  • Songwriters master class

  • Great song off a very under-rated album. Thanks for uploading.

  • superbe!

  • I've never walked down Hollywood Boulevard nor seen battefield Vietnam but I did grow up with these guys' music and who could deny their legacy to American heros? The Who at Concert for NYC, Elton's Candle in the Wind, .... the list goes on & on. @mikeUNCI is right "in 400 years when..." They made a difference. Did we?

  • ich lieb das

  • key of D suits Ray well

  • Such a beautiful and melancholy song. I was born in Hollywood, and walked that street many, many times. Ray nailed it!

  • How great is it that he would even come up with the idea to write such a song ?

How good. Nothing like it before or since.

  • @TheRonpower You could say that about most of his soungs- Ray is the best songwriter EVER :)

  • When was this?

  • Wow. I am blown away!!!! Love it!

  • I can hardly breathe. Saw them in 1982 in the Garden...My brotherin law Mario became addicted to them. (alomg with other things!) He spent so many years listening to Kinks - ONLY- (with the ocaissional influence from his brother)...Mario died in 1988...It still makes me cry,

  • @curio46 My heart goes out to you PEACE to all

  • amazing, affecting. i always loved this song. anyone know when this was recorded? ray looks lovely - shame the rest of the band are in such deep shadow.

  • The Kinks are on par with the Beatles and the Stones. Not a day goes by that I don't listen to a Kinks song.

  • @spetrus You are correct and dont forget , Pink Floyd, The Who and C S N &Y

  • Which concert is it?Probably best version I've ever heard!!!Wonderful bass playing..great emotions!!

  • Everytime I listen to this song, I can't help but start crying... I love it so much.

  • Great imagination that today's self styled sick souls so called singers cant even dream of .......

  • fuck off

  • pete townshend called ray davies the poet laureate of england

  • pete townshend called ray davies the poet laureate of great britian.

  • i love the insistent everyman inclusion along with the parallel structure of fame and failure. man ray just nailed that shit, huh?

  • This guy is a poet and great creator

  • True artists !!

  • This is a great underated song......I think it would be so fuckin awesome if there was a part 2 of this song for those Hollywood stars who passed away since...maybe a great band now can write this part 2..........

  • great song

  • dieser song ist so einmalig wie die kinks selber.

    für mich ein welthit.

  • The unappreciated genious of The Kinks. Bless you Ray and BLESS YOU Dave!

  • I think he went a little heavy on the eye make-up.

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. I absolutely LOVE Ray Davies!

  • Excellent!

  • he has got GREAT HAIR!!! like mine...

  • superb

  • I think this is the best Ray has ever looked, the shaggy hair is awesome.

  • Beautiful~

  • Agree. Actually probably better than McCartney. Song after brilliant song.

  • @rhagfirheulog No way better, but one of the greatest!!

  • @jimstoffel2 Just trying to be controversial!!

  • wow

  • one of my fav songs of all time! amazing

  • Such great hair.

  • I saw the kinks about 15 years ago and the highlight of the show was when Ray did a 1/2 hour solo act.

  • Classic!!!!!!

  • This by far my favorite Kinks song it's so beautifully written Ray should get more Recognition on Radio & his fellow muscians

  • Amazing

  • The one time I got to see them live, this was the show-stopper. Great song!

  • Absolutely under-rated and ahead of their time.

  • what a cool band, right up to mtv with come dancing. i loved them from the time i heard you really got me now, centuries ago. i think they were not as sentimental as the beatles, nor flat out outrageous as the stones. thanks for posting this.

  • they are the bests!

  • an all time great writer,so full of wisdom and wit.... ...i walked hollywood boulivard and all i could think of was celluloid heroes.....never really feel any pain...never really die

  • I just love the Kinks & this song! Genius!

  • Ray gets more qualitative recognition, rather than quantitive...

  • "A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame For The Kinks". Thank you BobCT11 - Let's all join and get them the recognition they deserve!!

  • For Celluloid Heroes alone The Kinks deserve a Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, but of course there's so much more. Please join our Facebook group and help make it happen. We have videos, photos, discussions and lots more to come. On Facebook go to "A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame For The Kinks".

  • Fantastico! ;)

  • LOL - when I was in high school, I used to walk down Hollywood Blvd singing this song!

  • Rock'n'roll Fantasy and Celluloid Heroes are my favorite Kinks'work in 70's.

    ....everybody's a dreamer

  • @YoungBelaLugosi rock and roll fantasy is by BAD COMPANY

  • Comment removed

  • you're correct !

''A Rock & Roll Fantasy'' was writen by Ray Davis.i lost write'' A ''.

  • You have your Rock and Roll Fantasy songs mixed up.

  • The Kinks do their own song titled, Rock "N" Roll Fantasy

  • @kebbyb

  • I always love his lyrics and logical way of thinking!

    :D

  • Oh Celluloid heroes never feel any pain.

  • Is that because they're all dead now.

  • Super song and group.

I wonder if they got a star on Hollywood Blvd?

    They deserve it!!!!!!!!!

  • @mikeUNC1

they still haven't gotten one yet, you would think this song alone would justify it, let alone their legendary career

  • @mikeUNC1 And, in 400 years when all the bullshit has turned to dust, then Lennon, McCartney, etc including Ray Davies will be studied and recognized as true creative geniuses who were the voice of our culture and times. And, the "60s" won't be the sixties- for time will be viewed as centuries and not just 1967.

  • 0:07 wtf is that?

  • This man is a treasure; a great writer and a wonderful performer. I have seen him several times.

  • @MsMarart - I wish I could say that I've seen him. I've been a fan for about forty years. You're right, Ray is one of the best song writers ever.

  • does anyone know what year this was? 80s?

  • 1972. A quick search of Wikipedia will answer a lot of music questions.

  • @greener14519

1972 is the original studio version. This is not 1972 if anyone could help identify the year would be welcome

  • lookin up ladies dresses. Ray you devil!! ha ha

  • I noticed at the very end that Ray brushed away a tear from his eye. He wasn't the only one.

  • "Raises the hair on the nape of your neck now does it not?"

    Harper and Owens

  • A Masterpiece

  • Pure brilliance.

  • will someone please finally get them their goddamn star, if not just for this one fucking song!

  • Absolutely! Brilliant band, Ray a poet!

  • Saw Ray for the first time ever last night at Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ. Been fortunate to see many legends, but this was the best concert I've ever seen! What a talent!!! What humanity! thank you, Ray.

  • dude if u ever hear that ray davies is playin again plz can u let me kno

i aint seen him live yet :(

  • What a song. I wanted to marry Ray Davies when I was a young girl. Wait...... I stilll do. !! :)

  • Great Ray. The Best.

  • Yes,Ray Davies the best.I love this man with all my heart,my favorite rock star ever. Please Ray,get back The Kinks and come to play here.

  • He's a friggen' genius

  • They already have a star on the Hollywood Boulevard :D....

  • This one's a killer!

    Whoa, some good shit, dudes!

Somewhat period related but history lesson might not hurt anyone..

Finnish cover by Juice Leskinen is a killer one! It captures the feeling f the original one and transfers it to finnish atmosphere! A jewel!

  • I agree i agree i agreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.x

  • Get them their star on Hollywood Blvd., they deserve it more than any other musicians based on this song alone, let alone their 30 years of classics!!!

  • Maravillosa ! Qué grande, Ray !

  • As a 2nd generation Kinks fan, my first album of theirs was the live one they'd published in 1980. It was on that album that I'd first heard this song and it all seemed so touching. Both the subject, tender lyrics and melody seemed to strike a nerve and to this day I don't exactly know why. Thanks for teh upload.

  • Heard this song 1976-78 and here it is again. DJ at the time said it was a tear-jerker. Yep.

  • pne of the best and most meaning full song ever ritten

  • this song is legit.

  • love this song but it missed out my favourite verse, if you covered him in garbage george sanders would still have style and if you stamped on mickey rooney hed still turn round and smile but please dont tread on dearest marilyn cause shes not very tough shouldve been made of iron or steel but she was only made of flesh and blood ray davies is a godlike songwriter

  • Ray has been my hero since I was a teen; I've always thought this song was an absolute masterpiece.

  • the best song written about Hollywood

  • KINKS ARE LEGENDARY ENOUGH SAID

  • One of the great songwriters. Doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He should be right up there with Lennon/McCartney & Jagger/Richards when you look at the UK's best.

  • No doubt about it. As much recognition as the Kinks and Ray Davies do get, Ray's talent as a songwriter is SO under-rated. The more I listen, the more I love. Incredibly great!

  • .One thing for sure, Ray gets the acclaim from other great songwriters. I've heard Costello praise him as well as Gifford & Tilbrook.

I grew up with the Kinks and must say on vinyl or on stage...simply the best.

Great filmaking Darren...been a fan of yours for sometime! Have a good one!

  • @radiosandclocks I'm not sure Ray Davies doesn't get that recognition as a great songwriter. They certainly don't get as much airplay. And that's too bad, but as far as being recognized, I think he does. The R&R HOF (for what it's worth), has tagged him as the most erudite songwriter.

  • @zerominusminus true, he does get it from colleagues and serious listeners. And true they don't get the airplay they should. They did in the 60's &70's here in LA, but the classic rock stations now only play their hits...which is a shame. R&R HOF for what it's worth? No shit!

  • @radiosandclocks i even think he's better than jagger... in terms of lyrcs (completely different styles in singing)

  • @radiosandclocks Pete Towhnsend said he's the greatest songwriter ever..Thats regognition to me coming from another amazing artist

  • @radiosandclocks

Surely he (they) gets the recognition so greatly deserved . Not by same numbers, but by intensity! Everything's not a competition.

  • @radiosandclocks mis posted my reply please see posting under mikeUNC1

  • YouTube Heroes never die

  • WOW

  • AWESOME song!! My husband turned me on to the Kinks back in 1978 and still love them til this day!! Thanks for posting this video!!

  • Jaw-droppingly beautiful.

  • Tearflowingly intense, I would add...I never succeed to keep my eyes dry after the line about Greta Garbo....

  • Good song.

  • what makes this song even more special was a "Brit" came up with it...Awesome band live!

  • he omited a verse

  • I think Ray has had his share of struggling and suffrin', also. The world breaks everyone!

  • what year is this

  • Judging by the clothes I'm guessing very late seventies/very early eighties....

  • song came out in 1972

  • great song!!! I have to perform it, it'll be a awesome!!!!

  • Where did the skip come from?

  • A masterpiece! A rock classic that speaks for millions. What eles is there to say?

  • Kyl Juicen Leskisen versio on parempi

  • fuckin' Genius..

  • Could not agree more.Brilliant.

  • The greatest song that Ray Davies ever wrote. Sad that this wasn't a hit on it's original release in 1972. Bernie Taupin and Elton John must have listened to this song when writing Candle in the Wind the following year.

  • Truely one of the best they did...To bad Dave does't step out more with his guitar on the breaks.

  • I just have to see this video every couple of weeks.. As cuaremm says BEVER remove it from youtube

  • This is SUCH-A MASTERPIECE. How can anyone come up with such beautiful thoughts?

  • Such a sad song...

  • One of their best tunes

  • one would think they had their star on that boulevard by now, just on the merits of this song let alone about 400 more

  • never remove this video that is serious!!

  • Every time I even think of this song, I feel like I`ve been rapped in celluloid! What an awesome view.

    Ride on, Ray!

    Joe

  • Damn, That was Great!

  • My Heroine.... Bette Davis .... "Stand close by Bette Davis for hers was such a lonely life"

  • I must say this song is one of my favorite from the Kinks and Ray Davies got such a special voice !

  • How great to see this gorgeous clip back on the Tube. Wonde4rful song, Ray at his most dreamy

  • I'm in love with Ray!!!

  • Me too....

  • "sigh" Me too

  • My favorite song of all times! Ray Davies is a genius!!!

  • The best band specially because of their lyrics which are much more than "she loves you yeah yeah yeah", hahahaha
