Hmm u know i think that creature should be called Zilla, not just cuz she nothing like Godzilla but because it sounds like a girls name, and in the movie Zilla layed eyes. Godzilla didnt lay egg cuz he a male....actually I wonder how Godzilla son came to be? Did Godzilla adopt it from the egg? Wonder how Godzilla's son came to be before the hatching?
I dont understand why everyone is so hard on this movie, its American its never gonna be what you know from Japan unless one of the actual Japanese movie makers and story writers does the movie for us. But i find this movie to be great, its fun to watch, effects were amazing, and story wise fit Godzilla. Yeah no other monster to fight but first didnt have one either.
Notice how James ends all Godzillathon with a roar from Godzilla from the movie he reviews except this one. He uses Godzilla from King vs Godzilla at the end of this video instead.......... I think we all know why.
You hit the nail right on the head with this review. If they had called the "It came from the Deep" or something, it would have been a half decent monster movie (although they would have been lambasted for ripping off Godzilla!). They tried hard to make this enormous mutation "believable" and "realistic" - that's what forced them so far from the true Godzilla.
Still the thought of introdrucing Godzilla to the USA was a good idea but it was setting up for a Cartoon aired by fox kids and yes in the Cartoon it was a hash of the final scene from the 1998 movie dont get me wrong the movie was awesome and of course Godzilla jr. was the only one who could breath fire ya think his father could but wrong too bad the cartoon only ran for 2 seasons now that sucked
The only thing about this movie that grabbed my attention was the part when the reporters are running away and the anchorman says this, and I quote,"We haven't seen destruction like this since the 9/11 attacks". WTF!?! 9/11 didn't happen until 3 yrs later! James, this movie was crap, but it also was a prequel to the worst attack the U.S. has ever had. DAMN YOU ZILLA!!!!!!!!!
ok your gonna be pissed off but theres gonna be a remake to this godzilla, BUT BEFORE YOU GET MAD there getting toho to help them create something better than this abomination, and what i hear theres gonna be mothra and king ghedora, dont worry though i heard its a guy in a rubber suit, could be cgi to help him look little more realistic, but like i said tohos helpin them!
@ghostrida1212 well it's about time this guy has less endurance than Ebirah.....and that is saying something because Ebirah was defeated by 4 human on foot, though they were mutant and this Godzilla, renamed Zilla, was defeated by three F-18s.....seriously that's really low endurance
To be fair to Zilla in the Final Wars battle, with the exception of Gigan and Monster X/Kaiser Ghidorah all monsters Godzilla fights in the movie are defeated within seconds.
Godzilla may look different, bit it looks way better than the original shitty godzilla from the 1st 15 movies. even better still than the second series

Zilla 98 is a typical Roland Emmerich movie plain an simple.

@Xstatic4208 I did. It's one of the most stupid movies I've ever seen. The president fighting on a plane? PLEASE!!! that shit makes Mars Attacks look like citizen kane.

@oblivexx Yeah, but from what I hear, they are actually working with Toho and are giving Godzilla the respect and dignity he deserves. And look at what they did with Batman. If they can get a good script and a good director, then there is hope.
As an american, I have to say this. "America NEVER looses, except when it comes to the olympics, but that's getting off topic. We make sure what fucks with us dies....dies, dies, DIESSS"
during the time this movie was made, there wasnt any dvd of godzilla. so the person that made the godzilla american version had to guess how he looked but got it wrong. thats the true story -_-
Zilla is actually a mutated marine lizard Godzilla is a mutated Godzillasuarus and if Destroyah was stronger than Godzilla and killed by the army that means Godzilla can be killed by the army like Zilla.I like Godzilla better than Zilla but everyone is saying "Zilla is stupid and ZIlla is dumb" so I'm defending her not him her because she reproduced not a male but then again Godzilla reproduced and he's a guy but in Godzilla1998 it says Zilla is a she the scientist says it.
I don't hate this movie. It wasn't that bad. I actually had every Godzilla movie that existed. I was obviously a Godzilla fan. I wish they changed this name though
I was severely disappointed when this came out. It really didn't have the Godzilla vibe that I had grown up with and the monster (which I must say, did look pretty cool) just was not what I accepted Godzilla to be. Yeah, it's a good movie, but I just can't find a place for it next to "true" Godzilla movies. :( I lol'd at the Japanese references to Zilla at the end. I didn't know about those. xD
I really liked this when it came out...then i saw godzilla and thought that was a really bad movie but the seiries was allright (he actually breathes fire in that one) soooo i thin hes totally right!
The biggest problem with the movie for me was the incredible stupidity of the military, destroying half the city and unable to find Godzilla 'hiding' in New York (wtf?), and the horrible acting all around. Roland Emmerich and Michael Bay probably get together and roll in their piles of cash while discussing their next blowing-shit-up movie.
I'm not a big fan of of Zilla, either, but it was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw. It was cool, but when I started seeing the older movie's, (first was the 54' movie, which was awesome) the Godzilla that I knew was tossed with the garbage! The 90's animated series owed WAY much more to the big G. In the series, he breaths green fire and fights a very large variety of monsters.
I actually Enjoyed the 1998 Movie Godzilla I do Agree with James as its more of a movie for fun, I am a Godzilla fan as well. Personally I prefer classic Godzilla with Zilla eh Don't really care its just a movie
the story should have been that dr. Hamond made a last experiment in which he makes a hybrid between a t-rex and a stegosaurus which escapes and swims to new york. and its a female and its partner dies on the jurassic park island because the people kill him because his to dangerous
godzilla rules, zilla sucks. zilla dosnt breath fire, godzilla does! zilla took 6 blows to the chest. a plane like that is as bis as godzilla's hand, it was as big as zilla's arm. they should have did king kong vs zilla, but even that is to much like it, its pretty much that dinosaur kong faught, just ugly! I mean just look at Final Wars, sure they beefed up zilla's size but what a waist of film!!!!!!!THATS IT! PEACE OUT JAMES :-D GODZILLA : 1954-2004
There's actually another American remake planned to come out in 2012. From what I've heard it'll stick closer to the Japanese films than the 1998 version
PS the director if the 1998 version (Roland Emmerich) admitted that he doesn't like the Japanese films!
i remember being a little kid all excited about this movie but then and even now i'm still somewhat disappointed in it because i grew up watching the originals and this one just curves to far away from it
after watching this again, zilla himself wasn't bad. he was unique and bit more realistic, the series he had made up for it. the problem was the human characters and the logic, although i'd would have liked him to breath fire. if you count zilla as a different creature then he's actually good but yeah, this movie isn't worthy of his name
Actually, I really liked the 1998 Godzilla. A lot, actually. I say the American Godzilla (Zilla) looks way cooler than the Japanese one. Zilla just looks a lot more badass. Not to mention, it takes place in Manhattan, my all-time favorite place on the globe. To me, it was really good. True, it could've been better. But horrible? I wouldn't say that.
Actually, James, in the original comics, Spider-Man can't shoot web on his own. He actually built "Web-blasters" to do so, as he felt that they'd give him both more a spider theme, and help him get around faster. The movies skipped that and just gave him built-in web-shooters. So in the comics, Spider-Man's main power was to climb, have great agility, super-strong, and all that, specifically because Stan Lee liked the idea, but thought that him shooting web out his wrists naturally was silly.Yep
I just noticed something. Before this video, you complained about the army not realizing they're ineffective against Godzilla... and suddenly they are... and you had a problem with it.
My problem is that the original Godzilla was more than just a ginat monster: He was a symbol of fear created by the atmoic bomb from the country that experienced it first hand. When Godzilla looked into the screen in the first film, I got the sense that the Japanese people were saying, "This is what you did to us, America." That was freaking powerful.
This is just a giant monster. I will give i this, though; it was better than Independence Day.
@FlyingFocs That isn't the message of the first film at all. It condemns violence and war in general, rather than one particular party. It was the stating that these were the consequences of using force as your method.
I used to be a Zilla hater for a while, but I have also gotten over it. I still cannot, for the life in me, stand Roland Emerich OR Dean Devlin. But even as a die-hard fan of the classic Toho. Godzilla, I do still love this creature- just not as Godzilla. And Toho's move to rename the creature Zilla, as well as the AWESOME animated series, helped me accept this creature as its own entity apart from Godzilla.
So with that being said, I can embrace this creature as its own separate monster.
Even though it's not really Godzilla, it's the kind of movie that you should watch just for fun. I really like how this "Zilla" really looks because it's looks more epic. To be honest, this is the only "Godzilla" that i've ever known. But I have seen the classic and it's not so bad. Still, I like this one. Click thumbs down if you want but this is the kind of movie to watch for fun.
@BlueTheArcticFox I'm a Godzilla fan and I will ban your comment. No i'm kidding, I bought the movie because I thought it was going to be an awesome CGI Godzilla movie....At first I was like, "WTF" this isn't Godzilla, but like you said, it's okay. It isn't bad, but as James said, the fact that they called it GODZILLA, and changed everything about the classic Godzilla, pissed me off. I own the movie, and to this date, it's an okay movie. As you said, it's a fun watch.
Actually in the spiderman comics Peter Parker builds the web shooters himself, rather than growing them from mutation. So I guess the whole realism them might've worked for Godzilla too but it wasn't done quite right.
Did you people even watch this video? He said the realistic and artistic interpretration reasons are horseshit. You don't make a movie with the name Godzilla unless you have its character trademarks like Atomic breath and not getting its ass kicked by the military. Artistic interpretation != a complete deconstruction
In case you hadn't noticed Cinemassacre, they were trying to make Godzilla more realistic. The Japanese Godzilla looked fake. Not just the suit but also in the actual story line. And it was was in what? 1900s? This was made in 1998, so of course the military updated and more sophisticated weaponry to take him down. Nobody cares of what you think.
I love how people always bash on newer movies because they aren't like the comics, but actually more realistic. 1998 Godzilla made by Roland Emmerich? Oh, it's nothing like the original movies, so it's bad. Ghost Rider with Nicholas Cage? Nope, not like the comics, so it's bad. Batman The Dark Knight, not like the originals, instantly bad. It's fucking interpretation, it's art! Not lets make the same movie 10,000 times with better special effects each time! DAMN!
@mechaghostman2 exactly, emmerich and company ACQUIRED the rights of godzilla, meaning that they could do anything they wanted with the character... it was their posession at the time and they did what they, as filmmakers, wanted to do, not what the fans wanted to do.... a realistic monster movie that is fun and exiting.. i bet if the movie was different "fans" would have still complained of something just because it wasn't made in japan... i feel some of this "fans" are anti-AMERICAN reboot:)
I really did think Zilla was good when I was a kid, but now that I look at it, they could have done better making it look and be like Godzilla. But, whatever.
I feel like I'm the only one that liked Godzilla 1998 or "Zilla" :/ I grew up watching that movie and yeah I did think that it looked alot like Jurrassic park but I still thought "Zilla" was awesome :D
I don't know why many Godzilla fans say that Zilla is the worst monster ever. Zilla is pretty cool and I like that he is fast and destructive even though he got taken out by 12 missiles in his debut and a single atomic breath in Final Wars.
The Movie was good but the title was terrible! I'm glad TOHO rename the movie Zilla. Zilla was a mutant do to the explosion. But this move and King Kong have a lot in common. They both Die in now your NY. They battle People, and King Kong has this movie beat. I'm just saying, Good movie, Bad Title, and Bad name. I bet TOHO was offended when this movie of kicked to the U.S.
it's funny 'cause the live action spider man movie was LESS realistic. in the comics he had mechanical web shooters. in the movie his webs were organic.
I heard that in the Godzilla 2012 remake, Godzilla will fight a monster. Well if it's true, he'd better fight King Ghidorah. Ghidorah is to Godzilla what the joker is to batman.
2. Angorious (I know I spelled that wrong but Angorious was the first monster Godzilla ever fought in Godzilla Raids Again, it would be a nice homage to finally have the rematch)
@snakes3425 Gamera is property of Daiei, Rodan began in his own movie, so did Mothra, and having Anguirus be in the remake could be a good choice, but I still think Ghidorah should be in it, and Mechagodzilla is also a good choice, but I still think Ghidorah should be in the remake.
@babybooo2 it does :) even now in 2011 some scenes still look awesome :)... however, i feel godzilla himself was better animated than his baby godzillas... the baby godzillas do look fake.
i love this movie but i remember the KFC Meal where you get a Godzilla puppet
i loved it and to tell the truth im not a Godzilla fan i remember the film and i loved it, Their was also a Song called Deeper underground sung by Jameriquore.

James, at the end you were a bit misleading.

during the time this movie was made, there wasnt any dvd of godzilla. so the person that made the godzilla american version had to guess how he looked but got it wrong. thats the true story -_-

That's a lotta fish.
I didn't know about those. xD

In the series, he breaths green fire and fights a very large variety of monsters.

godzilla rules, zilla sucks. zilla dosnt breath fire, godzilla does! zilla took 6 blows to the chest. a plane like that is as bis as godzilla's hand, it was as big as zilla's arm. they should have did king kong vs zilla, but even that is to much like it, its pretty much that dinosaur kong faught, just ugly!

PS the director if the 1998 version (Roland Emmerich) admitted that he doesn't like the Japanese films!

after watching this again, zilla himself wasn't bad. he was unique and bit more realistic, the series he had made up for it. the problem was the human characters and the logic, although i'd would have liked him to breath fire. if you count zilla as a different creature then he's actually good but yeah, this movie isn't worthy of his name

American Reboot of Godzilla is coming from Legendary Pictures though no Official release date yet it's expected 2014 for Godzilla's 60th Anniversary.
An it will be the Original Godzilla, not this 98 version.. it will have zero ties to this version.
XxComablackxX1937 1 month ago
Actually, I really liked the 1998 Godzilla. A lot, actually. I say the American Godzilla (Zilla) looks way cooler than the Japanese one. Zilla just looks a lot more badass. Not to mention, it takes place in Manhattan, my all-time favorite place on the globe. To me, it was really good. True, it could've been better. But horrible? I wouldn't say that.
Returnofthejedi1000 1 month ago
Actually, James, in the original comics, Spider-Man can't shoot web on his own. He actually built "Web-blasters" to do so, as he felt that they'd give him both more a spider theme, and help him get around faster. The movies skipped that and just gave him built-in web-shooters. So in the comics, Spider-Man's main power was to climb, have great agility, super-strong, and all that, specifically because Stan Lee liked the idea, but thought that him shooting web out his wrists naturally was silly.Yep

Does anyone really, have a problem with this Godzilla? This might not be "Godzilla"
hanjaboo 1 month ago
My problem is that the original Godzilla was more than just a ginat monster: He was a symbol of fear created by the atmoic bomb from the country that experienced it first hand. When Godzilla looked into the screen in the first film, I got the sense that the Japanese people were saying, "This is what you did to us, America." That was freaking powerful.
This is just a giant monster. I will give i this, though; it was better than Independence Day.
FlyingFocs 1 month ago
@FlyingFocs That isn't the message of the first film at all. It condemns violence and war in general, rather than one particular party. It was the stating that these were the consequences of using force as your method.
pytko3 1 month ago
@pytko3 Tru, but I do think the atomic bomb message does play a big part. Guess it's different interpretations for different people, though.

BlueTheArcticFox 1 month ago 24
@BlueTheArcticFox I'm a Godzilla fan and I will ban your comment. No i'm kidding, I bought the movie because I thought it was going to be an awesome CGI Godzilla movie....At first I was like, "WTF" this isn't Godzilla, but like you said, it's okay. It isn't bad, but as James said, the fact that they called it GODZILLA, and changed everything about the classic Godzilla, pissed me off. I own the movie, and to this date, it's an okay movie. As you said, it's a fun watch.

11338325 1 month ago
I love how people always bash on newer movies because they aren't like the comics, but actually more realistic. 1998 Godzilla made by Roland Emmerich? Oh, it's nothing like the original movies, so it's bad. Ghost Rider with Nicholas Cage? Nope, not like the comics, so it's bad. Batman The Dark Knight, not like the originals, instantly bad. It's fucking interpretation, it's art! Not lets make the same movie 10,000 times with better special effects each time! DAMN!
mechaghostman2 1 month ago
@mechaghostman2 exactly, emmerich and company ACQUIRED the rights of godzilla, meaning that they could do anything they wanted with the character... it was their posession at the time and they did what they, as filmmakers, wanted to do, not what the fans wanted to do.... a realistic monster movie that is fun and exiting.. i bet if the movie was different "fans" would have still complained of something just because it wasn't made in japan... i feel some of this "fans" are anti-AMERICAN reboot:)

I don't know why many Godzilla fans say that Zilla is the worst monster ever. Zilla is pretty cool and I like that he is fast and destructive even though he got taken out by 12 missiles in his debut and a single atomic breath in Final Wars.
ImmaPenelopePussycat 2 months ago
Zilla Jr. was the TRUE equivalent to Godzilla in the animated series; comparing to the so-called "Godzilla" who was a fake all the time.

I heard that in the Godzilla 2012 remake, Godzilla will fight a monster. Well if it's true, he'd better fight King Ghidorah. Ghidorah is to Godzilla what the joker is to batman.

@godzilla964
Top 5 Monsters who should be in the remake
1. Mechagodzilla and Ghidorah
2. Angorious (I know I spelled that wrong but Angorious was the first monster Godzilla ever fought in Godzilla Raids Again, it would be a nice homage to finally have the rematch)
3. Rodan
4. Gamera
5. Mothra
snakes3425 2 months ago
@snakes3425 Gamera is property of Daiei, Rodan began in his own movie, so did Mothra, and having Anguirus be in the remake could be a good choice, but I still think Ghidorah should be in it, and Mechagodzilla is also a good choice, but I still think Ghidorah should be in the remake.
