@r1killen If you have ever visited that island in Thailand, you would not have made that comment :) That island has a very narrow strip in the middle--only a few hundred yards at most from the front beach to the back beach... it looks somewhat like a watch glass in the middle. That was where the hotel and most everything else on that island were located. If he were to step away from that hotel, he would have been swept off to the ocean on the other side of the island.

this is a huge wave... it maybe wouldnt be considered so massive if it was a normal wave that stops at the beach... but a tsunami, no matter how short it is, wont stop at the beach, itll keep coming inland.
Well it wouldn't have been such a big issue if it was just water. The rubble and stuff in the water is most of the trouble. If it were to be just water one could for example jump in from the hotel room and just wait till the water retreats. People at sea can survive quite long like that. But the buildings and the stuff in the water that's what was so fatal. And.. And of course short after the breaking of the wave, people who were too close to the breaking point of the original 'water wall'.
sure the rubble and debris, broken buildings ect. were a huge part of the damage... but im gonna have to disagree with you when you say the water alone wouldnt have been that big of a deal. that much ocean coming that fast into the land, even without debris, is still going to clear most if not everything off the map.
Well.. when you can see the first part of the wave.. it isn't that huge.. in fact at the point where the wave has reached the hotel.. without the hotel and trees standing in the way.. (so it is in theory not in reality) People would just have been taken away by the first part of the wave and would have been taken away in front of the big part of the wave.. The chances of survival would have been much bigger. Sure.. the big part of the wave the 'water wall' No chances of surviving That.
By the way When there would have been no buildings there.. than there would be (close to) no people there either. So then there wouldn't have been so many victims.. but of course that's in theory.

this is a huge wave... it maybe wouldnt be considered so massive if it was a normal wave that stops at the beach... but a tsunami, no matter how short it is, wont stop at the beach, itll keep coming inland.

Well it wouldn't have been such a big issue if it was just water. The rubble and stuff in the water is most of the trouble. If it were to be just water one could for example jump in from the hotel room and just wait till the water retreats. People at sea can survive quite long like that. But the buildings and the stuff in the water that's what was so fatal. And.. And of course short after the breaking of the wave, people who were too close to the breaking point of the original 'water wall'.

sure the rubble and debris, broken buildings ect. were a huge part of the damage... but im gonna have to disagree with you when you say the water alone wouldnt have been that big of a deal. that much ocean coming that fast into the land, even without debris, is still going to clear most if not everything off the map.

Well.. when you can see the first part of the wave.. it isn't that huge.. in fact at the point where the wave has reached the hotel.. without the hotel and trees standing in the way.. (so it is in theory not in reality) People would just have been taken away by the first part of the wave and would have been taken away in front of the big part of the wave.. The chances of survival would have been much bigger. Sure.. the big part of the wave the 'water wall' No chances of surviving That.
