He was so great if you have never heard him check is how come. The poacher and ooh la la you will be hooked fantAstic he led the small faces and the faces main man
I worked for Ronnie Lane, first with the FACES then as his tour manager '74 - '77. This was the third version of 'SLIM CHANCE" circa 1975. The "lead" gutarist on the paisley telecaster is Steve Simpson - also played fiddle (in duet with Charlie hart), mandolin and was a great stage presence and a great singer. Charlie Hart is on piano. Ruan O'Lochlainne is on Hammond then sax. Brian Belshaw is playing bass on RL's original Balck Zemaitis bass. Colin Davies is on drums. I loved this live!
@urbiedurb1 Blimey! I'm sure you've a few good stories to tell! I've been a fan of Ronnie's work with the Small Faces but had never realised the stuff he had done after. I taped this performance off the OGWT when it was repeated a few years ago then lost it when i buzzed out my old video tapes. I think you can look back at this now and appreciate it – like a good wine, it matures with age. Wilko period Dr Feelgood, Nick Lowe, Ducks DeLuxe overlooked brilliance.
@urbiedurb1 That's fantastic, you must have a lot of great memories. Steve Simpson was great, as well as the rest of this particular setting of Slim Chance. It was great seeing all these wonderful musicians talk about Ronnie and Slim Chance in the great, great film The Passing Show. I'd recommend anybody to watch that documentary if you get a chance......
@urbiedurb1 You're a very lucky guy to have had that amazing opportunity to work with one of the all time greats. Well done, you must have some very special memories
Ronnie is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Trinidad, CO. Stop by and see where one of the original Mods is resting; he was a musical one of a kind. Mr. Lane left way too soon, but we do have his recordings.
@coltsever I saw in a documentry about Ronnie Lane that he was in financial troubles in the 70s. The story is he only had 8 rolls of 2" recording tape. So he would record an album, have it printed up, and then erase the tapes!! so he could record new material. So in essence there are no masters to re-issue his music on CD. The Small Faces, the Faces catalogs and the Rough Mix CD with Townshend are the only things available I believe.
@80620ash tell me what was negative! The point I was making and answering the question as to why his solo stuff had not been reissued. its because he taped over the masters. he could not afford to buy new recording tape. I personally wish they could reissue his stuff on CD. re reading my post i don't any negative comments, so i don't know what your problem is.
It is the Old Grey Whistle Test, a BBC television programme from the 70's & 80's. Some performances are available on DVD,s avaliable in most record shops, or from the BBC website.
@YouDoubtTheOz : It's incredible, isn't it!? Seeing this prompted me to rediscover the song and learn it on the guitar! Chuck wrote this beauty, but Ronnie breathed life back into it----awesome!
It is great .. and obvious .. who made the Faces .. rool & Rock ... Ronnie ... Rod & co were lucky to have this man in their band ,.,.. thanks for posting
My heart cries when I learn that Ronnie Lane is no more...! My God ..what talent! RIP Ronnie. I know that you are entertaining all in heaven with your great music. May your soul rest in eternal peace.
I often think in my mind of a dream band how he would have fit as the 5th beatle or a rolling stone? he is such a talent he truely brought the best out in anyone he played with someone not to be forgotten by millions.
Good God! Ronnie Lane was soo special! Such a sweet voice, melodic player & such a gentle dispostion on stage! He suffered such indignities within the music world & died in such a sad sad way, yet he never lost his wit, grace or class. Ronnie Lane sparkled on a stage just being there, like a rare gem in a spotlight. He was one of kind - like Marriott & he had that gypsy spirit like him too! I hope he's resting "under dreaming spires". Plonk is in my heart now & always - shine Ronnie!.
Love this version I grew up on Chuck Berry's version ,but this one is great too! Love the tempo! I learned to dance to this with my dad in our livingroom, with Chuck Berry's album on the hi-fi!! LOLWhat fun!
I can only hope we meet some time in the afterlife and you can influence me then as you do now. This is one of the greatest songs ever written (thanks Chuck. irrespective of your 'reputation') and Ronnie gets the absolute feel of the music. Love it.
Great to see musicians relaxed and having a blast like this, while still keeping it nice and tight. Been browsing through lots of Ronnie Lane's stuff and thoroughly enjoying it.
