I have always wondered why someone hasn't used EFI and timed the delivery after the cylinder clears the exhaust port on the compression stroke, this would effectively solve the unburnt hydrocarbon problem.
When I think of the HP to kg ratio it amazes me that someone would actually want a 4 stroke, or even worse a V twin.
They do now, and have emissions below the 4 strokes. Relioability is still the stumbling block, as for cars and such, they have a 100,000 mile minimum durability test, that's hard to do with big holes in the cylinders. I think we will see more 2 stroke out there.....
@johnnydanger57 I found out about a company called Engineering Envirofit that is using compressed air in the injector to better atomize fuel and won an SAE award for their work.
If you get a chance check out the Two Stroke Shop TSS in Queensland, they are dedicated fans.
@Zyworski Check out what BRP has done with their 2 strokes in the last few years. I own a snowmobile with a 160HP direct injected 800cc 2-stroke twin in it, as well as 2 Evinrude 2-strokes. They make crazy power and use hardly any oil. Just have to wait and see how long they hold together
@Zyworski It is called Direct Injection. Mercury, Evinrude and Yamaha have DI 2-stroke boat engines. Ski-Doo has a DI 2-stroke snowmobile(Evinrude tech). Ossa now has a port fuel injected trials bike and semi-direct injected enduro bike. Athena just unveiled a DI cylinder kit they were working on.
@powertowieght100 I guess it really matters what you like and how much money you have. I like them all but I guess mabye I just was partial to his H2 . I love the twostrokes !! all of them. Wanna check out something interesting ? Kawasaki H2 750 dragbike . I think that bike runs ok for a kawasaki LOL !!
I have 109 HP on my old 1998 2 stroke twin snowmobile engine but it ( is liquid cooled) has 2 into 1 pipe with big carbs, jetted, and pipe made for trails. Twin pipes make like115 HP. I'd think you could get a little more mare than 80 HP at the motor with that even though it's air cooled.
This wasn't a "maxed out" motor, And your "old" 98 motor is "newer" by 30 years.... :-) That's huge as far as development goes, especially with 2 strokes. Early 90's GP 500 motors were putting out over 200 hp at the rear wheel, and that's just from the technology in the last 3 decades. I have built a bit hotter motor that put out just over 84 at the rear wheel, and I'm sure 100 is possible, but it would be pretty high strung.......
@powertoweight100 Amazingly, the H2R's were competitive with the TZ 750 for a while, but you can't beat water cooling and the extra rpm afforded by 4 cylinders.
@powertoweight100 Ummmm I'm confused. Why are we talking about H2's here. Is that what this bike is? No. I had a buddie that had a couple of H2's and I use to get to ride them. One of them was built ! But if you say they have no power and that an RD500 or a TZ750 would have beat his bike, I guess you are intilted to your own Way of thinking. And as far as new bikes today .. they are retarded , and you know what I mean by that.I would like to see some of these kids today hop on any of the above!
@MrDantheman45 First off I never said that the H1 500 in this video was a H2 kawi. I said the H2 was underpowered. Yes I do think RD500 and TZs are better bikes and my opinion will not change, I also like RGV 500 Gamma. There is one on you tube pushing 145HP can your buddies H2 out run that?
@powertoweight100 Ummm I'm confused. Why are we talking about H2's here. Is that what this bike is? No. I had a buddie that had a couple of H2's and I use to get to ride them. One of them was built ! impressive, but you can tell from the engine note it isnt in a very high state of tune, 100bhp could easily be achieve from that. gotta love that 2 stroke crackle. ride on.
87rwhp is about all you can do on the 500 and have it still "useable" for road racing. You "might" get 100 rwhp out of a drag race set up on a 500. I can give some of the "mid/back pack" modern 600's fits sometimes at the track..... ;-)
For the street, but on the track, an "exposive" power band is not good on skinny vintage tires, and you end up on your butt! And actually have slower lap times.
what makes it crap is not really the engine itself. its the POS carb they put on it. it leaks fuel all the time, either floods like crazy or starves. the gurtner carb is just absolute junk no matter how much i clean it or try to tune it.
the engine i have no problems with, 133 for compression and it was seized a few years back and still runs fine (when the carb works that is)
as for the bike itself, just utter crap. every time i ride it something breaks or falls off.
yes the carb is problematic. because it has an all brass float that even one spec of dirt makes it leak, so you need to keep it super super clean, but aslong as you do that its ok, i always pulled the fuel shutoff when i was done with it, the bike itself(my model atleast) is great, very durable, no shocks, mine is like a bicycle, nothing falls of at all, the light is loose and needs to be tightened offen but other than that its a great reliable bike, just dirt slow, like a gas mobility scooter
the float on mine is plastic with a brass needle that can be adjusted up or down. i had 2 fuel filters on it and it still gave me problems after the 25 times i took it apart and cleaned it spotless. even with the fuel shutoff mine still leaks fuel into the engine.
when i get the money im gonna spend the 75 bucks on a new aftermarket carb and get a new back tire tube.
what size tires do you have? if you have the 23x2.00 tires than standard kenda 20" downhill mountain bike tubes work, real cheap fix, you know almost any carb will work on there? even one from an old lawn boy, just make sure its jetted properly and check the plug to make sure its not to lean,
also you have the new carb, my carb the entire float is brass and unadjustable, its the french, they cant do things normally! but the engine is bullet proof, they just suck at making carburators,
It's all relative raketti. The first motorcycles had 4 or 5 hp. We are talking 40 years of development, since these 500's came out in 1969. And take the new liter bikes, they are putting out 175ish RWHP. That's over double the HP, but also double the displacement. So it's not really that much different.
you know whats shitty, my 900cc cruiser. tops out at about 115, down hill, wind at my back. 110 on that bike. damn. I believe it too. I GOT RID OF MY STUPID CRUISER> GOING SPORTBIKE !!! thats a sweet bike
I would have to disagree. The center cylind problem is a "wives tale", it's the outer 2 cylinders that usually "go". The oil pumps are 99.9% reliable. it's usually the one way valves that can stick or the cable tab that breaks off that causes oiling problems. And like any motor, how long it "lasts" depends on how hard you run it. I have heard of Kaw triple motors going 80,000 miles without a rebuild.
well beside being a 3 cycl 2 stroke they were the fastest bike on the planet(production wise) in the 1/8 mile only to be out done by them selvs later they mad a 750 triple that was even faster
A few special things. Basically the first "superbike". Kawasaki built them to become know to the american public in the 60's and 1/4 was king. They were the quickest. Then the 750s came out in 72 and they were the quickest.
Like all older vehicles, their performance pales in comparison to the new bikes.
Not necessarily. I'll grant you that these street machines can't keep up with newer ones, but that's not the case in all vehicles. For example, you can take the most beastly of modern motocross machines and put it on the line with a 1981 Maico 490 and nine times out of ten, the Maico will get to the first turn before the modern machine. This comes with the same suspension travel and the same weight, give or take ten or so. The old drum brakes are the only major issue.
I was talking over all performance..... ;-) I can lap the track here faster than some new "crotch rockets", but with a good rider, they kick my butt. Just as the Maico (or other old bikes) might make it to the first corner, they most likely won't be close to winning the race againt the new dirt bikes.......
I'm talking about overall performance, too. Handling and suspension have been improved a bit, but not all that much. My dad was once getting a little tired of a friend doing his whole "big bad new bike" routine on his YZ450F, so on one corner, he took his Maico 500 to the limit on power, handling, braking and acceleration and left the YZ far, far behind. The YZ also ended the ride with cracked rims, while the Maico did not. The Yamaha currently has a blown transmission, the Maico does not.
I graduated from High School in the San Francisco area in 1973. I had a friend who had a white 500 and another friend who had a 750. The sound was great.
no turbo because 2stroke need almost no exhaust resistance to fully hit power band ....but a pulley driven supercharger would work and probably really good
RESPECT!! I've got 2 stroke cars at home as well as a bike.. The problem is the politicians dont like the 2 - 4 % oil petrol mix cause of a tiny bit of blue smoke when they start up. But surly its diesel that should be band - you only have to follow one a short while before you fell unwell. Out of interest back in the 50s a bloke called Walter Karden made a 2 stroke with a carb and no supercharger, it made 200BHP PER LITRE!!! (not possable to turbo a 2 stroke cause ofback pulse in exhaust)
all the rest of the oil companies that produce 2 STROKE oil have to be eviromentaly friendly.
Companies that DO NOT produce friendly two stroke engine oil, should not be allowed to sell. (regulation should be that strict) Replace the oil NOT THE 2 STROKE ENGINE!!!
TWO STROKE ENGINE IS VERY EFFICIENT AND VERY LOW MAINTENACE! IT'S SIMPLY GREAT!!
I think you caught the end of the comments. The GP 500's were putting ut over 200 rwhp, mine is a 33 year old modded street motor, only 70 rwhp, but still a blast!
70rwhp out of a half liter engine. that's at least 140 shp / liter. N/A 4strokes can barely keep up even when totally tricked out. If I'm worng, oh well, but I thought the record for 4-strokes was like 120hp/L for non forced induction (and no NOS!) I could just imagine what a 1 liter turbo 2-stroke could do :) (not by forcing the pressure through the crankcase either)
Just for comparison, at the end of the 500 2 stroke Gp racing, the factory racers were "tame" enough to ride on the street at low throttle openings, but peak rear wheel horsepower was around 210-220. One of the reasons The first Moto GP 4 strokes were 990cc's was because they wanted to make sure they could beat the 500's that were still legal for a few years.
Awesome! 200+rwhp... Even turbo and super'd 4strokes have a hard time matching that. I have a design I would like to make someday. This may sound sick, but it's a 13 liter 2-stroke v8, direct injected and either turbo or supercharged induction with dry sump lubrication. It fits in the same volume as a small block chevy, is lighter, has less gaskets, and far less moving parts. it would be a modernized stroker...
Damn, pull the clutch in after you let off the gas! These bikes do not tolerate screaming revs with the throttle closed. Suprized it didnt "squeak"! Remember lube is proportional to throttle position on these old triples! Bike sounded good though.
That's a big NO-NO on Kaw triples, the clutch rods will friction weld together and sometimes weld to the input shaft. Unless you have a roller pusher conversion, which I don't. And it's a brake dyno anyway, which you really have to have with triples.
i supprised you didnt blow it up.. alot of 2strokes blow up on the dyno because the drum keeps spinning and the wheel and the cylender cant get luberiaction
Ive always been told not to chop off on the throttle on my ktm 200sx, when the carb is closed quickly at high rpm the engine draws less fuel mixture through thus getting less oil when it needs it most.
wow! that is verry impressive power. The engines look so little and I'm sure they don't weigh much either. It's amazing the output from these engines. The one in this vid looks like it runs well too. I'm sure it'd be fun to ride.
don't know what year etc. but there were 4 3cyl 2 stroke bikes at my loval dragstrip running in the 9's in the quarter mile. mean as hell and sound wicked too.
They are still racing them. They are trying to break into the 7's this year. They are very close. The last dyno run I saw was 223 hp at the countershaft. These are 750's of course..... ;-)
yes they do have a power band and that is the reason they stopped makin the bike .. too many people flipping on the highway that and the inner cylinder would over heat but god do I want another
did they really stop making 2 stroke bikes ??? even dirt ones.. I didnt know that.. But 4 strokes are more reliable and the power is near compreable may be the reason no oil mixing and all that
they have banned the import of 2 strokes in the US for emmissions or so they say but give me a break ... bikes like lawnmowers dont even have to go thru emmissions test.. it breaks down in my opinion, 2 strokes have 3 moving parts as oppossed to a 4 stroke which has i think like 36 parts to be replaced.. that and whiney Mom types that didnt like the sound if a 2 stroke zipping up n down the street
no they stopped making 2s because of the environment, but who gives a shit, two strokes are more fun I have two two strokes one of these, the h1 triple, and a yamaha ct1 175
And more, a 2 stroke with direct fuel injection is more powerful and less gaz emmiting than a 4 stroke. It is only political... People could see the smoke.
2 stroke are difficult to turbo, takes a lot of work. And then you lose the great noise.....;-) And I have enough HP for our short track anyway. The bike is still faster than I am........
I have a bunch of triples, including 750's. And I already built a "sudo" replica. and I really like the spoke look, a period thing I guess. And if you look at the little write up here, it was just under 70rwhp.
2 strokes aren't as lazy as 4 strokes on high rounds

sanfranciscobay 2 years ago
no, I have different pipes now with cans, so I can't......
johnnydanger57 2 years ago
What are pipes with cans?
Is that stock pipes?
sanfranciscobay 2 years ago
just canister silencers, like 2 stroke dirt bikes. and no, not stock pipes.

is it possible to make a 2 stroke engine to work with turbo?? can anyone know???
bonebreaker27 2 years ago
Yes it's been doe a lot. But there are special things to do so the crank seals don't just blow out.
johnnydanger57 2 years ago
no turbo because 2stroke need almost no exhaust resistance to fully hit power band ....but a pulley driven supercharger would work and probably really good

(not possable to turbo a 2 stroke cause ofback pulse in exhaust)
autouniondkw102 3 years ago
his name is actually Walter Kaaden, not Karden. youre right about everything else though.

not bad for a motor with only 3 moving parts! I agree, bring back the 2 strokes! If evinrude can do it, they ALL should.

Wow! That sounds fantastic! I love 2-strokes.

I agree 100 percent. Too much history, usefulness, fun and power to be made 2 stroke wise.
Don't give up on 'em!

SAVE THE TWO STROKE ENGINE!
all the rest of the oil companies that produce 2 STROKE oil have to be eviromentaly friendly.
IT'S SIMPLY GREAT!!
stroke engines should be allowed on the road.
From a old timer MOTOCROSS RACER..
KEEP THE 2 STROKE ENGINE ALIVE!!!

doesnt it rip chains when you hit the powerband?

I think you caught the end of the comments. The GP 500's were putting ut over 200 rwhp, mine is a 33 year old modded street motor, only 70 rwhp, but still a blast!
johnnydanger57 3 years ago
Sound nice!
alexcandy1411 3 years ago
lovely sound!!!
massikka5678 3 years ago
70rwhp out of a half liter engine. that's at least 140 shp / liter. N/A 4strokes can barely keep up even when totally tricked out. If I'm worng, oh well, but I thought the record for 4-strokes was like 120hp/L for non forced induction (and no NOS!) I could just imagine what a 1 liter turbo 2-stroke could do :) (not by forcing the pressure through the crankcase either)
JPRubber2 3 years ago
Just for comparison, at the end of the 500 2 stroke Gp racing, the factory racers were "tame" enough to ride on the street at low throttle openings, but peak rear wheel horsepower was around 210-220. One of the reasons The first Moto GP 4 strokes were 990cc's was because they wanted to make sure they could beat the 500's that were still legal for a few years.
johnnydanger57 3 years ago
Awesome!
JPRubber2 3 years ago
Go for it! We need guys out there thinking out of the box. Just read up on everything 2 stroke.

Damn, pull the clutch in after you let off the gas! These bikes do not tolerate screaming revs with the throttle closed. Suprized it didnt "squeak"! Remember lube is proportional to throttle position on these old triples! Bike sounded good though.
smokinjoeh2750 3 years ago
That's a big NO-NO on Kaw triples, the clutch rods will friction weld together and sometimes weld to the input shaft. Unless you have a roller pusher conversion, which I don't. And it's a brake dyno anyway, which you really have to have with triples.

Ive always been told not to chop off on the throttle on my ktm 200sx, when the carb is closed quickly at high rpm the engine draws less fuel mixture through thus getting less oil when it needs it most.
Very nice bike btw =)

That is very true...... for pre-mix 2 strokes. I always run the oil pump on my racers. And thanks!

don't know what year etc. but there were 4 3cyl 2 stroke bikes at my loval dragstrip running in the 9's in the quarter mile. mean as hell and sound wicked too.
ztwntyn8 4 years ago
They are still racing them. They are trying to break into the 7's this year. They are very close. The last dyno run I saw was 223 hp at the countershaft. These are 750's of course..... ;-)

just a question, does this bike have powerband like 2 stroke dirtbikes???
skateordie8392 4 years ago
Pretty much. Most all performace 2 strokes have simular powerbands, a definate hit when coming on the pipe.
johnnydanger57 4 years ago
yes they do have a power band and that is the reason they stopped makin the bike .. too many people flipping on the highway that and the inner cylinder would over heat but god do I want another
mooof1970 4 years ago
Is that also the reason they stoped making 2 stroke dirtbikes? ... to many people getting hurt?
skateordie8392 4 years ago
did they really stop making 2 stroke bikes ??? even dirt ones.. I didnt know that.. But 4 strokes are more reliable and the power is near compreable may be the reason no oil mixing and all that
mooof1970 4 years ago
they have banned the import of 2 strokes in the US for emmissions or so they say but give me a break ... bikes like lawnmowers dont even have to go thru emmissions test.. it breaks down in my opinion, 2 strokes have 3 moving parts as oppossed to a 4 stroke which has i think like 36 parts to be replaced.. that and whiney Mom types that didnt like the sound if a 2 stroke zipping up n down the street
mooof1970 4 years ago
no they stopped making 2s because of the environment, but who gives a shit, two strokes are more fun I have two two strokes one of these, the h1 triple, and a yamaha ct1 175
atomicsaladbowl 4 years ago
same, i like 2 stroke dirtbikes over 4 strokes... i have a yz125
skateordie8392 4 years ago
And more, a 2 stroke with direct fuel injection is more powerful and less gaz emmiting than a 4 stroke. It is only political... People could see the smoke.

golem72002 5 years ago
2 stroke are difficult to turbo, takes a lot of work. And then you lose the great noise.....;-) And I have enough HP for our short track anyway. The bike is still faster than I am........
johnnydanger57 5 years ago
how fast can it go ?
golem72002 5 years ago
I have no idea. It is geared very low for our short roadracing track.

THE FUCKING BEST 2STROKE SCREEMER ON UTUBE!
mfuji01 5 years ago
Sickness. I love old two strokes.
Could have been putting 70hp down, after that rating, wheel spokes start bending and bad things happen while riding it...
If it is more than 70hp, I highly reccomend getting some alloys...
SpeedingStudent 5 years ago
they are a blast! And I do have alloys..... ;-)
johnnydanger57 5 years ago
Smart guy. It would be even better if you got a 750 triple, and built yourself an evil little lime green KR750 cafe racer special.
That would be sickness...reliving the heyday of kawasaki in the 70s, when they ruled the world of racing.
You would need the golden marichisni (?) magnesium alloys to match the lime paint.
just an idea...but an expensive one.
At any rate, what is your triple puting down to the ground (RWHP)???
Inquiring minds want to know!!!
SpeedingStudent 5 years ago
I have a bunch of triples, including 750's. And I already built a "sudo" replica. and I really like the spoke look, a period thing I guess. And if you look at the little write up here, it was just under 70rwhp.
