I don't like the approach because this seems useful only for copy pasting. Like you mentioned, there are unworked quirks. Moreover, when I need to have info from multiple tabs at once, I pop the tabs out of that window and view them at once, then pop them back in once I'm done. I think what you'd like is the ability to group tabs, and from a grouped tab, you'd get the option to make each of them its own window.
I would like to have this feature available but not by default. Take the current tabs functionality, and add a function for this. Like if you hold ctrl/command and click another tab, that/those other selected tabs will then be added to the main view in a split pane like the one you have demonstrated. Highlighting and dragging text across these panes/tabs into a textarea will then effectively copy+paste the selected text.
or you can use ctrl+tab.

Hmm, might work. You'd really need a keyboardshortcut to activate. It would also be nice to have the ability to use it with keyboard only.
