how does it effect the sound, and how can i use it myself?

At 2:33, he's cutting the highs a little for the solo. If you look closer, there's a small switch under the tone knob. He's turning on and off the sustainer pickup at the neck, that's how he gets that amazing feedback at 2:43.

is it just an optional bounus attachment, or can you get the same effects with a sustain pedal?

It's aftermarket. It's a JS-1200 with a Sustainiac for the neck pickup. Not sure a sustain pedal would do the same, never tried one.

anybody know how hes getting the auto-tuned (yes it is auto-tune) effect here? its kinda obvious how hed get it in the studio but how is he getting it live?

@PINGPONGDYNASTY There's no real "autotune" effect when he plays live, but Joe says in interviews that he does his best to emulate the effect by really controlling his slides, slurs, vibrato, & etc. in conjuction with his wah pedal. At 1:29 he gets a nice "autotuned" sound by sliding really quickly between two notes.

What a gig! And what a song! Joe was simply amazing in Vicar Street that night, 150 mins of sheer bliss. I'm flying to Madrid & driving up to Bilbao to see him again with my brother-in-law on Nov 20th, no doubt it'll be worth the trip! I'v 4 spare seats in the car if anyone wants to join me!
