@rajvosa71000 yes they would, but they would probably also likely recognize it as human, and wouldn't be any more of an attractant than normal body odor.
Just tie both bags to one end, hoist them up to the level you want and tie the other end of the rope to a tree or branch a ways away. Not the same tree. Your average bear like Yogi will never figure it out. Also hang your bags like 40 yards away from your night camp. Sorry no midnight snacks allowed. lol You can also hang twine horizontal wrapped around trees with bear bells around your camp perimeter like 2-3 ft off the ground as a night warning something is close to camp. FYI
That throwing pouch is not very 'survival style'... Try a monkey fist knot around a marble or steel ball found in rolling computer mice. That method is much more durable then a stitched pouch, and if damaged can be replaced by tying a other knot with the same cordage.
I think that if you tied the first end to the third end and looped it around to the second end tied off to the 12 foot end multiplied then divided the end with the roped end of the counter end with sexy shorts end around the limb smaller than the arm but higher than 22 feet and tied a knot, you'll be ok. Fear not, as the bear will die of old age long before you finish this hang method. His great grand children could be a problem though.
Who else would find extreme pleasure viewing Selica mudd wrestling ThePatriotNurse? I'll donate a whole months wages to either ladies favorite charity.
Hey, before you even start, you have to pick the proper tree and branch: 1st is to pick the proper branch. Bears have tech. They approach a bear bagged tree in a certain way. First, they look for a tie-down rope. Second, they climb the tree and try to bounce the branch until the bag walks off the end. Third, they try to snap off the branch. If the tree will not survive this standard bear approach (in the sierras), then hanging your food is an exercise in futility.
@gjonesy9 fight ya for her lol knuckle up punk:) but great video Selica...something about legs;) but all of a sudden I have a strange desire to buy bear bags...when there's no bears in my country:)
Cool Method! I always end up with less rope than I planned by the time I'm done with the campsite, I need to remember to bring a designated bear bagging cord.
I met this really smart fellow on the AT during my thru-hike. He was using his boot as a weight to throw his rope over a branch. I asked him if he really wanted to get that stuck up there.
@peaksurvival . I love winter i wont trade it for mosquito bites . Eaven if that means shoveling my driveway all the frek& time like a mad man . Whats with the snowless imvoronnement ? do you migrate with the season?
Selica; what do you think about bear canisters? I find it almost impossible to hang a bear bag. What I do in Illinois since we have no black bears, I have created my own anti-raccoon canister from two clean paint cans bolted together. This works well for me now but in the future when my girls are older I will be taking them canoeing in areas with bears.
Be careful throwing a nalgean over I ran into a situation where I had the Nalgean attached to a rope with a carabineer and the carabineer clipped right on the bear wire I was throwing it over. Could have lost Rope Carabineer and Nalgean if it wasn't for a camp staff that shimmied up the rope to retrieve.
Selica, what happened to part III of the survival knife vids? IIRC, you have to get to the Martindale #2. And speaking of survival -and since you are in Miami- how about a beach survival vid with you in a bikini? :-)
I posted the question to this already but I have an idea you may wish to incorporate. It will only require a carabiner. Tie a carabiner on the end of the slack rope and wedge it into the side of the counterbalance bag. If no straps are present on the bag, tape it on there. Now, all you would have to do is hook the stick into the carabiner and pull (if taped, it may require some force). Just an idea.
Hypothetical question? If someones x wife got were to get stuck in a bear bag with a pizza, some twinkies and some dollar value meal burgers and the bear bag weighed say 500lbs...How would one go about hoisting this up a tree without the aide of pulleys and/or come-alongs? I think one could use the momentum of a car to get this bag at least 3 feet off the ground as long as the branch and bumper were strong enough?
@alexgoyettemobile HAHAHA! I just came in from shoveling my driveway too...and breaking about 2 inches of ice that was covered by the snow. I wish it was summer
Thanks Peak for the great demo. I do have to say that you could make a demo of building an outhouse look awesome. Good looks and survival skills what else could you want. Really what else could you want.
@EconoChallenge I recently purchased an 'Outsak UL' for the critters (squirrels, mice, racoons and birds). I figure if I hang that as a bear bag, my food should be pretty safe from most anything.
@Woodenarrows Just checked them out. Fairly pricey piece of gear. My food bag has been attacked by three of the critters you have mentioned over the years. It never ended a trip early but I did have to share food for the last few days on one trip. Not sure if that is often enough to justify the price.
@EconoChallenge Pricing sometimes is worry free peace of mind. If you are not in bear country, you don't have to hang it. Just tether to something so it doesn't get carried off. It's cheaper and lighter than a Ursack (at 4 oz) and cheaper than a tent. Had a tent chewed up years ago trying to keep food away from squirells :-)
the question I'm having throughout this whole video is how to get the bags down.. I've been always told to just tie your bags to one side and tie the other side a local tree trunk or rock
@gasdorf one time while in russia many years back, we came upon a frozen dead guy that had gotten drunk while ice fishing and lay where he passed out. Due to dropping temps, people are often found this way, even in the city parks. dont know when to stop drinking. well later that night while drinking ourselves a bet be layed upon me and another. to try human. we tried a fillet off the back, just below the neck, figured whod know, not like chicken at all. like stringy beef. true story, got pics!
@PHARRAOH Dude, are you doing schtick? You seriously carved up a dead drunk in the woods and put a fillet of hairy back over the campfire and ate that shit? Nah, gotta be schtick.
@Whisper6911 We are a group of 4 guys trying to hang food for 10 days. On day one or two with all four bags on the one rope you feel like you need a crane to get it up in the tree. This might work when we can only find one really good branch near camp.
@Whisper6911 Just off the top of my head (cause we have not tried this yet) I think we all have close to the same weight in food at the start. So two bag is easier to lift than four. Once you get the other two bags on the other side they would be counter balance and move up and down easier. What about running a line over a branch in two different trees to have the bear bag suspended between the two trees? That way there is no worry about whether or not a bear might be able to climb out on a branch.
I need a cigarette and a cuddle after that video. Whoo.....

uknow if u just tie both bags to one end, and tie off the cord to a stationary object,
u will need only the actual 12 feet u are going to use, instead of the 24 suggested in the video.
why make things more complicated then they need to be?
Whisper6911 1 year ago
@Whisper6911 We are a group of 4 guys trying to hang food for 10 days. On day one or two with all four bags on the one rope you feel like you need a crane to get it up in the tree. This might work when we can only find one really good branch near camp.
EconoChallenge 1 year ago
@EconoChallenge well think about this: ure gonna have to hoist one bag all the way to the top
so u can get enuff rope to attach the other and get the 2 of them to hang at half that hight.
so how does that preserve energy?
Whisper6911 11 months ago
@Whisper6911 Just off the top of my head (cause we have not tried this yet) I think we all have close to the same weight in food at the start. So two bag is easier to lift than four. Once you get the other two bags on the other side they would be counter balance and move up and down easier. However ... as you correctly point out ... you are going to pull two bags twice as far using this method. I say its even either way.
