dang what a wicked hearted woman she played in this film and its not the first time she's been married to him in a film and did him dirty the other one was in the letter. lol gosh
Davis is superb in this. The entire cast is impeccable.Wyler's direction is beautiful.Watch where Herbert Marshall realizes that Davis is withholding his medicine. There's an extreme close-up on his face. One would expect the same close up of Davis.Wyler was smart enough to know he didn't need it. We as an audience can see her through his eyes. It's chilling!
@Geo789C Criminal negligence can be considered murder in the US, depending on the case. This might fall under the umbrella of criminally negligent homicide, but it'd be difficult to prove in court.
yes she did. she has been killing him all along. deliberately and with malice of forethought. one of the reasons she chose him as a husband was because he was weak...the same reason her brother chose birdie. their family were the foxes...the other the grapes...do try to keep up
@Geo789C In order to decide whether she committed murder, you'd have to look at the specific law for the jurisdiction (state) where she was living at that time. The criminal laws in the US (including criminal negligence law, which was likely very undeveloped) were different then. However, the real problem is the lack of evidence against Regina - no witnesses and her husband was about to die anyway. Even his being in a wheelchair doesn't quite work, as he walked upstairs the day before.
WOW! This really and truly was one of Bette's best performances, she was always at her best playing the bitchy characters. She also said herself that she enjoyed playing them, and I think thats part of the reason why when she did her performances where so strong. I love her outfit too at 2.42, I would love to wear something like thats and live in those day, Im obsessed with this era and its fashion, I love all Bette's movies she did in the 40's the best. Bette forever, what a woman! <3
So she grows up in the deep south turn of the century. She's not allowed to earn her own living, her father dies and leaves her nothing, her brothers take it all and refuse to look after her. Sounds like a more realistic version of Sense and Sensibility. She gets married for security and for the "crime" of wanting to support herself after her husband is dead, she is forced into poverty after her husband changes his will and dies. Do they expect me to feel sorry for him? Asshole.
@J1eanCag She wanted to "support herself" by living off the back of people who weren't paid very much for a long, hard day's work. People who couldn't afford, even after working that hard, a decent place to live, food for their children or medicine when they became ill. I know only too well what people in the South went through at that time. That is the whole point of this movie - which you have clearly missed. She would have been left the house and the bonds and shares in the bank.
@J1eanCag I was thinking along similar lines. On the one hand, Horace is clearly set up as the "nice, sympathetic" guy and against the moral wrongdoings of the two brothers who rip off the poor and underpay wages; Regina is set up as the mean, frigid b****. Yet, if Regina didn't have that personality, and didn't look out for herself by marrying a relatively rich man in the first place, her brothers would have dominated her and ultimately abused her just like poor Birdie..
@J1eanCag (continued...) Regina has no other way of getting money and the life she wants except cadging it out of some man like Horace, and if he says "No" then she's stuck. It's not like she can go out and get a job, or even inherit her own money. Plus, she's going to be the one thing keeping her daughter from being forced to marry Leo or some other jerk the brothers want to do a deal with. Regina does a bad thing, but she gets a bit of an unfair shake IMHO.
this performance from davis is spellbinding. toland did such an amazing job with the cinematography (he also did Citizen Kane). absolutely awesome film -
