HelloHater, think about how much wrestling MMA contains. All it means is that your coaches have a similar way to prepare athletes. Both conclusions are correct.
Im srry if i dis-respect anyone but I and my team mates in high school wrestling do these types of wok outs every other day, like basicaly the same. So does that mean we're training at a pro-athelete level, or is this guy training at a high school level? idk, but think about it
One thing to remember here when talking about form is this is not a muscle building workout. He's trying to increase capacity/conditioning to minimize fatigue during a fight by recruiting the max # of muscles during the movement. That is why he is not doing isolated bicep curls and only doing compound exercises. He's working to increase his output. Most likely does a power/strength workout in a separate session. Form will suffer some, but the lighter weights used help minimize risk of injury
After circuit training for a while now I thought I could handle this...well... ACCESS DENIED. Killer routine, it's motivated me, thanks for posting it.
i think if you concentrate on just executing this workout, without paying attention to stressing the muscles particularly (like you normally do in a workout for bodybuilding), it isnt as hard as it looks. i hope you know what i mean. at bodybuilding you try to stress your muscles as much as you can. if you'd do it here, you would be crushed pretty fast i think.
I bodybuilded for about 4 years before i got in the army, and i train pretty much like this everyday now. its much more fun than bodybuilding, and waaaay more demanding. you cant even compare it.
nice video ...i like the routine.....notice how all the master trainers seem to bash on your video...dont see many videos from these so call pro s lol.....keep up the good training dude !!
For the smaller one probably somewhere between 5-10 lbs. The larger are likely between 10 and 20 lbs. It may not sound impressive, but during such dynamic movements, with almost no break-time between sets and an aim at full-body fatigue, even low weights can feel like hell. An average, unfit individual could probably do this routine with pencils instead of dumbells and still feel murdered afterward.
Nice video. The one thing I'd constructively criticize though, and I see this almost everyday with young guys in my gym, is the punching with dbs. This will SLOW YOU DOWN, not increase your speed or power. Because the dbs add resistance and slow the speed of your punches, you're actually "teaching" your muscles to punch at that slower speed. The power and speed will come as you strengthen your whole body with weights and conditioning.
Thanks for the comment. I actually agree with you, but would just like to point out your observation is debated within the research and within the field. Several studies show increased speed, but decreased force through loaded kicking. Others have shown no effect or decreased power in loading extremities. However, the loaded punches were meant to produce the "lead arm" feeling of a fight not to work on speed/power which is done separately through explosive Olympic style training.
Word. Proper form, shadow boxing, and speed bag will do more for hand speed. Having a band that pulls your punch out faster will do the opposite of dumbbells and teach your neurological system how fast it can actually go if it wants.
umm how long is each station and is MMA mostly or more most upper body strength because i see alot of it, and how much are those weights(And we feel your pain :)
this guy is growing a arch on his upper back LMFAO! He needs to do workouts properly with good posture. Instead of working out his back properly he just works out his upper back LOL!
These workouts look good but only if you do it properly.
I totally agree with ur comment Underwrarwhere it would be more beneficial to do say one good pushup than 5 pissy ones you still work hard GOOD POSTURE all the way...
Perfect posture is a great idea if you want even muscle tone, but most fighters are obviously not fully ambidexterous, and this IS an MMA training routine. His pushup form is sacrificed because he obviously favors one arm over the other, but it shouldn't be detrimental since he's likely going to favor punches with that arm for ground-and-pound as well. Letting his form slip/shake also forces his lungs to work a bit harder against unsmooth movements, which also replicates fight trauma.
yeah, most circuit training alone challenegs you more metabolically than it does muscularly. it's a great way to train anaerobic endurance, but i'm guessing that most fighter's include days of regular strength and power training in their regimen.
lol... yeah dude, that's just 'cause Silva's a fucking monster and he just destroys people. there's not much you can do about someone with natural skill like that. i'm excited to see his upcoming fight!
Genetics. Silva, St. Pierre, Rickson, Jordan, these guys are set apart by Genetics, there is nothing than can beat Genetics, well, a .45 maybe. Good workout!! Peace.
will people please shut up about genetics there is no such thing as an mma genetic something taht makes you a natural mma fighter those guys are how they are because of there training and determination
no i said it doesent make you a fighter if you have genetics to make you fast and strong but you cant hav ones that make you punch of grapple better than everyone else who doesent train
I bet I can do this workout. Im not bragging or puting anyone down, but i think i could murder that workout. With lesser weights id guess, im only 165, but i think i could murder circuits like that.
Hill sprints is a key in anaerobic training. This stuff is good, but try doing 5 sets of 90 yard up hill soft sand wind sprints.
That will have your lungs puking out of your body. Try it out. Its a real man exercise, like this one. I like it. Gave me more ideas.
yeah, that's what it's all about...not necessarily doing this exact workout, but pulling ideas from it, hopefully learning something new from it and incorporating that into your workout.
This is sick!!! Conditioning Coach doing the count is on point! Sounds like part of the song! I want him as MY coach!!! Or I'd like to burn this and use it as my workout audio. :) Very professionally done!
its funny how ppl criticise the MMA circuit routines.. "this sucks, not proper form etc,etc.." "learn proper form" LOL this IS MMA training.. not body building.. these movements don't injure.. they emulate fighting movements.. and these training movements use all the same muscles you would use in a fight..when these fighters are doing isolated weight lifting, ofcourse they use proper form..another exercise that emulates fighting is tyre throwing.. and hitting tyres with slegde hammers..

I am not a big fan of kettlebells for lots of reasons. First, there is nothing you can do with a kettlebell that you cant do with a dumbbell. Second, I have never really heard anyone make a strong argument for their advantage. and last they are a lot more expensive than dumbbells. It is only my opinion, but I seriously cannot thing of valid reason for thei use over a traditional DB.
If you are trying to build size, I would opt for some of the slower ME focused workouts like the monster set, or the 4 sets by 12 reps circuit. You could incorporate a workout like this one twice a week keeping the weights like and using it more for endurance training while lifting heavy and slower 2-3 other days
I could not disagree more. We have discussed this in other areas on this video and while form in certain workouts (i.e. for power, hypertrophy is good) we are trying to challenge the body in awkward and disordered ways to simulate a fight......i.e., what is the proper form to pick someone up and slam them o the mat? You need to be strong and flexible and resilient in all areas and you cant develop that unless you challenge the body in this way.
I can't believe this guys endurance, unreal, i hope some day i can be like that, i have strength but what is strength without endurance when it comes to martial arts... nothing
This is TRUE Strength & Conditioning...No show ponies here.
I'm a NASM CPT with a MMA background and since 2003 I've trained more for functional strength and endurance; I like many was ignorant and limited my training to hyperthory AKA 'Meat Training'...My first day in class change my views for ever.
do you have anymore training videos like this.. 10 out of 10..this guy is super fit.. fitness trainer is really getting into it. I train professional tennis players and want them to do this type of training.. need a good warm up before working to this intensity..This guys Vo2 max would be incredible..Have you tested it on a machine...
Additionally, when you're muscles are near the exhaustion point and you're trying to squeeze those last few reps in are the times when you are much more likely to get injured. Tonic muscles that are mainly responsible for keeping correct biomechanical movement are recruited from the increased need due to fatigued primary movers and synergists. When this happens, is when you blow out a disc or sprain a knee of elbow. This guy shows pretty damn impressive form even under fatigue.
I've seen some talk about good vs. bad form and while compromising form may help build strength and endurance for the fight, it will have a tendency to take a toll on your body in many ways. Repetetive movements, especially under stress that are not biomechanically sound are going to cause damage and not 'desired' damage as with the microtears in generating muscle strength. Of course, the sport (MMA) is very hard on the body, so perhaps the short term sacrifice is moot.
Muscle endurance. See if you can find Brock Lesnar's prefight routine. He does like 5x5 minute rounds in a row and nearly all the exercises he does are body weight or light weight (15 lb single arm sledge swings). Likewise, find Anderson Silva's training. He's doing 45 degree presses with what looks like a 45 lb bar max. Anymore you see a lot of work with tractor tire flips, sledge swings, kettle bells and medicine balls.
cheers man, those would be the best motivational workout songs i have heard lol. That's some good functional training by the way, machine weights suck in my opinion.
I wish I had a person to push me like the guy recording, I have decided to workout by myself now because any lifting partners I had would always fucking talk. It would take like 15-20 minutes to do three sets. Now that I workout by myself i get like about 2 exercises per 10/15 minutes.
the goal is to push yourself till you have to use cheat reps.. you should totally tax your body. proper form is secondary.. you want your technique TO BE comprimised because in a fight you are in many different positions and your body is turned and twisted in every postition so you cant exactly worry about proper form when your getting punched in the face or slammed on your back..
this is a workout to build the Anerobic and Aerobic systems to withstand the vigirous unorthodox activity of a fight... this isnt a work out to look pretty... that is why cheat reps and half reps are used...
cosign that-- ultra-precise movement is of less import than vigorous violent movement-- "proper" form is an artificial construct anyhow, so if done purposefully and properly, deconstructed movement form can be of far more use than "correct" form.
check out Steve Cotter doing 5 continuous single leg squat jumps to a table and then tell me his form is bad [like an 'expert' recently did]-- form wasn't his objective-- ultra capacity was.
Great stuff. I been working a similar workout to increase anaerobic endurance. You can never be bored with this type of workout. Perhaps i'll record and post as comment.
Anyone interested in some really challenging conditioning routines should check out Ross Enamait's stuff.
To the guy in the vid: you might want to work a little on your technique with the pushups (go deeper, keep neck straight) and the squats/deadlifts (bend at knee, not lower back).
He had poor posture through out the whole workout. I wouldnt be surprised if this guy has muscular imbalances that could eventually lead to injuries.

Thanks for the comments

I've seen some talk about good vs. bad form and while compromising form may help build strength and endurance for the fight, it will have a tendency to take a toll on your body in many ways. Repetetive movements, especially under stress that are not biomechanically sound are going to cause damage and not 'desired' damage as with the microtears in generating muscle strength. Of course, the sport (MMA) is very hard on the body, so perhaps the short term sacrifice is moot.

quality work out! wat weights are your dumbells at each stage
bradtaz 3 years ago
weights range between 15 lbs on the low end and 35 lbs on the high end for this workout
jadeteta 3 years ago
alot of the reps are half asses but i guess after a few weeks of doing this every other day it would get easier and easier

This guy has got immense conditioning! Great endurance workout.
ROSSDEE1 3 years ago
How much does this guy bench? And do you think strength or muscle endurance is more important in MMA?
DistantZeal 3 years ago
Muscle endurance. See if you can find Brock Lesnar's prefight routine. He does like 5x5 minute rounds in a row and nearly all the exercises he does are body weight or light weight (15 lb single arm sledge swings). Likewise, find Anderson Silva's training. He's doing 45 degree presses with what looks like a 45 lb bar max. Anymore you see a lot of work with tractor tire flips, sledge swings, kettle bells and medicine balls.

Eric Seely a DJ and trainer from NYC did these tracks for us. He is very talented. He has a myspace page where you can contact him.

cheers man, those would be the best motivational workout songs i have heard lol. That's some good functional training by the way, machine weights suck in my opinion.

the first work out looks like a work out to practice break dancing moves

I wish I had a person to push me like the guy recording, I have decided to workout by myself now because any lifting partners I had would always fucking talk. It would take like 15-20 minutes to do three sets. Now that I workout by myself i get like about 2 exercises per 10/15 minutes.

You will get a lot more out of this workout if you use better technique.
GLang253 3 years ago
the goal is to push yourself till you have to use cheat reps.. you should totally tax your body. proper form is secondary.. you want your technique TO BE comprimised because in a fight you are in many different positions and your body is turned and twisted in every postition so you cant exactly worry about proper form when your getting punched in the face or slammed on your back..
armloc5 3 years ago
this is a workout to build the Anerobic and Aerobic systems to withstand the vigirous unorthodox activity of a fight... this isnt a work out to look pretty... that is why cheat reps and half reps are used...
armloc5 3 years ago
nothing pretty about this workout. it gets the job done and gets you on top in a fight. ;) great stuff.
Hector2028 3 years ago
cosign that-- ultra-precise movement is of less import than vigorous violent movement-- "proper" form is an artificial construct anyhow, so if done purposefully and properly, deconstructed movement form can be of far more use than "correct" form.
check out Steve Cotter doing 5 continuous single leg squat jumps to a table and then tell me his form is bad [like an 'expert' recently did]-- form wasn't his objective-- ultra capacity was.

This routine is designed to increase both aerobic and anaerobic endurance
jadeteta 3 years ago
Great stuff. I been working a similar workout to increase anaerobic endurance. You can never be bored with this type of workout. Perhaps i'll record and post as comment.

Nice.
Anyone interested in some really challenging conditioning routines should check out Ross Enamait's stuff.
To the guy in the vid: you might want to work a little on your technique with the pushups (go deeper, keep neck straight) and the squats/deadlifts (bend at knee, not lower back).
Good circuit, though!
