RADThird1, Thanks Brother, because you got it dead on. And yes this is an anti-war song and could be nothing else. But it still pays praise to all those that have served with honor and selflessness. And we own them so much for all they have given over the years to keep this country free and great. What happened to our guys that got shot down this past week is a clear example of that type of sacrifice.
If this wonderful song ain't an anti-war song I'll eat my hat. It's a condemnation of all war. The young people die the old people cry. That's war. Always was, always will be. Those who see this as a pander to country and patriotism need to listen again...hard.
jackhammer111, I know what the cost in human life has been in Iraq / Afghanistan and I do appreciate all those sacrificed leading up to the death of Osama bin Ladin. Also I know what it’s like to learn that a loved one died while fighting for our country in Vietnam. Finally, I respect your right to stand by your comments, however you should talk to your Minister to help you get past the rage because it is hurtful to imagine your anger. Good luck Brother and take care.
"Proud to be an American" is pandering. This is a personal message meant only to make you think about sacrafice and responsibility. If that's a bad thing, then I quit
Stand by your comments all you want. According to you, all works of fiction are cons. Because Picasso wasn't at Guernica, his painting was obviously "shameless pandering." Your argument is as convincing as your apostrophe useage.
This crap is not deserving of mention with Hemingway or Whitman or Mailer or Vonnegut. If I thought for a minute it rose to art I wouldn't be offended.
I stand by my comments.
Save your sorry for over 4000 American dead and their families, and the Afgani's and Iraqi's who's dead nobody nobody puts at less than 120,000.
This song, and its video, is a flag waiving glorification of war masquerading as anti-war. It's manipulative. It want's to tell you how to feel without making you think.
unless she had a real brother who died in the middle east, this is shameless pandering. a con perpetrated by a despicable piece of crap to make money off of our sympathy for those 4000 plus that have died in the longest war in American history that has no end in sight. flag waving for money.
@jackhammer111 I think it is sad you would automatically think that the creation of this song was strictly profit driven. I suggest that you consider all the songs, poems and other literature that were written in an effort to pay praise to those that sacrificed their lives so the rest of us could live free lives in the USA. So in a word if what you are saying is true, the likes of Walt Whitman, Earnest Hemingway and so many others were just in it for the money? I feel sorry for you.
Just been to see Judy Collins at The Queens Hall in Edinburgh, Scotland and all were moved by this song - I had to ask Judy's pianist to remind me who wrote it. It's on the move. Peace x
I heard this song for the first time on WVNPR yesterday as I was driving home. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Amy for your spirit and for your voice.
Judy Collins just played this song at a concert on Governer's Iland in NYC. This is such a powerful song. Many of us had tears in our eyes. God bless you.
As usual, OUTSTANDING! Have been eagerly waiting for this. Hey folks, if you haven't seen Amy live yet, you are really missing something big! The song brings tears each time I hear it. I am looking forward to seeing you at Fox Run in February!
