It is with joy and a heavy heart I watch this. When Tatiana died so young it was a terrible loss to the opera world as well as to those who loved her. And worse I cannot forget in that same year we lost Lucia Popp and Arlene Auger also brilliant and consummate singers. I saw Tatiana singing the role of Caesar in Giulio Cesare of Handel at Geneva Opera about 1981..... It took my breath away and she was without compare. Thank you for posting this.
They are both superb, Troyanos an exceptionally lyrical Adalgisa, Caballe the greatest Notma of the post-Callas era....BUT, this is conducted way too fast!
@ferrykalos I agree! I prefer when the second part is a clear emotional change from one of despair to great camaraderie; the extreme change in tempo that is usual for this piece, and really facilitates that emotional change, is missing here. You can feel the ladies try to pull back the tempo a bit. Then in the cabaletta the conductor doesn't keep up with the slowing in tempo and accelerando in the re-statement of the melody.
Still, an amazing version of a beloved duet. Luxury casting indeed!
@MissJessyeNorman yuo are perfectly true. With this fast tempo we loose all the emotions and the great sweetness of the execution. Still, an amazing version, as you said.
The conductor could have given them more time - I mean really - Caballe has such beautifully spun pianissimi - it is posturing if it is done too much - but let them be artists!
He acted as if he was rushing to catch a cab outta there and get the act overwith!
I have seen/heard several versions of Norma - Sutherland in Canada on DVD, studio CD with Scotto, live CD with Deutekom (San Francisco), and now this La Scala with Caballe. In all of them the Adalgisa is Troyanos and she equals or surpasses her colleagues. Do I detect a trend? One often forgets how excellent she was in bel canto type roles - I Capuleti, La Clemnza, Guilio Cesare. I wonder what she would have been like as Jane Seymour in Anna Bolena or some other bel canto mezzo roles.
Beautifully sung but TOOOOO FAST...It pains me to listen to it sped up like this...

@ditogam
Thank you very much for posting this great historical performance. Love Troyanos' Adalsisa so much!
Great performance of Caballe, too. For me, not sure about conducting, though...
Ditogam, thank you very much for sharing. Really enjoyed it!
Best regards

the tempo seems a little rushed... but these two divinas handled it flawlessly.

If you haven't already seen Tatiana's 'O Don Fatale,' oh, don't wait.
Or her seamless Santuzza. Ugh !!!!
And such a regal, handsome woman made, ironically, much more attractive by the drooping eyelid.
Gavazzeni should have known what chemistry he had in front of him.

Both Caballe and Troyanos in true form, but would have been sooo much better if not rushed by Gavazzeni.

Yeah, why is the conductor rushing all the time? ah, it spoils everything.
