you just screwed up at 2:48. I'd have talked to the guard and Rand in the locker room, THEN opened the chest with the money in it. Openin the chest first screws you out of 1000 bucks cause Rand takes all your money, but if you open it after you talk to Rand, you get to keep it. Also if you have any decent amount of money after you fight Dir. H.R., Put it in the bank before you talk to Rand in the locker room or you'll lose that too.

That's temporary. Once the fights are over, you get your name back.

You should have ground up til level 8 before this. and you should have gotten all the weapon, and armor upgrades at the first town.
