I'm going to dissent. I don't dislike this, but the number is called Struttin' for a reason. And there's not a lot of it here... should be fun, bold, brassy. Amazing technical proficiency by the whole family, but that's not what it's about I don't think. If you're going to give props to Pops, dazzle.. entertain.. strut.
had the opportunity to play this piece with Wynton and Jason, what's great about this family is how down to earth they are and are always eager to educate people of the wonderful world of jazz and of the life of Louis.
These dudes could sell out shows until they are playing with dentures in their mouth....talent like THAT is hard to put together these days with the crappy music we have on the radio. =[
Worth listening to Ellis Marsalis in the album "In the bag" with him on piano, the Adderley Brothers and the late.....great(really great) drummer JAMES BLACK.(RIP)...
playing quotes? how dare they! except that it's a great tool. and literally every licked they played is recycled.. they have 50000000 licks and use them in different places at different times.
Man, Charlie Parker had such a crazy impact on Jazz that all solos are gonna have "quotes from Donna Lee in their solos". The thing is that it's gotten to a point where soloists do it subconsciously; Good ear though!
If you right times in the video where they do it. I'll tell you if it really is a quote.
@redhouse7 right on! i spoke with Wynton @Marciac Jazz festival like 10 years ago and my friends and I told him how much we admired Branford and he just said "oh Branford....he's good you know,he's good but he's not serious,if only he could work seriously..." at the time we didn't even understand what he was talking about and we started a jazz 5tet right away that was called...Not Serious ;)
Ahhhh.... now this is what it all boils down to. Everyone one swingin and havin a good ol' time. And yes, they're ALL playin the chord changes. there is such things as altered chords, diminished and augmented chords. throw some anticipations and suspensions in there, there's all kinds of fun you can have with this tune. By the end of ellis' solo, his sons are just enjoying there father play
Delfeayo came to Iowa and did a clinic near where I live, for an honor band that I am a member of. Of course, I went. After the clinic, his quintent played a set of various compositions and standards. I was lucky enough to be called out of the audience by Delfeayo himself to take a solo on the last tune, It Don't Mean A Thing. It, as of yet, has been the highlight of my short career.
does anyone else find it slightly disturbing that they have enough people playing instruments in their family to make a combo and that they all sound that good?
Thats was fantastic. Thanks for the great post. Imagine having that many family members with all that talent. Brandford and Wynton play so different than their younger brothers, but Ellis plays it like it is. They are giants standing in the footsteps of giants.
I love Wynton but Branford plays this much better.

Jason on drums is absolutely the most talented of the family! Watching him play with Ellis at Snug Harbor is definitely a high point in my life!

@catfishphil
Jason plays xylophone too....the dude is heavy! He's had some pretty good gigs over the years, very versatile and barely gets any rec.

If you are a better musician, then by all means post something. Anyone who plays jazz plays someone else's tunes

@nfn58 That's kind of what jazz is.. If you listen to enough recordings, someone's going to have played it before.

Great playing, but Louis Armstrong did not write it, and these guys should know that. Lillian Hardin Armstrong,
Louis's second wife wrote it.
