  • The way they speak of America is the way I feel about the United Kingdom. I'm hoping to study there next year, and I really don't know how I'll ever leave if I make it there.

  • @royalgirl31. You can have Hugh Laurie back if you keep Madonna. Not that we don't like Hugh Laurie, we like him very much. We just hate Madonna more.

  • Why would British be embarrassed?? There's a ton of nations out there which you might feel embarrassed about as a citizen, but Britain, as most other countries which have formed from their former empire, certainly is none of them.

  • So fascinating --- as an American, I feel the same sort of regard for Canada and the UK as they are expressing for America. Wonderful countries.

  • americans are/were optimists

  • What about Canada? Were we not a post Enlightenment colony with immigrants that came here by choice?

  • Why the hell are there all these sexy legs links in the related videos? i'm not complaining, just curious.

  • Thank you so much for the upload!

  • How nice just for once to hear Craig not interrupt the guest constantly to make the audience laugh. And he's not being afraid to sound intelligent for once either. Don't get me wrong, I love the funny Craig too, but this is a wonderful interview.

  • that is terrible theory mr Fry ... Its all about social classes, people that emigrate are the people that isn't doing well in their native countries, mostly financially... so poor or low classes people imigrate. So far from the "happy people theory, who refuses to be "doomed"... that's just ridiculous, mr fry..!

  • @plstrom So Craig Ferguson is one of these poor / low class people? Hugh Laurie? Anthony Hopkins? Tom Jones?

  • @mocyoung wow! 3 ppl ! exactly, allmost the intire americas population... is it all you can think of ? idiot

  • @plstrom three examples. There are many many more I'm sure.

  • @plstrom Your argument can be mutually returned to you and against you. Certainly, you must understand that there are several eras of immigration boasting varied immigrants of different statures, wealth, and capabilities. Indeed one can infer that the majority are poor and downtrodden but Stephen Fry simply stated that there is a theory and consequently described it and agreed to it to an extent. Even so, I too, to an extent, agree. After all, character is unique to the individual.

  • @purdudan And mind me, he did state that it was simply a beguiling idea, and indeed it is.

  • HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE THIS?

  • I like to think of myself as a very articulate, literate person, yet every time I watch Stephen Frye I know to keep a dictionary handy because he challenges my vocabulary and that is one of the reasons I LOVE watching him.

  • I'm rewatching this for the third time probably and just started laughing uncontrollably when Craig said 'you have a place here' Stephen & Geoff need to meet.

  • By him i mean Stephen of course.

  • While I do agree with him that in general America is a great country and that the people there are more optimistic i would also like to point out that he is a result of his life and experiences many of which happened in Britain so we must have done something right somewhere along the line.

  • wait... i must be lost.. this is a weird set up interview and stuff... why arent they at the desk or anything?

  • I'd give anything to have one hour alone with Stephen to talk about Bipolar.

  • @tom80cruse wow, shows what you know

  • @tom80cruse Pussy.

  • @tom80cruse "they all seem like the young bully kids in movies" try a better source of information like a book or a travelling perhaps.

  • @tom80cruse aah yeah, how grown up of you pointing out ad hominem bullshit on an entire nation.

U are probely a fat warmongering ignorent piece of shit yourself, u know like ALL americans are.

  • Yeah you dont know shit. dude Some of the nicest people I have ever met were british people and they are genuinly nice unlike the fake nice that most americans put on. Im american Ive been to new york california all the big states and cities and they are all fake. British people seem geniune when they ask a question, like how was your day or are you ok? They mean it. I would say the only people who has that kind of geniune attitude in the US is the people in the south and rural midwest areas.

  • @scienceatheism- I highly doubt you've met "most" Americans. Many does not equal most. I'm sure people like Stephen and Craig have met many more than you and they seem to be pleased and not bitchy.

  • Man watching this makes me depressed at how I'm on the wrong side of the pond.

  • I am so absolutely proud of being American right now. But you guys know what? I was thinking about this the other day. If I had to be born anywhere, I would choose America. There are many things I don't agree with here, and there are many things I'd like to change. But of my very small traveling experience, I have never met people (as a whole) who appreciate individuality, who are optimistic, who are open-minded, who are friendly as Americans.

  • @jypsyjulia Or who are as xenophobic?

  • @toppaz79 Clearly you've never been to parts of Asia.

  • @jypsyjulia Got a frosty reception in Vietnam did you?! Haha.

  • @toppaz79 XD Vietnam is actually not a place I've been able to go to yet, but I do want to.

  • @jypsyjulia Pretend to be Canadian! The point I was making though, is that it's very easy to be 'proud' of where you come from (when would anyone not be proud of where they came from?!), to consider your own country 'best' or to make crude cultural judgements. In reality it's all meaningless. There are good people, there are bad people. There are optimists, there are pessimists. Nationality has nothing to do with it. Comforting to know that occasionally even Stephen Fry can talk utter shit.

  • @toppaz79 Oh, I see. I wasn't trying to make a crude cultural judgement, if that's what you think. I agree wholeheartedly with your statement, but I didn't used to be proud of where I came from. That's why I posted that comment - he opened my eyes to the good in America and I was also thinking earlier that day that I like the individuality I see in this country. (versus some uniformity I've seen in others, but actually both can be good things.) Do the Vietnamese hate Americans so much!?LOL!

  • @jypsyjulia Well you did say that Americans are the most friendly and open-minded people on the planet..... thats a huge sweeping statement. I've met some extremely friendly Americans but It's wrong to lump everyone together and say.. for the most part Americans are this or that... that just simplistic nonsense. As for this video, I really think stephen fry has a schizophrenic attitude to Englishness .... and his views on American 'positive' genetics were laughable!

  • @toppaz79 Hm, well IN MY OPINION, Americans are the most friendly and open-minded people I've encountered. Now, be a 21 year old I really haven't travelled to all that many places, but I am standing by that statement. I didn't say Americans were the most friendly people in the world, but I said they were the most friendly that I've ever met. As a country, I think that we're pretty open and friendly. Are there other countries like this? YES! I LOVED Russia! They're so hospitable.

  • @toppaz79 "schizophrenic attitude to Englishness" - that just made me laugh, I like the way you worded it. I actually don't know much about his attitude towards his birth land, but I hope he doesn't become an American. Wasn't he named the Gem of England? or something like that? I think that he should own that title and he is so perfectly English (to the American, anyway).

  • @jypsyjulia Oh he'd never become an American... what a Brit says on US TV, and what they actually think, are two different things! ..............Unless your name is Russell Brand or Ricky Gervais.

  • Lovely explanation of how America's white population made the "choice" to move!

  • As an American, the phrase, "Only in America!" was forever spoiled for me when Dubya used it in reference to a mother of a disabled child who was working 3 jobs to keep kith & kin together.

  • Whenever I'm having a truly bad day I go back and watch this whole interview and it helps

  • really cool to hear to Englishmen describe what it is I like about America. Especially because most brits would die before they admit admiration :)

  • @jb2lk

If don't wish to piss off a Scotsman, I suggest you avoid accusing him of being an Englishman!

  • I missed out the word "you", but I'm sure you still follow me

  • I want to move to America.

  • An "emotional whumphf" is one of the best explanations I've ever heard.

  • Watching this now made me laugh when Stephen said he had a place in New York. Made me think about Geoff's places all around the world:D

  • Stephen and Craig are bang on right about national attitudes. As a fellow Brit, I can endorse wholeheartedly that our basic state as a nation is slightly apologetic shame, and an ability to find fault with almost everything. We are the glass-half-empty nation.

  • you can't do this sort of thing with most celebrities, they don't have interesting things to talk about

  • "It is America, and you have to have commercials." LOL!

  • It makes me feel proud, as an American, to hear non-Americans talk like they do about American pride and optimism. Something this nation could use a little more of in the recent years.

  • Pride in America oh yes I have pride I have family there

  • This is one of the best interviews to ever be on american television,

  • Ok hearing Stephen talking about Britain like this makes me slightly sad, I hope that there are at least some things he loves about it, and that he doesn't move to America. They already have Hugh Laurie! Quick BBC, up his wages for QI!!

  • @royalgirl31 Dont worry, we could never forget about how beloved britain though we make speak ill of her on occasion, we simply hide our true love to protect it... I think :)

  • @royalgirl31 Of course he does! He's a Brit through and through when it comes to it. He's just describing a particular mindset of two countries, don't take it as his end all opinion on the countries.

  • @royalgirl31 Thumbs down.

  • I want Craig's mug

  • i think it's really sweet the way Stephen and Craig see America. it's moments like that which make me fairly proud to be American. yeah, we're pretty messed up but it's really nice to have (originally) foreigners say kind words about us.

  • @alixinthemiddle i agree with you so much. whenever i hear a politician say something about america being "the best country on this planet THAT THERE EVER WAS" or something similarly ridiculous and hyperbolic, i tend to roll my eyes. but hearing stephen and craig's praise makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and "aw shucks, guys."

  • @spoinklesprouts

it's because they're sweet and sincere and clever guys. if they like us, we must be doing -something- right!

  • stupendous interview!!

  • Well Stephen; I have an argument for your "Only in America..." bit:

Only in America... do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

Us Americans can be ridiculous and stupid, because that's a lot of what comes from people who are willing to take risks.

  • @Kakuoteyalu You say we're stupid for buying hotdogs in packages of 10 and buns in packages of 8, yet it was the brilliance of American marketing professionals and food distributors that came up with the scheme to force consumers to buy 2 packages of buns for one package of hotdogs . Don't you wonder why every brand of bun makers has seemingly followed suit... because they make more MONEY.

  • @cutapacka4 I'm American too, and what's kind of ridiciculus is that we have yet to pubically demand the same number of hot dogs and buns/bag.

  • @Kakuoteyalu Yeah, it is I guess, but how the hell can we publicly demand something like that? I guess people could boycott buns or something... lol

  • @cutapacka4 We could, but what I mean is that we don't complain or talk about it as much as we should. It's only stupid in that we put up with it.

  • The theory that America is made up of people who take risks and seek glory is fascinating. I've never thought about that, but it seems amazingly plausible.

  • I think partially what he says is true, but America is also ridden with deep conservatism and religious nutjobs. Not all are forward thinkers, Stephen.

  • It took Stephen Fry to make me say to myself "Yeah, America is actually a darn good place for those who are open-minded"

  • I love Stephen Fry but I wish he would stop slagging off the British when he's interviewed in America.

  • @estebanrey But that would be unpatriotic.

  • them talking is kind of like watching a dance, you don't care what they say but the accents, the tone, the movements are just fascinating

  • @rosati222 - why are they brown nosers?

  • love them

    so f'n brilliant

  • Gauh! I just love watching them talk together! I am so fascinated!

  • *hides a small grin at the drunken Craig, at the start* ^_^

  • @OcularPolitics Yeah you can often tell in the older clips about how out of it that Craig is. That is why I say that he looks better today than he did back then.

P.S. I would love to have seen the entire clip of that "roast" or whatever it is (actually the entire program if it is possible)

  • @OcularPolitics drugged

  • thank you Malinky! I love Stephen Fry.
