60163 Tornado, getting named, and Hauling the Royal Train 19/02/2009

Impressive project accomplished here. I would presume His Royal Highness a steam aficionado, as he sat in what I estimate to be the brakeman's seat (English locomotives have the driver at the cab left) as the train departed York; the fireman's usually standing on centerline behind the driver to stoke this 4-6-2 Darlington and keep her water injectors trimmed.

@bcschmerker yes, it was commented on that he drove it, but there is no brakeman as such, just driver, fireman and inspector. It is infact the firemans seat, but he doesn't often get to sit in it!

@bcschmerker see my point at the end where someone said There goes the future king of england driving a steam train' and my mum says 'he's driving it!' And I say 'he's not!' and my mum says 'he's not allowed is he?' (he's not) and I say 'He's sat on the wrong side!'

@yorksteam Exactly. The misinformed must have assumed that British locomotives followed American precedent, not knowing that British practice in fact has its own customs independent of U. S. and Canadian roads. An inspector in the fireman's seat has plenty of precedent on both sides of the Atlantic.

You would never see this in the USA! The Secret Service would prohibit anyone from being within a mile from the president. (Homeland Security). Long live the Queen and the Tornado!

We security for this one. We couldn't get on to the station without a ticket [for a train] and we had special passes for this one patform only. As soon as the train had left, all the securtiy dissapeared, no one checking tickets or anything!
