considering how large the mushroom is the damage done to the surronding area (vault 101 and springvale) is very small and no one in the surrounding area never take note of it. It's like an everyday thing for them :/

I know because all this does is change Megaton's area and remove the entry point into the cell known as Megaton, if you have another way into Megaton via, say, a mod then everything will appear as normal, just deserted...

It was done that way to prevent or at least reduce the nuclear fallout, as 'fallout' is the radioactive matter from the crater that's launched into the air by the explosion.

It seems highly unlikely they did it in mid-air because of fallout, because at the time the effects of radiation on the human body were pretty much unknown, and fallout would have been picked up later by the fires.
