some Edgard Varese or some Karlheinz Stockhausen. Their music is as noisy as you get.

  • woah, it keeps mentiong stockhausen in a kraftwerk bio i was reading earlier, i forgot to look that stuff up but you just reminded me.

  • We could always count on an interesting evening at the Mudd - sad those days are gone...

  • You gotta love avant-guard music and the people who love and make it! =D

  • you suck

  • i was messin around with music and gutair for fun look up orion eats babies by skunk cabbage then check the myspace im not saying im good just sounds like it

    support the skunk

  • were they on heroin?

  • you'd think so, but no.

  • This music is FOR REAL, much more directly connected to reality than the plastic commercialized dreck constantly heard everywhere.

  • if buy commercialized you mean "someone might actually want to buy it"

  • that is just not true, but you can go ahead in think that way but just know that it is not good or bad, its only what you make of it, just because its so diffrent doesn't make it FOR REAL, a chuck berry song could carry the same emotion, you smug douche bag

  • @lutherheggs better than anything ive heard in the past decade @ least

  • @lutherheggs well arto lindsay went on to make plastic commercial music, but it wasnt dreck

  • rockon!!!!!!!!! bonzo76 no new york was a classic comp along w/ let them eat jelly beans...the band suicide, how do you download them you type there name and all of a sudden sumtin happens cop r at the door i know shut up squeaky bonzo76 rockon!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • this video is funny but wierd tho

  • BLACK MAMBA!

  • FUCK YEAH

  • todo el no wave

    gracias a the velvet underground

  • art generally speaking is supposed to push boundaries...i have no problem with ppl playing music that sounds like everything else but its nice to have artists like this push the envelope

  • Sightings are the ultimate evolution to all the NYC no wave stuff. Anyone who digs this, would love Sightings.

  • Wow! Great stuff! Kinda hard to dance to, though...

  • anybody who loves DNA should give thumbs up to those who post NEGATIVE comments about them and thumbs down to those who post POSITIVE comments about them. you know what i mean?

  • yeah

  • tu madre cabron

  • ha, I can dig it

  • Hi. I saw this video like two years ago and it changedmy life. Thank you very much from los polvorines, a little town of argentina. Please, watch aur homemade and lo fi videos

  • Ability is (apparently) overrated.

  • These guys are pretty cool. Good to hear some no wave outside of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks.

  • yes, but that is Gordon Stevenson right? Anyway I can't wait til Teenage Jesus on ATP

  • DNA was so ahead of their time...just like Kraftwerk was ahead of their time..although Kraftwerk was only 35 years ahead of their time, I believe DNA was 75-100 years ahead of time....I'm sure a youth shall be born that will listen to this as if it was bubble gum music!

  • LOL are you saying this is the music of the future?

    good thing we'll be dead.

  • look DNA is an awesome band and their compilation DNA on DNA is an amazing album. you know question music blah blah and all that is great but this sounds kinda bad. maybe its the audio quality... but from what I have heard on the album is great. maybe this wasn't their best live set I don't know. I would hope that at other times they played better cause they all seem so out of it and generally unenthusiastic. would suck if they always sounded like this because on the record they fuckin rule.

  • Go listen to Tom Jones.

  • You couldn't do this if you didn't have any arms or if your band had one fewer person. Oh yeah, not to mention that they did it first.

  • Yeah well everyone CAN, but not everyone DOES.

  • i don't know why so many people gave you negative marks for this comment:

"anybody can do this really just gather a bunch of people who can't play their instruments, play random shitty chords, and yell out random shit while acting retarded and there ya go!!"

in think you are complimenting the band by saying this. that quote sums up why i love DNA. and the best part: DNA was a group of perfectionists who practiced constantly. isn't that funny/cool in a way?

  • Then you shouldnt listen to No Wave. You totally are missing the genious behind DNA and all No Wave. Your idea of it is completly wrong. Go listen to some blink 182

  • what do you mean exactly? i am interested in your idea, and assume you are right, but i need you to explain in more detail.

  • i love arto

  • was this sampled for 'milkshake' by kelis?

  • i love both these tracks !!!!!!!

  • I bought the EP "A Taste of DNA" when it came out. I vividly remember my roommate's reaction when I first played that EP. He absolutely hated that record. Never before or since have I seen a person respond so angrily to an album. Of course, I loved the album, and I played it continuously. It must have grown on my roommate, because after a week, he went out and bought his own copy.

  • That's amazing, my experiance has often been that many people don't really want to open teir mind to truly original music.

  • Huh. Y'know, DNA is one of those bands that I've always heard of, but never really heard.

So now I've heard them. This is pretty neat. Really fun noisy stuff. I like it.

  • god this is amazing. DNA has done so much to deconstruct the traditional aspects of "song" while destroying all that was pop in NYC. DNA was such a progressive band. It's so funny how people will speand so much money on Marshal amps, guitar lessons, and Stevie Ray Vaughn chord books. Keep shreding your sick BC Rich, you uncreative asshole.

  • skronk!

  • Arto rocks!

  • it's so weird seeing people claim that this is ridiculous noise that no one could enjoy, because it seems fucking fun to me

  • and oh my first comment was for jocheeeN

  • I think it is very cool.

    I enjoy it.

Fuck what other people think, some people like U2, some people like Joe Cocker, some people like DNA, some people even like them all.

  • what the hell it sounds like a cat fight

  • Yea,DNA

  • Comment removed

  • I agree with every word I understood :)

I don't understand why we can't like the music for what it is or isn't without others being condescending or accuse us of liking this because they don't. I don't even know why I like it I just do. The organized distortion and the structure is unconventional I couldn't resist. I don't have any hipster friends or much friends at all. I'm the only one who listens to this genre of music. Who I'm trying to impress? That doesn't make much sense.

  • hey dont vote this comment down, yoko rules man

  • yoko ono is a racist

  • You guys are idiots!

All you hear id the normal melodic music crap everyday of your fucking lives!

That's the reason why you don't appreciate music when it totally becomes an art!

You can't appreciate their music because to you it's just noise

And that's what makes you all fucking idiots!

Stop telling me that you're the best guitar player out there because you aren't!

  • We have many relatives and families to check DNA we can determine if they are our relatives.

  • arguing that DNA's music doesn't take any talent to create is completely missing the point

it's essentially the same argument as saying "my kid could paint that" when looking at a Picasso

listen to the music Lindsay and Mori made post-DNA - they're both incredibly "talented" musicians... they didn't make music like this as an excuse for not being able to play

but even if they did - what does it matter?

I can see something worthwhile in it. you don't. why argue?

  • trust me, dude

there's music a lot weirder than this

and A LOT weirder than "Revolution #9"

and it's definitely still called music

and I still listen to it as music

and isn't all music just 'auditory art' anyway?

    it doesn't really matter though

    call it whatever you want

  • @TimNicholas Yea i'd call it pretentious audio defecation.

  • @Rankmoistmeat cos yer a moron

  • @wi11ydapimp lol you're hilarious.

  • @TimNicholas What1? There is!? Tell me please!

  • Ikue Mori!

  • awesome awesome

  • It may not be hard to play or create but it is hard to comprehend. Maybe if people looked beyond how hard some thing is to play, they would get it.

  • Just becuase you can't pigeon hole the genre of DNA dose not mean they suck. And yes I'm directing this comment to all you people saying "what is that?". In fact it makes them even better that you are asking that question I ask it to myself every time I hear DNA. There is almost nothing to compare them to. Thats what makes them so great.

  • All you haters, even if this band did suck (which they don't), in the grand scheme of things does it really matter, and are you negative comments simply a reflection of your own feelings of inferiority. Perhaps, if you had something creative to contribute you'd have something positive to focus your attention on. How many of you even play guitar?

  • bigman1225 Nintendo Guitar Hero doesn't count

  • Well, I've played for 21 years and I say DNA is one the most important bands of the last 40 years. So there you go, chief.

  • you're really lame.

  • i love people who are seriously concerned with what "hipsters" are listening to, and go out of their way to not like a band solely because "hipsters" enjoy them.

  • you sound 80. and i never claimed it was music. if it were music, i probably wouldn't like it.

  • Yeah whatever ya bloody scoundrel. what are you doing looking up DNA's videos if you detest them? Tracks like 'new fast', 'lionel', 'not moving' and 'blonde red head' are fucking awesome and i don't think i'm cool, most of my friends are deadshits like you who think it's crap.

  • Go abort yourself.

  • Incidentally, awesome video! :)

  • halk the bands i love wouldent be who they are if not for this band. the locust, le shok, ex models, bad dudes, all got there insperation from this band and other from this time.

  • Oh really? I'm not a hipster. I like all kinds of music. I like this band, you don't, fair enough but don't go make stupid ill-informed generalizations about people and genres of music.

  • Rofl so random.

  • arto!!! love the shades!!!

  • Its called NO WAVE. Look it up.

  • la gueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • I am soooo glad I gave this a listen to. Just proves to me that I have not experienced everything that music has to offer. I totally love this!

  • this is great. short but sweet. i wish all bands played for 11 minutes and just ended it. yeah!

  • I was there that night. I miss the Mudd Club. It was on Lafayette St as I recall.

  • white street, off lafayette

  • this is sooo good, the camera techniques compliment it as well, I like the bass, I am DNA as a whole can't be beat, but the bass really helps to gring out the dischord of the guitar, They all support eachother, This seems more real for me then a lot of pop music, and current rock,, it's just so raw.

  • this is incredible. it sounds melodic to me, i don't understand why it is not melodic. i probably just do not know the exact meaning of melodic, but it sounds beautiful to me. the succession of the notes sounds beautiful. and the rhythms are gorgeous. it must have taken such concentration to play in that band. and is the drummer a man or a woman? who knows. amazing.

  • the drummer, ikue mori, is a woman. she has a bunch of albums on tzadik, mostly electronic stuff i think.

  • It sounds melodic because it is melodic.

  • shut up scenester.

  • you must be a good fock.

  • this is great. I can understand why kids wouldn't like this. it doesn't follow the predictable pattern of shit bands like MCR and Fallout Boy. Bands like this made Sonic Youth who they are. What too young to even know who SY are? hahaha

  • Doesn't that beginning bass line remind you of "The Bug" by Jerry Dallman & the Knightcaps (on the original _Hairspray_ soundtrack)?

Oh yeah, for any of you guys out there that still don't believe in Arto Lindsay's talent, you should hear his intricate (and very melodic) Brazilian samba guitar playing, à la Jobim. So there :-p

  • YES!

  • another thing, while i'm at it... who gives a fuck if he can or can't play, anyway?!? if rock... or any music... were all about technical skills, you could kiss goodbye 99% of the idols. it's about feeling, in my opinion. say something. make me feel. surprise me. make me remember you. fuck all the rest of that crap. that's the same shit i used to hear about swans.

  • i have a difficult time understanding how anyone who has seen arto live could say he couldn't play guitar. i'm actually laughing. so much of his recorded music around "proves" he can play in the most obvious ways. but like i said... it's just funny. it doesn't upset me. no one can make me feel bad about my taste. in fact, i pity the fool whose life is so pathetically hollow that he has to go around trying to insult other people's tastes because he has none of his own. oooh. touche!

  • loves it!

  • "I could get on stage with a guitar and start playing random shit and yelping, its not hard."

No one said you couldn't, and no one said it was hard. This music isn't about technical proficiency... it's about expression. I'm sorry you don't like it, but your dislike of it doesn't mean other people don't derive value from it.

Or I could put it this way - you don't get it, fuck off. I think the former is more polite.

  • i love this. anybody who doesn't is a fucking moron. this music spits in your faces, fools!

  • now guys and gals

I walked into cb's in the early 90's and saw

arto, peter scherr and syros baptiste at 3.00a.m.

holy crap... just five star dowtown music

  • doubt you could

  • why are you even bothering to comment? just because this band has reached a moderate amount of respect over the years it still doesn't make them famous. you just feel somewhat angry because it's not up your alley. well i like it so why don't you mind your own business and keep your comments to yourself.

  • But you would not know the value of it.

  • hahahaha, ye totally this is more like the voice of jesus, its completely on another level. if there was somthing like supergodmanart this will be it. just saying its art does no justice

  • do you really think art could be interesting if everybody got it?

  • Youtube comments are hilarious. It blows my mind that people could turn a DNA video into another "who's the best guitarist in the world' pissing contest.

Anyway thanks for posting this, audio is nice and clear. Excellent snapshot of No Wave. I saw Arto at a bookstore a few years ago, he's developed a very nice singing voice, though he still can't play guitar for shit. ;)

  • Callate y aprende a apreciarlo, pelotudo

Encima tenes que andar avergonzandome a mi, un compatriota

  • God, I love no wave.

  • Yeah moih u got it the first song is blonde redhead.Thanx for posting this legend.performance.Its so importent for the no wave/punk era!!

  • arto cant play guiter you dumb ignorant shit do ur research

  • arto can actually play guitar, and is a real musician he pretty good at brazillian music. if arto is in a class by himself that class was taught by "Derek Bailey" arto wishes he could be Derek Bailey

  • Arto Lindsay is still one of the finest guitar players of all time. Up there with R. Grey, T. Verlaine, R. Quine (RIP), N. Young, G. Branca and T. Moore. Sorry Clapton never made that little group!

  • please dont compare first off arto is in his own class he cant actualy play guitar so compareing him with real musicians as far as skil is off because he made skronk its his style and knowone can touch it learn your music simon ps glen branca wishes he were arto and so does sonic youth

  • this is rare of rare because not only is every song played very different then how they usualy sound but its the whole live preformence one song is money but this is amazing- oh and its snake on my mind not in buddy know your dna

  • The rock!awesome video

  • blonde redhead?
