i hate the way they call roy a villain, he's just a sentient being trying to stay alive, his life spans almost up and he's getting desperate, he doesen't want to kill anybody, just simply doesen't have a choice. Harrison fords character was more of a villain to me, the way he called all of his freinds and it's really depressing to think that beings with sentience could be treated and hunted by that, all that time into the future and still no more enlightened then we are now, in fact less so.
Back in Nashville, I knew "Tex Cobb", and I asked him about "Blind Fury". He said (and he was far from, and in no way, bad-mouthing Hauer) that Hauer was difficult to work with (never leaving his trailer/non-sociable). This might go a long way, in as far as..."his lack of major lead roles". There's no doubt about Hauer's screen command, but that means nothing when it comes to Hollywood egos/bullshit. Cruise may not the actor Hauer is, but he's far more the "major, Hollywood player". Sad.
He's a brilliant actor! And, I'm also glad, this film has finally gotten the recognition it so richly deserves. My only regret, as far as his career..., is that he didn't play "Lastat", in Rice's, Interview With A Vampire - he would have stole the movie. Tom Cruise never commanded the presence, the part so badly needed - Hauer would have done so in his sleep. In Blade Runner, he commanded/lead the replicants, and this was needed in Vampire, to stop the farce it eventually turned into.
Rutger Hauer is the actor I grew up with. His first big, leading role was a knight named Floris in a late sixties tv series. Also his first cooperation with director Paul Verhoeven, who, later on, also made a career in the US. However impressive other roles (Like Blade Runner) of his may be, my best memories of him as an actor will always be his role in Soldier of Orange. Sentimental reasons, but a fantastic, adventurous movie also. Surely one of the best of both Verhoeven and Hauer.
Rutger is on of the most under-rated actors ever. He is superb, and his portrayal of Batty was amazing. Little-known fact...while Anne Rice was writing 'Interview with a Vampire' in her mind's eye, she was picturing Rutger as the main character (le Statt? spelling?) and when she found out that the pipsqeak weirdo Tom Cruise got the part she was devestated. Rytger would have made the perfect vampire.
Harrison Ford is a handsome actor, another pretty face promoted for the monster movimaking hollywood industry, that's all. he's not Pacino. i think he's a little better than Richard Gere excuse my frankness.
@myryckyz Are you kidding me? After the 80's Hauer fell to the bottom of cinema productions, playing shitty roles in shitty movies. And you're comparing him to Ford...
I actually like Harrison Ford, epecially in Blade Runner, I guess the real fanatical "Directors Cut" cult could watch the entire movie with the sound turned off and get the ultimate thrill. As to the comments about the Aliens Quadrology, I am still waiting for the Director's Cut where they use lighting so that we can see what in blazes is happening. Again fanatics could get the ultimate thrill wearing a blindfold listening to the action. Sigourney Weaver? Dog ugly! The Alien was better looking!
The interviewer said he didn't understand the original movie when he was 12. Well gosh! He really would have understood the Director's cut. Who is he kidding. For those who really want an ultimate director's cut, they can play a blank DVD and guess the entire movie! The original was superb, the voice overs, the ending, everything! I am sorry I have heard Rutger make his banal comments, it's spoiled my opinion of him. Some things are best left alone. The director's cut makes a good beer coaster.
Well, I believe you are in the extreme minority since even Ridley Scott intended the movie to be what is now the Final Cut. The original cut was what the publishing companies wanted pressing Scott to put on voice overs and the like. As a viewer I always favor the intentions of the director. That is why I only watch the special editions of my Aliens Quadrology.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I honestly think the "Happy" ending was just an offer of SOME hope. I preferred it way over the newer cut (also losing the HF voice-over sucked (IMHO)
Having said this I am really glad that the actors are still alive nowadays to me seeing interviews with Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer brings back the Blade Runner legacy to my thought wich always makes me feel respect towards life as it is. Even be it so Mystic and Grim ^^
Is it not bizarre that even after 20+ years this movie gets attention and respect from people who have seen it back in the day and even the youths that see this movie nowdays.
This is a Gothic , grim movie about the fcts of life like emotion and eventual death. The story is fairly straight forward but the way it's brought is even today still revolutoinary to my experiance.
I will never forget watching 'Blade Runner' when I was growing up. One of those amazing movies you still remember after you've grown up. I was fascinated by 'Blade Runner'. I haven't seen many Rutger Hauer films, but I like him. He's pleasant to watch and a fine actor. I also remember watching 'Blind Fury' and 'Wedlock' back then. Completely different roles from what he did in 'Blade Runner'. He's an excellent versatile actor and he comes across as a nice person.
Rutger Hauer is always amazing! Just watch him in "Turkish Delight" I have seen him in many movies, but this is one of his earliest Dutch movies. A masterpiece, actually.
Rutger has such a beautiful, rich voice. It seems to get a little deeper over time, but it doesn't get hoarse or an old man's voice.
I'm sorry to say that not getting the respect he deserves is partly his own fault. He admits he's never been that interested in major blockbuster movies if he didn't like the character. He's always done what he thought was fun, and that includes a lot of crap films. If he had been more selective, he would be a much greater star. Not that he cares about that!
for example the hitcher, his preformance was great in that movie, he made it worth while to watch, if i was going to make a movie , he would be one of the actors, especially if this had been 20 years ago :P
rutger hauer is one of thows actors who should have gotten more roles than he did, because he really is great, especially as villians, which he never really played that ofter
I love how Rutger Hauer can assume quite an American English accent, yet he can revert back to his Dutch tongue and accent. This ability made his performances phenomenal in films such as "The Hithcer".
This is the first movie I've seen where I rooted for the villain. I've since seen it 67 times. Once in the theatre in 1985, some 40 or so times on betamax, a dozen on VHS, once again on the big screen (1992 director's cut), and the rest on pirate vcd. Manny E.
It to me. Is art. It is like Dark side of the moon. Not just a movie or music so to speak but a piece of art. I think we need more cyberpunk films. the only thing that has come close is the fifth element. BUt bladerunners darkness and claustrophobia felt real.
Rutger is so cool.

No need to compare him with american actors, as a status increaser.
This guy is a fabulous actor with a great presence and an incredible voice.

Unfortunately, as great a piece of film as this is, it is also a film about Transhumanism.
People should really investigate that and realise what the future could become, if we don't watch out.
